When he unlocked his front door and eased it open, bracing himself for chaos, he found an unexpected scene of tranquil domesticity.
Pearl was curled up sideways in his recliner, still wearing the hoodie and pants he had given her yesterday. When the door opened, her head snapped towards the entrance, and a radiant smile bloomed across her porcelain face.
“Erick,” she said, hopping down from the chair with effortless agility. “You returned.”
“I did,” Erick said, leaning back against the closed door to catch his breath. The apartment smelled faintly of his usual laundry detergent mixed with her lingering, intoxicating scent of vanilla and crushed lilies.
“Do you want me to do anything for you?” Pearl asked, her head slightly bowed.
“No, not even,” Erick replied quickly.
The idea of using someone to do his chores felt wrong, let alone an immature succubus who thought serving him was the only way to avoid returning back to the Nethers. He could not bring himself to look at her directly. Deep down, he felt a pang of guilt gnaw at his heart. Pearl was oblivious to the fact that the master she had sworn to serve was already seeking a way to dispose of her.

It was more difficult than Erick had anticipated. Rather than drive her away, he found himself drawing closer to Pearl as the days progressed.
Erick set strict boundaries: he strictly forbade Pearl from stepping outside into the hallway or going near the windows without the blinds drawn. The world of men was dangerous, and an undocumented, violet-eyed woman living off-grid would raise immediate red flags.
Pearl accepted the rule without complaint. In fact, she treated the single-bedroom apartment like a vast, magical paradise where everything was subject to her curiosity.
Erick introduced her to television. She thought it was an advanced crystal mirror with a sophisticated wand (the remote), which gave her a satisfactory sense of power once she knew how it worked. Within a couple of weeks, she had developed a borderline obsession with culinary channels. Erick was patient enough to teach her how to use the cooker, oven and microwave. He could not help laughing when Pearl marveled at ‘the box that breathes ice’.
Using Erick’s modest pantry, she taught herself how to chop vegetables, simmer stews, and bake bread, moving around the kitchen with child-like enthusiasm. Half of what she made could be classified as poison, but she presented everything to Erick with a proud face when he returned home after work. He attempted to eat what might have been a scrambled egg one time and ended up paying a lot of visits to the bathroom. Erick made it a habit to teach her how to cook in person afterwards.
Pearl was eager to learn. She behaved as if she had been granted a second chance at life, and she evolved at a rate that almost terrified Erick. He also noticed a few habits that firmly took root during the three-week course that they had stayed together.
The first was her manner of speaking. When Pearl was confident and happy, she addressed him simply as Erick. But when she was nervous or frightened, she addressed him as Master. There were times when Erick did not feel like talking and would retreat into his mind. Pearl often mistook this as a sign of anger and thought that she had done something wrong. When this happened, she retreated into his closet and stayed there until he came searching for her.
Erick had assured her several times that she did not have to retreat into the shadows because of him, but after finding her several times in the closet, he realized that it was not just a safe haven for her; she used it to ground herself when the world felt too overwhelming. In the end, Erick bought a pair of headphones and downloaded his favorite playlists in his old tablet. He taught Pearl how to use it so she could play whenever the silence in her haven felt too loud.
“Pearl,” he started one night, when the succubus was engrossed in a 90s romance movie called Paradise Blues.
“Yes?” she answered, blushing when Erick noticed her teary eyes.
“If you had the chance to be something else,” he hesitated, “I mean, if you got the chance to be with someone other than me without consequence, would you be keen to that idea?”
Pearl shifted uneasily. She misinterpreted the nature of the question, after all, she was not a typical woman.
“Hypothetically speaking,” Erick added, noticing how uncomfortable Pearl seemed with answering the question. “If there was a better home, where you could do more than just… You know what, forget I asked…”
“Erick,” Pearl said, moving closer to hold his hands in hers. She felt warm. Her eyes sought his, her golden pupils melting into her purple irises in a way that always hypnotized Erick. “I do not desire to be with someone else. Please do not ask of this again. The only way I can leave you is if you tell me to.”
“But is that what you want?” Erick pressed, feeling his insecurities melt with the warmth of Pearl’s touch.
Pearl looked down at their joined hands. Then she looked back into his eyes, her expression sincere.
“My kind exists to fulfill raw desire. That is how we survive. But here,” she smiled brightly, her eyes sparkly with tears, “I do not live because of lust. I live because you have a heartbeat, and it’s the most beautiful thing that I have come to know. You see me as Pearl, not just something to play with when you feel lonely.”
She lifted Erick’s hand and placed his palm over her bosom. He could feel her pulse beneath her soft, warm skin.
“I have a heart too, Erick. And it beats for you.”
Erick felt his cheeks burn.
“You’re watching too much romance,” he mumbled.
Pearl chuckled. She snuggled into Erick’s personal space and draped his arm over her shoulder, leaning back to resume watching her movie.
“I am living it,” she said.

