The air in the sewer was thick with the scent of stagnant water, industrial runoff, and the metallic tang of Vax’s own adrenaline. Vax hauled Akira into the shadows of a moss-slicked archway, his grip tight, his heartbeat thudding against Akira’s back like a warning drum. Above them, the heavy, rhythmic stomp of the Inquisitors vibrated through the rusted pipes. They weren't just searching; they were systematically peeling back the city’s skin.

"Quiet," Vax breathed, his voice a low vibration against Akira’s temple. "If they lock onto your vitals, we’re finished."

Akira slumped against the cold stone, his breath coming in jagged, burning gasps. The power he’d drawn from the scaffolding—a jagged, sharp-edged sensation—was still trapped in his veins, churning like broken glass. It wasn't just physical strength anymore; it was a rhythmic, demanding hunger. His skin felt too tight, his nerves humming with a vibration that threatened to shatter the very stone he leaned against.

"It’s not... it’s not staying down," Akira wheezed, his fingers clawing at the fabric of his shirt. A faint, violet luminescence began to seep from his pores, casting long, frantic shadows against the tunnel walls.

Vax swore, pressing his palm firmly against Akira’s chest to keep him pinned in the dark. The heat radiating from Vax was overwhelming—a grounding, possessive anchor in the sea of volatile energy. Vax leaned in, his face inches from Akira’s, his eyes scanning the glowing veins that throbbed with a life of their own. "Listen to me, Weaver. You have to lock it away. If that light hits the ceiling, they’ll see us from the surface."

"It's too much," Akira gasped. He looked up at Vax, his eyes wide and dilated, the predatory instinct fighting for dominance over his human fear. The proximity was intoxicating. He could smell the sweat on Vax’s skin, the sharp, masculine musk that triggered a primal, carnal heat in his gut. He wanted to push Vax away, and yet, he wanted to drag him closer, to siphon the steady, rhythmic strength pulsing through the man’s heart.

Vax’s expression softened into something dangerously intense. He shifted his weight, his knee wedging between Akira’s legs, a deliberate, grounding maneuver that sent a jolt of electric friction through Akira’s nerves. "Look at me. Focus on the pain. Focus on us."

Vax pressed his lips to the sensitive cord of Akira’s neck, a sharp, possessive bite that made Akira arch his back with a strangled cry. It was agonizingly intimate. The pain grounded the internal chaos, forcing the violet light to recede. Akira felt the hunger sharpen—a, dark, twisted craving to consume everything in his path, starting with the man holding him.

Suddenly, the tunnel light flickered and died, replaced by a cold, clinical white beam that sliced through the gloom. It wasn't a searchlight; it was a projection of pure, refined energy.

"I can smell the rot on you, Weaver," a voice drifted down—smooth, melodic, and terrifyingly devoid of human warmth.

A figure stepped down from the tunnel’s opening with impossible grace. It was Kaelith. She wore armor that seemed to absorb the surrounding darkness, and her eyes held the stillness of a deep, frozen lake. She didn't look like an Inquisitor; she looked like a queen of the underworld.

"Vax," she said, not even glancing at the scavenger. "You’ve always had a penchant for playing with things that bite. It’s a pity. You were almost useful."

Vax shoved Akira behind him, his blade drawn. "Go, kid. Get to the lower vents."

"No," Akira hissed, stepping out from behind him, his hands glowing with a deep, volatile violet. He felt the hunger spike as he locked eyes with Kaelith. She was a reservoir of power—vast, contained, and intoxicating. "I’m not running anymore."

Kaelith tilted her head, a small, amused smile touching her lips. She raised a single, gloved finger. "Oh? You think because you cracked a scaffold, you’re a predator?"

The air in the tunnel suddenly grew heavy, pressurized as if they were deep beneath the ocean. Akira felt his lungs struggle to expand. He tried to draw upon the energy in the room, but Kaelith’s presence acted like a dam, crushing his intent. She moved—not a dash, but a displacement of space. She was suddenly in front of him, her hand gripping his throat with a strength that felt like an iron vise.

Akira’s vision blurred. The intensity of her power was dizzying, a golden, scorching brilliance that made the beast-essence within him shrivel in terror.

"You’re just a scavenger, little Weaver," Kaelith whispered, her voice a velvet threat. "A gutter-born parasite who doesn't even know how to properly feed."

