Room 4 hadn't changed since the last time. Same windowless box, same two chairs, same clock mounted above the door counting seconds Ezra didn't want to spend. This time Rourke was already seated when he walked in, tablet in hand, and she didn't tell him to sit before she started talking, which told him whatever this was, she wanted it over fast.

"The fourth man from the pier," she said. "The one your scene reports had dragged toward the river. We never recovered a body."

Garrick's shop felt crowded for the first time since Ezra had started treating it as a second home, six people now instead of four, Reyes seated stiffly near the door like a man unsure whether he'd been invited or simply tolerated. "Start talking," Ezra said, dropping into the chair across from him, every part of his body aching in ways that promised a long recovery he didn't have time to actually take. "What happens at day thirty to a binding that was never completable and can't be split either?" Reyes folded his hands on the table, old habit of composure returning slightly now that he had a problem to work through instead of a crisis to survive. "I've studied bindings for three centuries, mostly from the outside, watching what happened to hosts before the Nine scattered. An incomplete binding doesn't simply resolve itself cleanly at the deadline. It destabilizes. Think of it as pressure with nowhere left to release."

  • Chapter 45: What Happens to the Patient Man

Nobody moved for a long moment after the dust settled, the wrecked lab floor quiet except for Sorren's ragged breathing and the distant, fading sound of scattered operatives abandoning a fight that no longer had anything left to protect. Rourke reached Sorren first, pressing a torn strip of fabric hard against the wound in her shoulder, voice low and steady in the particular way of someone who'd done battlefield triage before and knew exactly how to keep panic out of her hands. "You're going to need a real medic," Rourke said. "Not just pressure and prayers." "I'll survive long enough for that," Sorren managed, teeth gritted. "Ask me again in an hour." Garrick knelt beside them both, checking Sorren's pulse with trembling fingers, the adrenaline of the fight finally draining out of him all at once. "You saved my life down in that chamber three weeks ago without knowing me at all," he said quietly. "I wasn't going to let a b

  • Chapter 44: Arguing With Certainty

"Vaelgrith," Ezra said, voice carrying across the wrecked lab floor, steadier than he felt. "That's your name too. Look at me. Look at what's left of you, and listen." The Unquestioned turned, gold-light gaze settling on him with the terrible patience of something that had never once needed to rush toward a verdict it already considered settled. **HOST OF THE BOUND FRAGMENT**, it said, voice arriving not through sound but directly behind Ezra's own thoughts, cold and absolute. **YOU CARRY WHAT REMAINS OF JUDGMENT, DILUTED BY DOUBT. DOUBT IS WEAKNESS. I AM WHAT JUDGMENT WAS MEANT TO BE, UNCOMPROMISED.** *It believes that completely,* Vaelgrith said, quiet, grim. *It has no memory of the three hundred years that taught me otherwise. It only remembers the certainty, not the cost that certainty eventually demanded of everyone around me.* "Then show it," Ezra said. "Everything. The farmer. The mother. Isolde's family. Show it wh

  • Chapter 43: The Judgment That Never Doubted

The light didn't fade. It gathered, pulling inward from every corner of the lab floor, cables and containment units crumpling like paper as whatever had been building inside that cracked stone finally found a shape to pour itself into.It stood eight feet tall by the time it finished forming, robed in judgment's colors the way Vaelgrith had looked in the memory of that pale, golden hall, except wrong, every proportion slightly exaggerated, every line of its posture carrying none of the doubt Ezra had watched the real Vaelgrith learn to carry over the last three weeks.*That is me,* Vaelgrith said, horror threading through every syllable. *Or what I was. The part of me that never doubted, never questioned, never once considered that certainty and righteousness might not be the same thing. Residue. A fragment that never made it into the binding, because it was never capable of doubt to begin with.*The figure turned its featureless gold-light face toward the

  • Chapter 42: Twelve Against Five

Three operatives went down fast, Threat Read and three weeks of accumulated instinct finally paying for themselves, but the remaining nine adjusted within seconds, falling back into the same drilled countermeasures Ezra remembered from the training grounds, spreading wide instead of clustering, forcing the five of them to fight back to back instead of as a tight, mutually covering unit."They're herding us," Damon shouted, parrying a strike that would have opened his ribs a second earlier. "Toward the platform!"Ezra felt it too, the fight's shape bending deliberately, every exchange pushing their small group closer to the humming machinery and the pale stone remains at its center. He understood, with sick clarity, exactly what that meant a half second before Reyes's voice confirmed it."Careful where you retreat," Reyes called out, calm as ever from the platform's edge. "I'd hate for an accident near the extraction array. Volatile energy, imprecise contai

  • Chapter 41: The Patient Man

"You expected us," Ezra said, keeping his voice level despite the tension coiling tight through every muscle in his body."I expected you eventually." Reyes stepped further into the light, unhurried, hands clasped loosely behind his back, the posture of a man discussing weather rather than standing three feet from five people who had every reason to want him dead. "I confess the timing surprised me slightly. I assumed the ritual's failure would leave you recovering longer than one night. You're tougher than your file suggested, Ezra Kade. I should adjust my notes.""You knew about the ritual.""I know everything that happens to you, eventually. I've made certain of that since the training grounds." Reyes's eyes flicked briefly to Sorren, something cold and assessing crossing his face. "Including your unexpected mercy toward the eighth. Noble. Expensive, given what it's cost your binding's completion, but noble."*He is stalling,* Vaelgrith said, q
