A hundred glowing red eyes stared at us from the dark tunnel, and the low, wet growl grew loud enough to rattle the stones in the floor.

Do not look back, Evelyn said. Her voice did not shake. She raised her right hand, letting bright yellow electricity spark across her skin to cast a sharp glare over the dark train tracks. We fight our way through the tunnel, or we die right here.

I am not running, I said, stepping past her.

I raised both hands. Dark shadow energy swirled around my fingers, mixing with a thick layer of freezing frost. The air in the underground passage dropped instantly, turning our breath into white clouds.

Before the shadow beasts could leap from the ceiling, I slammed my palms down onto the concrete tracks. A sharp wall of jagged ice shot forward, blocking the narrow tunnel from wall to wall. The creatures slammed into the frozen barrier with heavy thuds, clawing at the ice and screeching in rage.

That will not hold them for long, Evelyn said, already running toward the open chamber where the red runes pulsed on the stone platform.

We burst out of the tunnel and into the massive underground room. The air here was hot and thick, filled with the hum of the magic grid drawing power from the red dome above. In the center of the chamber, Elena stood tall on the stone platform, her hands raised toward the ceiling while the council guards knelt around her in total silence.

She turned her head slowly, her violet eyes locking onto mine.

You should have stayed in the office, Arthur, Elena spoke. Her voice echoed off the stone walls, carrying that strange, deep double tone that sounded nothing like my little sister. The core is almost open. The shield cannot be stopped now.

Stop this, Elena, I shouted, taking a step toward the platform. "You are not a weapon. You are my sister.

Elena let out a cold, sharp laugh that cut through the noise of the machinery. Sister? That was just a story your uncle fed you to keep you useful. I am the anchor. You were just the shield. And shields are meant to be broken.

The words hit me harder than any physical blow. Every memory of sitting by her hospital bed, every time I took on extra work to pay for her care, every promise we made, all of it was a lie manufactured by the council. The anger inside me flared, cold and sharp, burning away whatever fear I had left.

If you want to break me, I said, my voice dropping an octave as the shadows around my hands grew wild, you have to get through me first.

Evelyn stepped up beside me, her electric pistol drawn and ready in her hand. She did not look at me with pity. She looked at the platform like a general preparing for a final battle.

She is channeling the grid power, Evelyn said quietly, keeping her eyes fixed on the guards surrounding the base of the platform. If we take out the council enforcers first, we can cut off her connection to the core.

Do it, I replied.

The council guards rose to their feet as one, drawing heavy energy swords that glowed with a harsh red light. They did not shout or wait for orders. They charged straight toward us across the stone floor.

Evelyn moved first. She fired a blinding bolt of lightning from her hand, striking the lead guard square in the chest. The man dropped instantly, smoking and unmoving. As three more guards closed in around her, she swung her heavy electric pistol, blocking a strike and spinning to kick another enforcer into the stone wall.

I did not wait for the rest. I thrust my hands forward, sending a wave of black shadows across the floor. The shadows wrapped around the ankles of the incoming guards, tripping them hard against the stone. Before they could get back up, I snapped my fingers, and thick spikes of ice shot up from the ground, pinning them in place.

We fought our way through the enforcers, moving together like a well-oiled machine. Every time a guard tried to flank us, Evelyn's lightning dropped them, and every time someone tried to rush from the shadows, my ice stopped them cold.

In less than a minute, all twelve council guards lay defeated on the stone floor.

We stood side by side at the base of the platform, breathing hard, our eyes fixed on Elena.

Elena did not look worried. She simply lowered her hands, letting the red energy hum around her fingers. A cruel, unfamiliar smile curved her lips.

You think a few guards were the real defense? Elena asked softly.

She slammed her right hand down onto the center of the stone platform.

The entire underground chamber shook violently, knocking us both off balance. The red runes beneath our feet flared blindingly bright, and a heavy circle of iron chains burst out from the floor around us, locking into place before we could move.

Evelyn tried to fire a bolt of lightning at the chains, but the electricity simply bounced off the metal without leaving a scratch.

Magic-sealed steel, Evelyn cursed, tugging hard against the bars that held her arms. We are trapped.

I pulled against the heavy iron, letting my shadow powers flare up to try and melt the locks. But the metal absorbed my energy, glowing red hot without breaking.

On the platform above us, Elena raised her hands toward the ceiling once more. The massive red beam connecting her to the core grew thicker, and the low heartbeat sound inside the room turned into a deafening roar.

Look up, brother, Elena whispered.

I raised my eyes toward the high stone ceiling of the chamber.

The solid rock above us was cracking open. Thick, wet black tentacles covered in glowing red eyes pushed through the stone, writhing and twisting as they reached down into the room.

And from the center of the opening, a massive, faceless shadow creature dropped down onto the floor, letting out a roar that shook the very foundation of New York City.
