The heavy stone block was falling.

Maximus Cobain could clearly see the rough, gray edges of the rock. He could see the dry dirt clinging to its surface. As it descended, the heavy stone blocked out the dim, flickering light of the torches in the hallway. It cast a dark, terrible shadow over Maximus’s face.

Garek, the scarred brute, pushed the heavy weight down with all his thick, hairy muscles. His face was twisted into a cruel, ugly mask of pure violence.

Maximus could not move. He was lying flat on his back on the cold stone floor. His heart was locked in a cage of pure agony. The Widow’s Draught poison was ravaging his chest, turning his blood into liquid fire. His muscles refused to listen to his brain. He was entirely paralyzed by the sudden, massive heart cramp.

His mental Heads-Up Display, the hallucinated system created by his traumatized brain, flashed wildly in front of his eyes.

[Incoming Mass: 15 kilograms.]

[Velocity: 5 meters per second.]

[Target: Cranium.]

[Probability of Survival: 0%]

Maximus stared at the descending rock. His brilliant, mathematical mind calculated the exact moment the stone would crush his skull. He had half a second left to live. He closed his eyes, waiting for the dark end.

But the impact never came.

Instead, a sharp, sudden smack echoed in the damp cell.

Maximus opened his eyes.

The heavy stone block was hovering exactly two inches above his nose. It was completely frozen in the air.

Garek let out a loud, confused grunt. The thick veins in Garek’s neck bulged as he pushed down with all his strength, but the rock did not move a single millimeter closer to Maximus’s face.

Maximus looked past the rock. A hand had shot out from the dark shadows of the cell corner. It was a thin, frail-looking hand. The skin was like old, brown leather, stretched tightly over the bones and covered in thick, white scars. The long, bony fingers were wrapped completely around Garek's thick right wrist.

"Let go of me, old man!" Garek roared, trying to pull his arm away.

The old man stepped forward, moving out of the dark shadows and into the dim light. He was short and stooped over. He looked incredibly frail, as if a strong wind could knock him down. He wore dirty, torn rags. He had long, matted gray hair and a short, messy white beard.

But his eyes were terrifying. They were sharp, cold, and completely calm. They were the eyes of an apex predator.

"You make too much noise, Garek," the old man said softly. His voice was quiet, but it carried a strange, heavy authority.

Maximus’s mental HUD instantly locked onto the old man. The system tried to analyze him.

[New Entity Detected.]

[Estimated Mass: 60 kg.]

[Age: Approximately 65 years.]

[Threat Level: UNKNOWN. Calculating...]

The old man did not try to match Garek’s brute strength. That would be impossible. Instead, the old man used pure physics. He stepped slightly to the side, shifting his weight. He gripped Garek’s wrist and twisted it sharply outward at a perfect, mathematically flawless forty-five-degree angle.

Maximus’s eyes widened as his HUD lit up with bright blue lines, highlighting the bones in Garek’s arm.

[Observation: Joint Manipulation. Radius and Ulna bones crossing. Extreme leverage applied to the carpal joints.]

It was a simple, tiny movement, but it applied massive, unbearable pressure directly to the small bones in Garek’s wrist.

"GAAAAH!" Garek screamed in sudden, agonizing pain. His fingers flew open automatically as his body tried to escape the pain.

He dropped the heavy stone block. It crashed onto the stone floor just an inch away from Maximus’s left ear, shattering into three large pieces. Dust blew into Maximus’s eyes.

Garek stumbled backward, clutching his wrist. "Kill him!" Garek shouted to his three thugs. "Kill the old fool!"

The three young, muscular thugs drew crude, handmade shivs from their pockets—sharp pieces of broken iron. They charged at the old man together.

Maximus watched from the floor, gasping for breath through his heart cramp. He expected the old man to be torn apart. But what happened next made Maximus’s analytical mind freeze in pure shock.

The old man did not take a fighting stance. He did not raise his fists. He simply stood completely relaxed, his arms hanging loosely at his sides.

The first thug lunged forward, thrusting the rusty iron blade directly at the old man’s stomach.

