Chapter 85: One Word
"Enough."Cain said it quietly. He didn't raise his voice or look at anyone in particular. The word went down the corridor like a hand laid flat on a table, and every rifle in the building dropped an inch. The lead hunter's finger came off the trigger. His mouth opened, shut again, and stayed shut.Ethan stayed on his hands and knees because he couldn't do anything else. Blood ran from his shoulder, his hip, and a hole in his back he'd stopped trying to count. Regeneration was working on it all at once and charging him for every stitch. His arms shook.Cain stopped three paces away. Up close he looked older than the man Noah had described. Fifty, maybe more. Silver hair, pale eyes, a coat so clean it looked like it belonged to someone who'd never bled on anything. His right hand went into his coat.*There it is,* Ethan thought. He tensed, though he didn't have much left to tense with. He'd braced for a gun, then for a blade, and in the end he just braced for the end. It was a tired fe
Chapter 84: Alone in the Corridor
"Hands where I can see them," the lead hunter said. His voice shook a little. That was the first thing Ethan noticed. "Nobody wants this to get worse.""It's already worse." Ethan wiped blood from his lip with the back of his wrist. "You just don't know it yet.""There's no way out behind you. The door's rated for explosives.""I noticed."He had. He'd also noticed the corridor behind the lead hunter, longer than it looked, with three side doors and a red exit sign at the far end that someone had left lit. Six armed people between him and it. Maybe more coming."Last warning," the lead said."Is that the one you tell everyone is the last one?"The lead didn't answer. He nodded once, and the corridor erupted. Two rifles fired. Accelerated Reflexes caught the first shot a hair before it left the barrel, and Ethan slid sideways along the wall, the round chewing a hole in concrete where his ribs had been. The second grazed his thigh and Pain Conversion drank it in, hot and bright, already
Chapter 83: Alarm
The door swung open and a man in a grey Research Center coat stepped through, hands visible at his sides, a lanyard swinging against his chest. Late forties. Tired eyes. No weapon Ethan could see.Noah went rigid. "Night duty lead," he breathed. "He runs this floor.""Evening," the man said, like they'd bumped into each other at a coffee machine. His gaze moved from Noah to Mira to the terminal, and finally settled on Ethan's bare palm still flat against the glass. "Bearer lock. Eleven years I've worked nights here, and I've never once seen that panel light up.""We're leaving," Ethan said."You are." The man nodded slowly, almost sympathetic. "I just want you to understand it isn't up to me." He touched two fingers to his collar. "Records wing. Three intruders, one confirmed bearer. Director's already been notified."Red light flooded the room. A siren started somewhere deep in the walls, a slow, climbing tone Ethan felt in his back teeth. The terminal chimed once, and the screen wen
Chapter 82: What Feeds Behind the Door
"Host location confirmed," Ethan said. The words came out flat, like he was reading them off a menu. "It found me the second my hand touched the glass."Noah swore under his breath. "Then Cain gets the same answer.""It doesn't talk to Cain. Not that we know of." Mira's eyes never left the terminal. "Look. It's opening."The redaction lifted line by line, like someone drawing back a curtain. The blacked-out blocks went pale and the text underneath came through, older and plainer than the summary above it.Mira read it aloud, fast and low."'Beyond the First Gate there is an Entity. It is not dead, and it is not wholly asleep. It feeds upon what the surface calls ability, and it has always fed upon it. It grows aware in proportion to what it is fed.'"Nobody said anything."Fed," Ethan said finally. "Fed by what? The hosts?""Keep listening." Mira's voice thinned. "'Each awakening feeds it. A single bearer is a small meal. A city of bearers is a feast.'"Noah stepped away from the door
Chapter 81: Founding Record
"Notifying Director Cain," Noah read from over Mira's shoulder, and the color went out of his face. "That's not a log entry. That's a live alert.""How long do we have?" Ethan asked."Depends where he is. It goes to his personal device. If he's asleep, ten minutes before anyone acts on it." Noah glanced at the door. "If he isn't, two."Mira didn't look up. She had a portable drive in the terminal's side port already, one hand steady on the keyboard, the other pressed flat against her sternum like she was holding herself together. "Copying now. It's a big archive. I can't promise it finishes.""Then read it while it copies," Ethan said. "Out loud. Fast."She did."The header says 'Architects Division, Founding Record.' It's old. The formatting is old. Somebody digitized it, but the original wasn't written on anything like this." Her eyes moved down the screen. "There's a summary. 'The Mechanism was constructed to select, bind, and constrain capable individuals, such that no single bear
Chapter 80: Recalculating
"It's lost me," Ethan whispered, staring at the notification suspended mid-process in his vision. "Not approximating. Not catching up slowly. It genuinely doesn't know where I am right now.""For how long," Mira breathed, close behind him in the dark corridor."I don't know. I've never seen this before."Noah kept his flashlight low, sweeping the floor rather than the walls, the practiced habit of someone who'd clearly done this kind of work before his career detoured into whatever tonight had become. "Let's not waste whatever window that buys us. Records wing is two floors down, west corridor. I've been there for briefings, never after hours."They moved together, Noah's familiarity with the building's layout cutting through corridors that would have taken Ethan and Mira considerably longer to navigate alone. The Research Center felt different from the Tower had … no shifting walls, no ancient carvings, just the sterile, fluorescent hum of an institution built to study things it appa
