Fire on the Pavement

The wall of violet fire raced straight toward us, eating the asphalt and turning the ground into glowing dust.

I did not have time to think. I threw my hands out in front of me and pushed all my power into the pavement. A massive sheet of thick, jagged ice shot up from the street, rising like a wall to block the path of the flames.

The fire slammed into the ice with a deafening crash. Steam exploded into the air, blinding us with thick white clouds. The heat was so intense that the front of my suit jacket felt hot against my chest, and the ice wall began to crack down the middle, splintering into a thousand sharp pieces under the pressure.

Move! Evelyn shouted, grabbing the back of my suit jacket and yanking me hard to the side.

We rolled across the pavement just as the ice wall shattered completely. The wave of fire swept past the space where we had been standing, scorching the brick walls of the buildings beside us.

I scrambled to my feet, coughing as the thick smoke filled my lungs. I looked back into the street, but the road was empty. The violet light was gone, and Elena had vanished into thin air, leaving nothing behind except a deep, smoking trench in the middle of the road.

Evelyn stood up beside me, brushing soot off her gray trench coat. Her blue eyes were sharp and angry as she stared at the empty street.

She is gone, Evelyn said, her voice hard. And that was just a test. Your sister is not sick anymore, Arthur. She is connected to the core of the council's magic grid.

My hands shook at my sides. The anger I felt was not hot anymore. It was cold and sharp. For years, I had believed that my only purpose in life was to protect my little sister, to pay for the medical bills, and to keep her safe from the world. Now I knew the truth. I was never her brother in the way that mattered. I was just a living shield, made in a lab to keep a monster asleep until the council was ready to break the city.

My uncle lied to me about everything, I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Every elite family in this city lies, Evelyn replied, turning to look at me with a critical gaze. The council rules New York from the shadows. They control the money, the police, and the magical gates. Your uncle Marcus thought he could use you as a pawn and throw you away when you found out too much.

He tried to kill me, I said, looking down at my hands where dark shadows coiled around my fingers. And now he thinks he can hide behind his guards.

Evelyn watched me closely, a small, calculating smile touching the corner of her mouth. She was a cop who hated rule-breakers, but right now, she looked at me like a partner who had just figured out how the game was played.

If you want revenge on your uncle, you cannot do it alone, Evelyn said, crossing her arms. The council has hundred of guards patrolling this lockdown zone. My safe house is three blocks away. We go there, get some gear, and figure out how to crack their main database.

Why are you helping me? I asked, narrowing my eyes. You are federal magic police. You should be trying to arrest me for using illegal powers.

My department was shut down by the council yesterday morning, Evelyn said, her tone turning ice cold. They want every independent officer out of the way so they can run this city into the ground. Your uncle and his council friends are my enemies too. We use each other, Arthur. That is how we survive tonight.

I nodded slowly. It was a partnership built on survival and revenge, but it was the only option I had.

Lead the way, I said.

We moved quickly through the dark, quiet streets, staying close to the shadows of the tall buildings. The giant purple dome overhead pulsed with a steady, eerie light, casting long shadows across the empty sidewalks. There were no cars, no people, and no ordinary cops in sight. The entire city of Manhattan had been turned into a closed cage, and we were trapped inside with the hunters.

After ten minutes of fast walking, Evelyn stopped in front of an old brick apartment building that looked abandoned from the outside. She pulled a heavy iron key from her pocket, unlocked a side door, and pulled me inside before locking it tightly behind us.

The inside of the safe house was small and cramped. A desk covered in computer monitors sat against one wall, and maps of New York City were pinned to a corkboard, marked with red X's and glowing magical coordinates.

Evelyn walked straight to the computer desk and hit the power button. The screens flickered to life, casting a bright blue glow over her face.

Let us see what your uncle's company has been hiding, Evelyn muttered, her fingers flying across the keyboard.

I stood behind her, watching the lines of code and security files scroll down the monitor. Names of high-ranking council members flashed past, along with financial records and secret project blueprints.

Here, Evelyn said, stopping on a file marked with a red seal. Project Decoy.

I leaned closer, my breath catching in my throat as I read the title. My own name was listed right at the top of the document, along with my birth date, my magical signature, and detailed notes written by my uncle Marcus.

Subject Vance is stable, the screen read. Shadow and ice affinity developed successfully. Serves as an effective emotional anchor and physical barrier for the primary core vessel, Elena.

My hands curled into tight fists. Every memory I had of my childhood, every time Marcus told me I had to be strong for my sister, was right there on the screen, proven to be a cold, calculated lie. I was not a nephew. I was a tool.

He planned this from the very beginning," I whispered, the cold anger inside me growing too big to control.

We can use this data to break their main network," Evelyn said, looking up at me with steady eyes. "If we hit the central tower where your uncle is hiding right now, we can crash the dome, and before Evelyn could finish her sentence, the computer screen went completely black.

The lights in the safe house flickered and died. A heavy, suffocating silence filled the room, followed by the sound of metal scraping against metal outside the front door.

Evelyn jumped to her feet, drawing her electric pistol in a single fluid motion. I stepped back, letting my shadow and ice powers flare up around my fingers, turning the air in the small room freezing cold. They found us, Evelyn whispered, keeping her eyes fixed on the locked front door.

The heavy iron door did not just open. It exploded inward in a shower of splintered wood and flying iron bolts. Through the cloud of dust, a tall man stepped into the room. He wore a crisp gray suit, his silver hair was neatly combed, and a cold, knowing smile sat on his face. In his hand, he held a heavy energy rifle aimed straight at my chest.

Did you really think you could hide from the family business, Arthur? Uncle Marcus asked, his voice dripping with mock disappointment.