The old man barely moved. He only turned his shoulders slightly to the left. The blade missed his stomach by less than an inch, tearing only the fabric of his shirt. As the thug rushed past him, carried by his own aggressive momentum, the old man gently tapped the back of the thug’s knee with the side of his foot.

The tap was incredibly light, but it was perfectly placed.

[Target Area: Popliteal Fossa. Result: Total loss of leg stability.]

The thug’s leg folded instantly. He crashed face-first into the solid stone wall with a sickening crack, knocking himself completely unconscious.

The second thug swung a wild, wide punch at the old man’s head.

The old man ducked underneath the swinging arm with perfect, fluid grace. He did not block. He did not waste energy fighting the thug’s power. He simply placed his open palm against the thug’s elbow joint and pushed lightly in the direction the arm was already moving.

He helped the thug punch the empty air. The sudden lack of resistance and the extra push threw the thug completely off balance. He spun wildly, tripping over his own feet, and slammed hard into the iron bars of the cell door. He slid to the floor, groaning in pain.

The third thug stopped dead in his tracks. He looked at his two fallen friends. He looked at the frail old man standing perfectly still in the center of the cell. The thug dropped his rusty knife. He turned around and ran to the far corner of the dark cell, covering his head with his hands.

Garek, still holding his bruised wrist, backed away slowly. His face was pale with fear. He did not say a word. He just turned and limped into the deepest shadows of the dungeon, hiding like a beaten dog.

Maximus looked at Garek. He looked at the three men standing behind him. Then he looked down at the water. His rational mind told him to give up the water. Fighting four men was bad math. But his biological knowledge told him a different truth. If he did not drink water now, his kidneys would fail faster because of the Widow's Draught poison. Without water, his muscles would cramp, and he would die in the arena tomorrow anyway. The water was survival. He could not surrender it."No," Maximus said simply. His voice was calm, steady, and completely devoid of fear.Garek blinked. The three men behind him laughed, a cruel, mocking sound."No?" Garek repeated, stepping so close that Maximus could smell the rotting meat on his breath. "You think because you got lucky with Kael, you are a fighter? I have survived the pits for three years. I will snap your thin neck and drink your water off the floor."Maximus did not move. He set his feet exactly shoulder-width apart. He slightly bent his kn

With his eyes closed, Maximus stopped thinking about his muscles and started thinking about combat. He had zero martial arts training from his past life. He did not know how to punch properly. But he had an absolute, perfect memory, and a deep understanding of physics. He remembered the giant Kael in the pit. He remembered the heavy, stomping foot. He remembered how Kael shifted his weight. Then, he remembered the Pit Master. He remembered how the Pit Master stood, how he drew his sword, and how he kept his balance perfect despite his bad leg.Maximus’s brain took those memories and broke them down into pieces. In the darkness of his mind, glowing white lines drew a diagram of a human body.He was creating a "Skill Tree.""The fighting style here is heavy," Maximus thought. "They rely on brute force. They want to crush their enemies. Let us call it the 'Imperial Bruiser Style'."He visualized the Skill Tree. At the bottom was the base, the foundation.[Node 1 unlocked: Base Stability.

The wooden bucket smelled like death.Maximus Cobain hung his head over the edge of the splintered wood. His body shook violently. He opened his mouth, and a thick, black fluid poured out of his throat. It splashed into the bottom of the bucket with a wet, heavy sound. He gasped for air, but his lungs felt like they were filled with crushed glass. His hands gripped the sides of the bucket so tightly that his knuckles turned completely white."Ah..." Maximus groaned, spitting the last bitter taste of the poison from his mouth. It was the Widow's Draught. The Pit Master had forced him to drink it less than an hour ago. Now, the toxic liquid was attacking his nervous system. It felt like tiny, burning needles were traveling through his veins, biting into his stomach, his liver, and his heart. He was inside a large, dark holding cell deep beneath the fighting pit. The air was cold and damp. Water dripped slowly from the stone ceiling, making a steady tap, tap, tap sound in the dark. The c
