It was raining cats and dogs tonight,
And birds were cradling their chicks in their nest.
The civilian sector is a very humble space as of now, with stalls that were dying out in sync.
with little to no walking on the street.
An old man came by his usual spot and banged the counter to wake up the owner. The owner wasn't act displeased from being woken up from his beauty sleep, plus sales have been slow lately, so he would appreciate it if sales came in at all.
Though this old geezer was too much, he still accepted him with open arms.
"Hey, got any spare umbrella? I wrecked mine just now," the old man showed his wind-torn rain guard.
"Hmm, let me be done warming your noodles and make some cocoa for the rain its a no-brainer, you had need some flames through these stormy curtains." The stall owner passed an umbrella from the hook behind the door.
servings of noodles and hot cocoa for the night, he couldn't lie knowing his body was a catastrophic combo, but he can't stop, plus it was too late to make anything.
"Would be missing your good cooking, as it seems my work is done here." Finishing the meal, the old man exclaimed on his way out, pulling out his umbrella with a briefcase in hand.
The stall owner saw his fleeting figure in the distance and sighed. That was his last and only customer, and he was leaving. Sigh, one can only hope for the best.
He went to do his usual cleaning before finally heading to bed. a lab coat hung on the chair his last customer had sat, he probably forgot it,
Except this was a usual trick,
'The old man always forgets to tell his dry cleaner to give it to his dry cleaner, but always remembers to call his dry cleaner that was nearby to pick it up. Now it was a frequent thing. why um i not surprised, huh.." the stall owner said to himself.
folding it and placing it in his own wardrobe.
The light of this stall was dimmed as its lords takes to his sleep.
Still walking the street was the old man, his tummy rumbled with his body giving him signals of nature's call. It always happens, he cant get to keep himself from doing the 'do' every time he had a noodles and coco all together. He was hoping the cold weather would slow down metabolism till he reached about to blocks away. Guess he would have to go now. Luckily for him, there was a bush after this crossing he could immediately use.
He got into the push and pulled down his pants and began grunting and making weird noises you wouldn't expect from one of the top minds in Zuru settlements.
A quick walk-through got his attention. A couple of men seemed to be looking for something or someone.
"Shit! What's the chance they aren't after my research result?" he brought his briefcase closer as he was sure he wasn't thinking too much the moment one of the men said old man and briefcase.
He waited in patience, as now his back had begun to hurt and he had no choice but to use nature's tissue rolls, and covering up with twigs and sand.
his case to his chest as he tiptoed comically.
"Hey there, he his get him," a man yelled.
. The old man ran through the road, getting behind torches and men in black.
There was a T junction in front, he wasnt of which route to take. he couldnt go home anymore; he could only hope the hotel on the third block was still open to guests. Usually, they would open regardless, for an expert at the E rank and above . he was really unlucky to bump into this unlucky bunch.
At least there aren't any superhumans or else...
He thought to himself as he made a cross-section to his right, this way led to the hotel and was in the opposite direction from his home.
For the next 10 minutes, he ran and was soon out of breath, and he stumbled into a puddle, downing the water. Half the rain should fill up the pothole, but he had to preserve. Getting to his feet was hard enough; if not for the special serum he had taken to improve body function, he would be dead by now.
"i better catch a break and rest a bit," he took a breather and sat by a signpost of an abandoned shop. One of those that was left out after the apocalypse and mutant invasion. Some of the battles were done on this part. Good thing the government managed to push them back, but it wouldn't change the fact that this part was too near the walls. There's a chance of a breach from mutant rampage.
"hey over here, check this." It seemed like someone amongst the men had enough tracking intellect and could spot the obvious in this stormy rain. A pot hole this big, yet water this little, means something fell inside, and since the vehicle passed it had to be their target.
They are coming....the old man thought and tried to find somewhere else, the shop looked like the most ideal place to hide, so he pulled the door handle to test his luck.
creak!*
He would know if he's lucky or not if he survived this; he walked quietly.
Pkrrrg!
A can fell from the shelf, rolling out, alerting this location to the trailers.
"shit! someone else is here, judging from the can roll, he ought to be behind those shelves, let's just he takes the brunt and not me," the old man cursed while crawling to a corner of the store.
A figure ran out of the building, afraid of being surrounded buthe could never be more wrong. As soon as he got out, tasers were already in wait, fired, and he was soon bound and brought away.
"Phew ~ that was close, now I can head and really cleanse my system ." The old man walked out of the store after being sure the coast was clear.
Then there were footsteps, but it wasn't from outside, but from inside. Sure, this old geezer was definitely sure there were two of them just now, including him. Now, a duo walked out of the abyss of the shop, one tall, one young.
a little boy with a dead, lonely gaze. His eyes bled black. Next to him was a man with simple features.
"Hello, professor, how about we talk?" the man said with a devilish grin as he walked close,
bam
A briefcase was tossed before the simple-looking man could get any closer.
"Please take it, that's half my life research there, please let me be. I really have nothing else to offer." The old man cowered, but he soon regretted his actions
. The man just smiled. The next second, his shoes crushed the case into dust, if that was even possible.
A painful sensation flooded the old scientist's heart. "My life... my youth, hard work...all gone!"
It was a very harsh torture, but that won't stop what's coming soon. He found himself lightly levitating. His mind tried to make sense out of everything, and that's when his eyes locked with that gaze once more.
His consciousness slipped away into eternal darkness, never to be free again.
A glowing orb was being absorbed into the eyes of the young one; he was devouring years of information, memories, and intelligence, and every time he did, he couldn't help but remark.
"delicious."
"Don't get corrupted easily, you have to learn to tame and control corruption, not the other way around," the man said, walking towards the corpse of the old scientist. "Now, let's do some touchings, shall we?"
glowing eyes, warping skin
With that, a new face was born onto the body of a respected scientist; his body shifted to fit the face of the owner's skin accurately.
. Soon, only a dead body was left in the shop with numerous oil cans rolling away to darken the pigment.

