Chapter Four

Selena's body tensed at his voice. Fear glimmered within her eyes for a second before masking it.

Jaw dropping, Darcy watched as Leo approached them with the grace of a model. His tuxedo, enough to make her thoughts wild.

Did Leo hear what she said? Selena deliberated.

Selena's mouth opened to utter her statement.

“Leo…” Darcy called seductively, stopping Selena, who smirked from her spot not oblivious of Darcy’s game.

Bitch! Trying to get attention from my trash? Selena snorted slowly, crossing her arms on her bosom.

Leo glanced between the two ladies whom he stumbled upon in the late night. He had no clue about what they were discussing.

Hell, he didn't even give a damn!

“Hello Darcy,” Leo returned the greeting politely, his eyes slowly drawn to Selena.

“I didn't know I would see you here.”

“Oh,” Darcy glanced sweetly at Selena who glared back at her.

“I was taking a stroll, you know,” she shrugged.

“Trying to escape for a minute or so to catch my breath before I get suffocated.”

“You know how I detest partying,” she rolled her eyes dramatically.

“but I can't help it because it's Granny Eliza’s birthday party.”

Not waiting for Leo’s response, Darcy continued. “I will see you later.”

“Not an issue,” Leo responded meekly.

“Privately.” Darcy called, taking the exit but not before casting Leo a wink.

Leo gazed at Selena, quietly watching with disdain.

“I am glad that you didn't disappoint me. What took your sorry ass so long to arrive here?” Selena demanded in a condescending tone.

Leo curled his fist, taking a deep breath before responding.

“Never mind, I don't give a damn about what you did with your pathetic time!” Selena snapped, not waiting for a response.

“Granny needs your attention. You need to learn how to take responsibility for your dirty gutter behaviour, I can't be cleaning up your mess and covering up your godforsaken ass as if you are a toddler!”

“Selena, watch your tongue!” Leo warned.

“Or what?” Selena challenged.

“You can't do nothing to me, Leo. You are just my trash can, and I can choose to dispose of you any time I like. Do you understand?”

Fury raced hot like fire from Leo’s ear. His lower lip bit down his next statement.

“Don't forget that I feed you, cloth you, and you still live under my roof!”

Live under her roof? What sort of distorted brain pattern was that?

“You do not feed me!” Leo snarled.

“And for the record, I don't live under your roof! Give me the damn divorce paper and you won't ever see me in your life again!”

“Oh my,” Selena mocked, laughing without humour. Her eyes wandered away from him for a second then gazed back at him.

“You have really grown some wings overnight, I am so scared!” She feigned incredulously.

“Am I supposed to be shaken by your damn guts?” Her jaw tightened, revealing her annoyance.

“What happened to the boy who was always begging me with his knees down and who ran to do all my biddings like a slave? For someone who is nothing, you sure have some nerves!”

Leo winced at each of her words delivered at him. It felt like a blow to his face and ego.

“Have you forgotten that with a phone call, you stand a chance of losing your dirty peasant job as a waiter?”

Selena paced around him like a prey, watching intensively to make her words sink into his cranium.

“Have you forgotten that your credit card is owned by Gregory's family, and with just one snap of my hand, it will be frozen.” She stopped in front of him, with her gaze fixed at Leo.

“You know what that means? You will be back in the street where you belong!”

“Enough! You think I belong in the street?”

“Wow! You sure know how to command authority, but boy, it doesn't suit you!” Selena brushed an invisible dust off Leo’s tuxedo.

“Stop trying to fit in, you don't belong here.”

“What has come over you?” Leo inquired softly despite his fury.

His eyes scrutinized around to ensure no one was eavesdropping on this embarrassing encounter with his wife.

Satisfied, Leo relaxed.

His actions didn't go unnoticed by Selena who smirked.

“The question should be tossed at yourself, ingrate! However, the house which you are currently staying in belongs to Gregory's family and under my name, which literally means you are still living under my roof!”

What?

The statement tossed away the shade of nonchalant Leo had left.

In a rush to get a new accommodation, he had moved to a new accommodation recommended for him by one of his work colleagues.

Seeing the flabbergasted expression on Leo's face, Selena smiled victoriously.

Indeed, the bastard Leo who claimed to be smart wasn't smart like she presumed.

She had ensured Leo had no place to stay other than her house. It was easier that way. She could keep tabs on her dog, Leo.

“That's Impossible!” Leo disagreed.

“Of course, things are always impossible to orphans, bastards, poor peasants like you but never to rich, wealthy people like me.” Pride lurched stickily in Selena’s voice.

“You made it possible! You manipulated everything! Why?”

“You must be delusional!”

“I am not oblivious to your scheme!”

“Stop feeling so highly of yourself, Leo! You don't mean anything to me! You are just my husband on paper! And it's a privilege, not your right!”

The disrespect, and humiliation from Selena ate deep into Leo's soul, breaking him apart in ways he couldn't even imagine.

He loved Selena.

She was his wife! Wasn't she supposed to be protecting him against her family? Not ruining his macho pride?

“Hey! Granny Eliza needed you to clean up the house! Get your sorry ass inside now!”

Gathering up his spine, Leo returned Selena’s gaze with his fierce own.

“Tell Granny Eliza that I am not a maid! And if she can't find one, you can take up the responsibility of a maid,” Leo stopped smirking with satisfaction at the gobsmacked look on Selena's face.

“Maid suits you better!”

“Ah,” Selena fell to the ground just as Eliza walked in on them.

“Selena!”
