The edge of the blade vibrated against the damp air a hairs breadth from Orin’s left eye. Rain and blood. Ran down the cold metal dripping onto the floor.

Fourteen seconds.

In his life Arthur had learned that panic was a luxury people couldn’t afford when under pressure. Now as Orin Clay, that training helped him survive. His heartbeat surged,. His mind stayed calm. The adrenaline that would have paralyzed a nineteen-year-old was converted into pure intent.

The red text in his vision didn't vanish. Instead it expanded, showing data like a spreadsheet.

[OBJECT: REFINED IRON ASSASSIN DAGGER]

[WEAKNESS: STRUCTURAL FLAW 4CM FROM THE HILT DUE TO QUENCHING. REQUIRED FORCE TO SHATTER: 45 NEWTONS.]

[ATTACKER STATUS: LEANING LEFT, WEIGHT BALANCED ON FOOT PREPARING TO TWIST AND PULL.]

Orin didn’t try to pull. He leaned into the space using the attacker’s momentum. As the blade began to twist Orin slammed his body weight against the carriage door aiming his shoulder at the hilts point.

Snap.

The metal. The assassin grunted in surprise holding a useless hilt.

Orin kicked the carriage door outward with all his strength. The heavy wood slammed into the assassin’s face throwing him backward. Orin tumbled out after him hitting the cobblestones.

The scene was chaos. The downpour turned the street into a blur. A paces away Silas was fighting two masked figures. Silas’s greatsword was a wheel of silver but his movements were sluggish. A deep gash on his thigh was pouring blood.

[TARGET: SILAS WRIGHT]

[STATUS: COMBAT FATIGUE, BLOOD LOSS (12%). TIME TO COLLAPSE: 120 SECONDS.]

[CURRENT ADVERSARY WEAKNESS: LEFT ACROMION PROCESS (SHOULDER JOINT) EXPOSED DURING WIND-UP.]

"Silas! Low left!" Orin roared.

Silas trusted him. Drove the pommel of his greatsword upward and to the left. The strike connected with a crunch against the assassins exposed shoulder joint.

There was no time to celebrate. The assassin Orin had knocked down was back on his feet drawing a sword.

"The trash can speak " the assassin hissed. "A lucky strike won't save you."

The man lunged. To Orin the movement broke down into lines of trajectory and glowing indicators.

[ATTACK PATHWAY: DRIFTING RIGHT, STAB TARGETING INTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN.]

[HOST BODY PHYSICAL CAPACITY: INSUFFICIENT TO DODGE.]

**[ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLE: LOOSE COBBLESTONE AT HOST’S RIGHT HEEL. WEIGHT BEARING: 80%.]**

Orin deliberately tripped over the cobblestone. He fell flat on his back.

The assassin’s blade sliced through the air where Orin’s throat had been. Orin grabbed the piece of the dagger and drove it upward into the assassin’s weak spot.

The metal sank in smoothly.

The assassin stiffened, choked and collapsed on top of Orin.

[TARGET ELIMINATED.]

[EXPERIENCE POINTS ACCUMULATED. EXTRACTING SOUL RESIDUE...]

A violent jolt of electricity shot from the dying man’s chest into Orin’s plexus. Orin gasped, his vision going white.

"Young Master!" Silas’s voice broke through the ringing in Orins ears. Silas hauled the killer off Orin and pulled him to his feet.

"Are you alright?" Silas asked, his face pale with panic.

Orin wiped the rain and blood from his forehead. "They were sent by Iris. The city gates are no longer safe."

Silas looked back toward the towering stone walls of the Capital. "If we don't use the gate the only way out is the lower drainage aqueducts."

Orin closed his eyes letting the Universal Archive System scan the horizon. A new set of data populated his mind.

"Then we take the aqueducts " Orin said, a smile touching his lips.

The descent into the underbelly was brutal. They abandoned the carriage taking a single pack of supplies and Silass heavy weapon.

As they stepped onto the damp stone-carved steps of the aqueduct the air grew thick with the smell of sulfur and decomposing matter.

[NOTIFICATION: ENERGY INVERSION IN PROGRESS]

[ ESSENCE STATUS: UNSTABLE. CURRENT INTEGRATION LEVEL: 12%]

[WARNING: IF ESSENCE IS NOT REFINED WITHIN THIRTY MINUTES THE HOST'S MERIDIANS WILL SUFFER IRREPARABLE EROSION.]