She slammed him against the tunnel wall, the impact knocking the air from his lungs. Akira thrashed, his hands clawing at her wrist, trying to tear through the barrier of her energy. Vax lunged forward, but with a casual flick of her hand, Kaelith sent a shockwave of force that threw him against the opposite wall, rendering him momentarily senseless.

"Look at me," Kaelith commanded, her face inches from his, her skin smelling of ozone and expensive silk. She tilted his head back, her thumb tracing the line of his throat with a cold, clinical curiosity. "You’re leaking potential everywhere. It’s a waste."

Akira felt the urge to strike, to lose himself in the violence, but he was pinned by a power so vast it made his own abilities feel like a guttering candle. He was trapped in the dark of the sewer, at the mercy of a woman who saw him not as a human, but as a battery to be drained.

"Vax," Akira choked out, his gaze flickering to the unconscious scavenger.

"Don't worry about him," Kaelith said, her voice dropping into a low, intimate rasp. She leaned closer, her lips brushing his ear, her breath cool and scented with something lethal. "Worry about whether I decide to keep you whole, or if I peel you open to see what makes you tick."

Akira’s pulse hammered, a frantic, desperate rhythm. The fear was sharp, but beneath it, the raw, carnal thrill of being hunted by something so lethal made his blood boil. He was a Weaver, and even in the dark, he could feel the threads of her power beginning to fray. He just needed her to be arrogant enough to get closer.

He didn't fight her grip. Instead, he let his body go limp, feigning surrender, while his fingers, hidden in the shadows of her cloak, began to weave a trap in the very air between them.

He didn't look at the gray husks of the Reclaimers; he felt their absence in the atmosphere, a quiet vacancy in the weave that told him they were well and truly gone.Vax wiped a streak of blood from his lip, his eyes dark with a mixture of residual fear and a predatory pride that made Akira’s stomach tighten. "We can’t stay here," Vax muttered, his voice still ragged. "The moment those boys didn't check in, the Spire sensors would have flagged this sector. If we want to hit the core, we have to move now, while they’re still recalibrating."Akira nodded, his fingers lingering on Vax’s hip for a second longer than necessary, grounding himself in the warmth of the man’s body before turning toward the ventilation shaft that led upward. "Lead the way, then. I’m do

The metallic tang of ozone and scorched flesh clung to the air like a shroud. Akira knelt in the gloom, his fingers buried deep into the ragged edges of Vax’s tunic. His own life-force pulsed through his palms, a violet, liquid fire that seeped into the scavenger’s jagged wound. He watched as the skin knitted itself back together, knit by agonizing knit, but the cost was staggering. Akira felt his own internal reserves hollowing out, leaving him lightheaded and swaying."Wake up," Akira hissed, his voice cracking. He didn't know if he was pleading with Vax or with the cold, uncaring city. "You don't get to die on me after what you almost did."Vax’s eyelids fluttered, a raw, ragged gasp breaking the silence. He shifted, his body arching in pain as he looked up at Akira. His eyes, usually sharp and cynical, were hazy with shock. "You… you idiot," he rasped, his voice barely audible over the distant drone of the Inquisitor gunships. "You burned half your soul to stitch me up. Why?"Akir

Outside, the city was a sprawling, neon-drenched nightmare, the upper levels shimmering with the false promise of safety. Akira moved with a newfound fluid grace, his senses tuned to the subtle vibrations of the metal and stone beneath his boots. He felt powerful—a predator who had finally learned the shape of his own claws."Stay close," Vax murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rasp against the wind. "The patrol routes change in the upper sectors. If we get caught in the light of an Inquisitor emitter, we’re going to have to cut through a lot of red tape."Akira glanced at him, a faint, sharp smirk playing on his lips. "I’m not scared of them anymore, Vax. You taught me how to set the trap. We’re the ones doing the hunting tonight."Vax didn't respond immediately. His jaw tightened, a hard line against the jagged scar on his face.

He looked up at the man holding him, the stranger whose pulse beat in rhythm with the echoes of the chamber."I’m the one who’s going to keep you safe," the man whispered, his breath hot and ragged against Akira’s ear. "And since you don't remember who you were... you’re finally all mine to decide."Akira frowned, pulling back just enough to study the man’s face. He didn't know why he knew it, but the name stuck to him like a shadow.Vax let out a low, shaky laugh, his thumb tracing the line of Akira’s jaw with a possessive, electric friction. "Yeah. Vax. She was so close he could taste the ozone of her power.Closer, he prayed, his fingers twitching in the dark.As she leaned in to deliver her final, chilling threat, the air didn’t just vibrate; it tore.