Chapter 13: A New Beginning
The moving boxes were stacked haphazardly across the living room of Apartment 4B, three states away from the city Erick had called home for a decade. The coastal town of Pacific Reach was perpetually wrapped in sea salt, rolling ocean mist, and the muffled cries of gulls. It was quiet, unglamorous, and, most importantly – he hoped – far outside the jurisdictional patrol lines of Vanessa’s former sector. Erick had cashed in every favor he possessed to secure an urgent lateral transfer to the company’s sub-regional data depository. He had packed his life into the back of his sedan over a single panicked weekend, driven fourteen hours through the night with Pearl curled up asleep in the passenger seat, and signed a lease under a newly created LLC. He was safe. For now. Yet, despite the fresh sea air, a pervasive gray gloom seemed to follow Erick into every room. He threw himself into his work with mechanical, joyless precision, leaving early in the morning and returning with dark cir
Chapter 12: Half Broken
His mind spun. His resolve wavered. Could he build a happy, normal romance with Vanessa on the foundation of Pearl’s eternal damnation? Could he look at himself in the mirror every morning knowing the woman he loved was smiling beside him while the succubus who trusted him was being tortured somewhere in the Nethers? On Tuesday night, Pearl sat quietly beside him on the sofa. Sensing his profound melancholy, she didn’t try to seduce him or try to playfully distract him. Instead, she gently rested her head against his shoulder, placing her soft, porcelain hand over his trembling fingers.“When you are sad, everything here becomes cold,” Pearl whispered into the quiet room. “Whatever pain I have brought into your life... I am sorry.”Erick swallowed the lump in his throat, his fingers tightening around hers. It felt, in that moment, that the only thing keeping him from collapsing inwards was the grounding warmth of a succubus’s touch.Wednesday morning arrived under a blanket of heavy,
Chapter 11: Difficult Choices
The crisp Sunday air carried the scent of crushed autumn leaves and damp earth as Erick walked beside Vanessa through Riverside Park. For the past forty-eight hours, the atmosphere at the office had been suffocating. Vanessa had barely spoken three sentences to him, maintaining a cool, professional distance that felt entirely manufactured. Then, at five o’clock on Friday, she had slipped a folded sticky note onto his keyboard: Sunday. 2:00 PM. Riverside Park, by the weeping willow. Just us.Now, they walked in heavy silence along the paved path, keeping a deliberate foot of space between their shoulders. Vanessa wore a long camel trench coat, her hands buried deep in her pockets and her chestnut bob rustling in the autumn wind. When they reached a secluded clearing near the riverbank, sheltered beneath the drooping golden boughs of a massive willow tree, Vanessa stopped. She turned to face him, her hazel eyes stripped of her usual office charm.“I
Chapter 10: A Kind Promise
“I… I don’t know,” Pearl said softly. “I’ve told you everything that I’ve heard of them and what I felt.”Erick leaned back against the closet door, his knees almost giving in under his weight.Purgers. They sounded like some old order of witch hunters who would no doubt stop at nothing to extract a demon, and he would just be collateral damage. He wanted to think they were just objects of Pearl’s paranoia, but then, Pearl was a creature from another world. It made sense there was an organization that operated under everyone’s radar to exterminate anything that threatened humanity. He had never asked for an interdimensional war. He hadn’t sought absolute power, forbidden dark sorcery, or dominion over the underworld. He had just been a lonely, broken thirty-five-year-old loser sitting in an empty apartment, tired of feeling like a ghost in his own life. He had wanted a spark. He had wanted someone to look at him like he mattered.Erick looked over at Pearl. She was watching him with w
Chapter 9: The Beginning Of Trouble
Erick froze, his brow furrowing. A defensive irritation flared in his chest. “Pearl, come on. Are you... are you jealous? Look, I know this dynamic is weird, but you knew from the start why I performed the summon. I feel like Vanessa is something real… and I don’t want to lose this.”“This is not jealousy!” Pearl cried, her voice rising from the seductive whisper for the first time. Tears swelled at the corners of her eyes. “Master, look at me! Smell the air!”She grabbed Erick’s wrists, pulling him close. Her skin was ice-cold.“Her… her soul does not carry the scent of ordinary people,” Pearl stammered, her chest heaving. “Beneath her perfume she smells of consecrated steel and fire! She is a Purger!”The word hung heavily in the bedroom, foreign and sharp.“A Purger?” Erick repeated, his skepticism warring with the genuine terror that radiated from the succubus. “What are you talking about?”“They are the executioners in this world,” Pearl explained, her voice cracking with dread.
Chapter 8: A Succubus's Fear
The following weeks passed in a dizzying, golden blur. For the first time in what seemed like forever, Erick felt like the protagonist of his own life rather than an invisible bystander. His dates with Vanessa were effortless. They shared quiet dinners at dimly lit Italian bistros, took midnight walks along the city riverwalk, and exchanged flirty messages throughout the workday.Vanessa was everything Erick had ever dreamed of: brilliant, independent, and disarmingly tender. When she laughed, her hazel eyes crinkled at the corners with genuine warmth. When she reached across a table to brush her fingers against his knuckles, Erick felt a profound, grounding electric current that made the rest of the world fade into static. It was real. It had to be real. The only complication was the secret living inside his apartment.“She’s coming over tonight,” Erick announced on Friday afternoon, pacing across the living room as he adjusted the placement of two wine glasses on the dining table. “