Orin gripped the iron railing his knuckles turning white. The spark he had stolen was fighting back.

"Hold the wall Young Master " Silas grunted, his hand anchoring Orins shoulder.

Orin looked ahead his gaze piercing through the gloom where the tunnel branched into three separate directions.

[TACTICAL MAP UNLOCKED: CAPITAL DRAINAGE SECTOR 4]

[LEFT PATH: BACKUP REGULATION VAULT. HAZARD LEVEL: LOW. RESOURCE DETECTED: MIDNIGHT LICHEN (POTENT YIN STABILIZER).]

[CENTER PATH: OUTFLOW. HAZARD LEVEL: HIGH ( DENSITY, OF MUTATED WILD BEASTS).]

[RIGHT PATH: ABANDONED SEWER SECTOR. HAZARD LEVEL: CRITICAL (STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE IMMINENT).]

"We take the fork " Orin ordered, his voice firm and commanding.

"The left?" Silas questioned, squinting into the darkness. "The main maps say the left path is an end, a closed vault from the old dynasty."

"The main maps are outdated " Orin said coldly.

"The left path has what I need to stay alive. Move, Silas. Every second we waste is a second my brother uses to take control of my inheritance."

They walked forward the water numbing Orins legs.

His body was weak. His mind was sharp.

He checked on Silas noting how blood he had lost.

He calculated the load of the ceiling above.

As they entered the tunnel it got colder.

The water got shallower, replaced by moss that lined the walls.

[ALERT: DETECTING MATERIAL CHANGE]

[OBJECT: MIDNIGHT LICHEN (LOW-GRADE)]

**[PROPERTIES: HIGHEST EXPONENT OF COLD-ATTRIBUTED ENERGY. IDEAL FOR NEUTRALIZING FIRE-ATTRIBUTED STAGNATION AND INDUCTION PROTOCOLS.]**

"Stop here " Orin murmured, his knees buckling.

He sat down in the stream.

"Orin!" Silas dropped to his knees beside him.

"You're burning up. Your skin feels like ice. What is happening to you?"

"The assassin... His core was fire-attributed " Orin managed to say.

"My shattered core acted like a vacuum pulling his dying essence inside. I need to balance the equation."

He tore a clump of the glowing Midnight Lichen from the wall.

The plants felt like nitrogen against his skin.

[INITIATING REFINEMENT MATRIX]

[STABILIZER: MIDNIGHT LICHEN]

[PROCESS: BALANCE ELEMENTAL RESIDUE TO PREVENT COMPLETE SOUL COLLAPSE.]

Orin stuffed the lichen into his mouth forcing himself to chew and swallow.

The reaction was instantaneous and agonizing.

[WARNING: CELLULAR SHOCK IN PROGRESS]

[INTEGRATION RATE: 35%... 55%... 80%...]

[CORE MODIFICATION UNLOCKED: CRITICAL VOLATILITY STABILIZED.]

Orins body went rigid.

His eyes rolled back as his consciousness was dragged into his internal landscape.

In his mind the shattered shards of his Azure Soul Core realigned.

The freezing property of the lichen crystallized the fragments.

When Orins eyes snapped open the red text had vanished.

The world was silent save for the dripping of water from the ceiling.

He looked down at his hands.

The trembling had stopped.

His skin was still pale.

**[CORE CONFIGURATION CALIBRATED]**

**[NEW REFINED TITLE: LEVEL 1 VOID SEED]**

**[CAPACITY: 50/50 VOID ENERGY]**

**[CURRENT STATE: COMPRESSED AND FUNCTIONAL.]**

Orin slowly stood up.

The physical fatigue was still present.

Silas was watching him from a feet away.

His face was a mask of awe and apprehension.

"Young Master... Your aura. It’s gone. I can't feel a thread of magic from you."

"The empire teaches us that a shattered core is the end Silas " Orin said.

"They are wrong. A shattered core is simply a vessel that has been cleared of its limitations."

He looked at Silass leg.

[TARGET DIAGNOSTIC: SILAS WRIGHT]

[CONDITION: INFECTION INFILTRATION AT 4%. MERIDIAN FLOW IMPEDED, BY 15%.]

[RECOMMENDED REMEDY: EXTERNAL CORES PRESSURE APPLICATION.]

