Lyon called Richard immediately.

His uncle answered on the first ring.

“Where are you?” Lyon asked.

“At home.”

“Stay there. I'm coming.”

“Lyon, listen to me. There are things you need to understand before you—”

“Then you can explain them when I arrive.”

He ended the call.

Paul was still examining the dead monitor in Archive 17. The room had become unnervingly quiet after the countdown, and the smell of dust seemed stronger now that the equipment had shut down.

“Your uncle knows something,” Paul

“Someone who died before I was born?”Lyon repeated the words slowly.Paul's voice crackled through the phone. “That's what Marcus said. He insists the person who gave Gun the final order was already dead when you were born.”“Did he explain how a dead person could give an order?”“He was about to, but he lost consciousness. The paramedics are treating him now.”Lyon glanced at the photograph in his hand.Henry Dwayne stood beside Marcus Vale, Victor Hale, and Kaleb Dwayne. Adrian Sterling's name appeared on the back, but the man himself wasn't in the picture.Someone else had been there.Someone Henry apparently trusted enough to bring into a private meeting. And someone whose influence had survived death.“Keep Marcus alive,” Lyon ordered. “Nobody questions him until a doctor clears him. Put him somewhere secure, and don't let the police take him away without informing me.”“Understood.”“One more thing. Did you catch the attackers?”“One vehicle escaped. The second crashed into a b

The attack on Evelyn Dwayne had been planned with one purpose.Silence her before she could tell Lyon anything else.Unfortunately for the people behind it, Lyon had gotten her out alive.Unfortunately for Lyon, the attackers had made one thing clear.Marcus Vale was running out of time.“Find him,” Lyon told Paul as their car sped away from the restaurant. “I want every address connected to him, every bank account he used, every person he contacted in the last year. If he has been hiding, someone has been helping him.”Paul glanced at him from the passenger seat. “I’ve already started. But there’s a problem.”“There’s always a problem.”“Marcus disappeared after Henry Dwayne died. His official records stop shortly afterward. No recent employment, no property in his name, no active bank accounts that we can find.”“Then stop looking for Marcus Vale.”Paul frowned. “What?”“Look for the people who have been keeping Marcus Vale alive.”For a moment, Paul said nothing. Then he nodded and

For several seconds, nobody moved.Kaleb Dwayne stood beside the black vehicle, his expression hardening as he took in the scene. Daniel was on the ground, one of the men had a weapon pointed at him, and Paul was crouched near the device that had fallen across the concrete. Then Kaleb looked at Lyon.“What are you doing here?”Lyon almost laughed.“That's an interesting question coming from you.”Kaleb's gaze flicked toward the device.“Give me that,” he ordered one of his men.Paul picked it up first.“Sorry,” he said. “Finders keepers.”The man with the weapon turned toward him.Lyon stepped between them.“Put it away.”“You don't give the orders here,” the man snapped.“Then let's see how your employer feels when the police arrive and find you pointing a weapon at an unarmed man.”Kaleb's face tightened.“Don't be stupid, Lyon. This is a family matter.”“Is that what you call sending armed men after a witness?”“You have no idea what Daniel has done.”“Then explain it.”Kaleb opene

By eight the next morning, Lyon had decided not to confront Kaleb.Paul disagreed.“You have a payment authorization, a recording of Gun discussing your death, and a witness who says Kaleb hired him to retrieve the registry. What exactly are we waiting for?”“Proof that connects Kaleb directly to the murder.”“How much more proof do you want?”“Enough to make sure he can't talk his way out of it.”Paul sighed and dropped a folder onto the desk.“Your family has made investigating a murder feel like an accounting exercise.”“That's because the money is what connects them.”Lyon opened the folder. Paul had spent the night tracing the transfer Kaleb made to Victor's network. The money had moved through three companies before reaching an account associated with Sentinel Risk Management. It was the same private security network that employed the guards who had disposed of Lyon's body.“How much?” Lyon asked.“Enough to cover the company's operating costs for several months. The transfer wa

At 11:48 p.m., Lyon received a second call from Daniel Cross.“I can meet you,” Daniel said. “But I need a guarantee that your people won't hand me over to the police.”“That depends on what you tell me.”“I have information about the night you were killed.”“Then start talking.”“Not over the phone.”Lyon glanced at Paul, who was already checking the address Daniel had provided.“You have twelve minutes before midnight,” Lyon said. “If you want my protection, you'll meet us at the location my assistant sends you. You'll come alone, and you'll bring whatever evidence you have.”“What if I don't trust you?”“Then we're finished.”Lyon ended the call.Paul looked up from his laptop. “The address he gave us belongs to an abandoned restaurant. Three vehicles have visited the property in the last hour, all registered to shell companies.”“Connected to Victor?”“Two are. The third is registered to a company I've never seen before.”“Can you identify its owner?”“I'm checking.”Lyon picked u

Lyon arrived at his mother’s house to find three security guards standing outside the gate. Two more were inside the compound. Paul had arranged the additional protection before they arrived, but Lyon didn’t relax. The message threatening Linda was still fresh on his phone, and Victor’s sudden interest in the registry suggested the situation had become more dangerous than either of them had anticipated. He stepped out of the car. “Where’s my mother?” One of the guards opened the door. “She’s inside, sir. She’s safe.” Lyon walked straight into the house. Linda was sitting on the sofa with a cup of tea between her hands. She looked up when he entered, and the relief on her face was immediate. “Lyon.” He crossed the room and sat beside her. “Did the man come back?” “No. He left after I told him I didn’t have anything.” “Did he give you his name?” “He said his name was Daniel. He claimed he had worked with your grandfather.” Lyon exchanged a glance with Paul. “Did you reco