Siri led the way, but it was really her memories that pulled them forward. With her quiet guidance—and Jane’s steady presence at her side—they began retracing the places where she and Dr. Colosso, now Kran, had once circled each other as an almost-couple. They walked through stretches of the facility and the broken city that were haunted more by ghosts of the past than by anything visibly dangerous. They stopped where he used to wait for her between shifts, at the cracked bench by the outer corridor window where the sun bled orange through dust. They paused in the narrow alley that once served as their shortcut, where the walls seemed to lean together in a conspiratorial hush. Siri’s voice shook as she pointed out the quiet corners where he’d rambled about theories and futures and impossible dreams in place of confessing feelings he never quite dared to say aloud.Jane said little during all of this. She didn’t know the old Colosso, didn’t share these memories, but she understood grie

Heist
An orb glowed on a ring-shaped plate. A scientist wearing a face shield was reassembling the orb with a picker and spatula for what felt like the ten-thousandth time. He had tried multiple patterns already. Hopefully, this time would be a success."Hey, Lorne, would you hand me the chip of the core? That should be the final piece to this puzzle. Let's pray it doesn't explode." The scientist grimaced, extending a hand toward Lorne, his new assistant, who was holding a chunk of Nest Core worth dozens of lives."Here, Professor," Lorne answered. It had been three days, yet they still hadn’t succeeded in creating what they were after. There wasn’t much time. According to the military, the system might crash the moment the Merc Association obtained a C rank or a New Path. The professor attached the chip of Nest Core to the open part of the core. Immediately, a rainbow wave of energy spread to all corners of the lab and beyond. The scientist, Garfield, flinched as sweat dripped down his for
it's not the letter.... it's the mail that's off.
“Is that the last one?” Jane said to the secretary, who was tidying up the papers on the table. She, on the other hand, was sipping her morning coffee from her mug.“Yes, Captain, that was the last one,” the secretary said anxiously.“Leave the rest to me, then,” Jane reassured her, her hands picking up the paper on the table before she took her seat and gave the chair a twirl.Sigh...“I sent letters to five different destinations, secretly, to those I found fitting for the Special Squad. Those I could trust, as they would focus more on missions outside the base,” Jane said out loud, though she didn’t seem to be talking to anyone. She had chosen individuals known for their resourcefulness and who had proven their loyalty through past missions. Each had unique qualities: a strategist who could outsmart adversaries, a medic who excelled in high-pressure situations, and a technician with unrivalled skills in hacking and engineering, making them indispensable for missions beyond base bor

The birds were screeching just beneath the clouds as the sun set on the event of the day.An awarding ceremony for the soldiers who had accomplished the first-ever Rank C mission would be taking place at the sector front. The commander had taken it upon himself to honour the heroes who brought hope back to the last lamplight of humanity. With the apocalypse in full swing, it was hard to make anything feel official, but the military managed, making it at least half as good as ceremonies from the old world.Jane watched the setup. To her, all these were mere formalities that could have been skipped—yet the constant, rapid tempo of her heartbeat said otherwise.Father… little Jane hasn’t let you down.Jane’s cheeks went wet as tears slipped down onto her fist, clenched tightly at her waist.“Is everything fine, Captain? I can’t help but notice that you haven’t dressed up for the ceremony.” At some point, the commander had managed to appear at her side.“Ah, Commander—” Jane flinched, the