"Sit down Silas " Orin commanded.

"We don't have time to rest " the bodyguard argued.

Orin placed his hand directly over Silas’s blood-soaked bandage.

He willed a fraction of the Void energy from his chest into his palm.

Silas gasped as a cold pulling sensation tore through his thigh.

The dark, contaminated blood was sucked out of the wound.

Silas stood up flexing his leg in disbelief.

The burning ache that had been dragging him down was completely gone.

"Logic and precision Silas " Orin said.

"When you know the mechanics of a problem the solution takes only a few seconds."

They moved through the remaining sectors of the aqueduct.

The tunnels became more abandoned.

Orin kept his eyes trained

The Archive continued to map the path.

Suddenly the blue lines of his interface pulsed violently.

[WARNING: VIBRATIONAL ANOMALY DETECTED AHEAD.]

[FREQUENCY MATCH: STRUCTURAL MOTION / BIU PEDAL ENTITIES.]

[COUNT: 1.]

[DISTANCE: 150 METERS.]

Orin halted instantly raising a hand to signal Silas.

The veteran bodyguard dropped into a crouch.

"Someone is waiting at the exit valve " Orin whispered.

A silhouette began to take shape.

The entity sat cross-legged on an iron pipe that controlled the overflow valves. It wasn't a patrol guard. The figure wore leather armor with silver trim like the high-level scouts from the Thorne clan. A short spear rested on his knees. Its tip glowed with a faint silver light.

[TARGET ANALYSIS IN PROGRESS...]

[NAME: KIAN FROST]

[CULTIVATION: STAGE 3 IRON-BODY APPRENTICE.]

[STATUS: ALERT, REFINED SYSTEM MONITORING.]

[WEAKNESS DETECTED: RIGHT KNEE MENISCUS LACKS MAGICAL ENHANCEMENT DUE TO AN FRACTURE ALIGNMENT ERROR.]

Orins mind went through Visks memories. Kian Frost. He wasn't a family member by blood. He was an unusual mercenary blacksmith. He had signed a contract with the outer court to use the clans deep-iron mines. Kian was obsessed with making metal and refining weapons. He didn't care about the nobilitys politics unless he got paid.

"Kian " Orin said quietly.

"He's a Stage 3 Iron-Body practitioner " Silas warned. His voice was tight with worry. "His skin can deflect steel blades. In this tunnel his short spear is very strong. If we fight him here it will be loud. Alert the upper barracks in minutes."

"Then we don't fight him " Orin said. His fingers tapped his thigh in a rhythm as he thought quickly. "A mercenary doesn't stay in a sewer, for Felix. He stays for a deal. We just need to offer him an one."

Orin stepped out of the shadows. His boots splashed in the water on purpose to announce he was there.

The extraction of a Stage 5 Earth-Core Grandmasters essence was not a thing. To the twelve bronze-plated guards standing at the southern edge of the Black-Water crossing it looked like the laws of nature were being changed by the pale nameless youth standing in the mud.Orin Clays bare palm was still touching Master Sols iron breastplate. The Core Devour Matrix inside his chest was humming fast it could be felt rather than heard. It was like a vacuum that was pulling everything in. The dense brown rock-like spiritual energy that had defined Sols cultivation for forty years was not just disappearing. It was being pulled out violently. It was being drawn along the silver pathways that went from Orins fingertips up to his collarbone. Sols massive chest was heaving, his fingers clawing at the stone bridge tearing his nails against the rough masonry. The vibrant glowing earth runes on his iron plate armor were fading, turning a chalky white as their energy was completely used up.[CORE DEV

The wind on the volcanic ridge did not scream it whispered, taking the heat from the blood of the men standing there.Five men from the Sol Syndicate held their swords tightly their bronze armor shining in the faint silver light coming from Kian Frosts new spear tip. The destruction of their machine had left a hole in the ground throwing pieces of copper and iron all over the black sand."You have a lot of guts to get in the way of our work boy," the leader of the Sol unit said. His name was Boros, a man with a face of old burn scars from working in the sulfur mines. His power core was pulsing with a green light that showed he was good with poison. "This area belongs to Master Sol. If you move things across the sand without permission it is against the rules. You will lose your things and your life."Orin Clay stood still his hands in his pockets. To the men he looked like a kid. A pale weak boy who was not a fighter and did not have any special powers..
