Growing Goo
last update2025-04-11 04:03:01

“Goo…?” Max muttered subconsciously.

A squirming body of thick fluid bobbed its head at Max, who was studying the strange creature with curious eyes. He reached out and poked it; the goo flinched back shyly, then slowly crept closer again.

“It’s fine, you can trust me, lil’ guy,” Max said with a smile, releasing a small pulse of his energy. The goo sensed it and immediately bobbed its head once more before launching itself at Max. He flinched and raised his hands in front of him on reflex.

When he opened his eyes, the goo was gone.

“Where did it go…?” he muttered, glancing around. While searching for it, he noticed a soldier heading his way.

The soldier had been sent to fetch him. Max had taken so long that the captain felt something was off, so a man was dispatched to check in case of any mishaps—besides, they were about to leave.

Max couldn’t be bothered about the goo for now. He climbed into the vehicle the soldier had brought, and they drove off. Thanks to the ride, they arrived at the site fairly quickly.

When they got there, Max saw several ill and maimed men. The sight alone showed how cruel the apocalypse could be. Keeping a stern expression and hiding his emotions, he turned to the soldier who had led him there.

“Where’s my butler?”

The soldier looked him over, a bit confused. Max really did seem like a spoiled rich brat, he thought, before jerking his chin forward. “Come with me.”

Beneath a makeshift shed stood a huge, heavily-armored military bus-like van, looming like a demonized fortress. Beside it, under the shade, a small table had been set up. Two men were locked in a game of chess, while a woman stood by their side, watching the board with sharp, focused eyes.

“You’ve done it again, Senior. Nice move. Now it’s my turn. Checkmate!”

A familiar laugh echoed in Max’s ears. Lorne. The old butler seemed to be doing just fine. But there was a new question in Max’s mind: who was this ‘Senior’ he was talking to?

“Ei, Lorne, you got me there,” the older man replied with a hearty chuckle. “And say, hasn’t your young master arrived yet? I’d love to see such a valiant young man. It’d be nice to chat—find out what makes young blood boil… Hahaha!”

“Stay here,” the soldier beside Max said, then walked into the shed clearly makeshift.

Max remained outside, quietly categorizing the people within by their voices. He was already sure Lorne was inside, and that alone was enough to ease some of his tension.

A short while later, the soldier stepped out and gestured at him. “You can come in.” Then he left to rejoin his comrades.

Max entered the shed.

Inside, the atmosphere was strangely relaxed, despite the heavy military presence. A middle-aged man in a weird tux with strings and buttons as if mechanically woven with tricks. His shoes were well polished, he even had a pocket watch, a man of good antique taste indeed

“There you are, Max,” the man in a tux chimed, his eyes lighting up. “Come, come. I was just wondering when you had popped up. I am glad you joined us. Janee here told me everything.”

Max looked up to see the woman he didn't bother to identif. Shee was actually the captain they had met earlier. She threw a wink max just nodded,, making her giggle

. Hell, is the captain flirtin....tf am I even thinking?

Lorne, who had been standing beside the chess table, turned and straightened. “Young Master, over here.” He moved closer, a faint smile on his face. “Let me introduce you properly this time.”

He gestured between them. “This  Seniorhere is Sir Garfield . he was the one government sent to research an item on D section.”

max gave the man a deep look,hw wasnt guving any bad aura except his odd dresscode but that wont stop max from making a valuable ally

"I am max,we are in you care sir Garfield"

Garfield smirked impressed by the gentleman “how nice? well it's my honour.” His gaze gave max a brief scan and noticed how neat the man look even in a time of war like this he seemed to be a man of hygiene,

max had be shocked if he knew what garfield thought, cause he himself didnt notice his mended costume and less stinky body that he hardly wash.it was as if his waste and sweat was being devoured.

soon a soldier ran into the hall apologising to sir Garfiled ,before informing them that they had found a nest ,northeast about eight kilometers

"How sure are you about this , wheres the rest of your team shouldnt the raven mercenary be amongst your crew did they abscon???"the captain threaded her gaze like a serpent waiting for her prey slip into her deadly maw.

he shook his head signifying 'no' as began to sweat out of nervousness

"No?they were killed, all of them?" max was the one that asked this time,

"how did ordinary zombie goo men kill,a couple of D ranked men, thats not possible, right?"garfield frowned his hand hovering over the next chess piece, placing the king ina corner and the a pawn bait covered by it

"they weren't ordinary sir, they had...intelligence!"as soon as those words left the privates mouth, every where quiet down the king piece Lorne held slipped it echoes ringing in the now frozen max...

Siri led the way, but it was really her memories that pulled them forward. With her quiet guidance—and Jane’s steady presence at her side—they began retracing the places where she and Dr. Colosso, now Kran, had once circled each other as an almost-couple. They walked through stretches of the facility and the broken city that were haunted more by ghosts of the past than by anything visibly dangerous. They stopped where he used to wait for her between shifts, at the cracked bench by the outer corridor window where the sun bled orange through dust. They paused in the narrow alley that once served as their shortcut, where the walls seemed to lean together in a conspiratorial hush. Siri’s voice shook as she pointed out the quiet corners where he’d rambled about theories and futures and impossible dreams in place of confessing feelings he never quite dared to say aloud.Jane said little during all of this. She didn’t know the old Colosso, didn’t share these memories, but she understood grie

An orb glowed on a ring-shaped plate. A scientist wearing a face shield was reassembling the orb with a picker and spatula for what felt like the ten-thousandth time. He had tried multiple patterns already. Hopefully, this time would be a success."Hey, Lorne, would you hand me the chip of the core? That should be the final piece to this puzzle. Let's pray it doesn't explode." The scientist grimaced, extending a hand toward Lorne, his new assistant, who was holding a chunk of Nest Core worth dozens of lives."Here, Professor," Lorne answered. It had been three days, yet they still hadn’t succeeded in creating what they were after. There wasn’t much time. According to the military, the system might crash the moment the Merc Association obtained a C rank or a New Path. The professor attached the chip of Nest Core to the open part of the core. • it's not the letter.... it's the mail that's off.

“Is that the last one?” Jane said to the secretary, who was tidying up the papers on the table. She, on the other hand, was sipping her morning coffee from her mug.“Yes, Captain, that was the last one,” the secretary said anxiously.“Leave the rest to me, then,” Jane reassured her, her hands picking up the paper on the table before she took her seat and gave the chair a twirl.Sigh...“I sent letters to five different destinations, secretly, to those I found fitting for the Special Squad. Those I could trust, as they would focus more on missions outside the base,” Jane said out loud, though she didn’t seem to be talking to anyone. She had chosen individuals known for their resourcefulness and who had proven their loyalty through past missions. Each had unique qualities: a strategist who could outsmart adversaries, a medic who excelled in high-pressure situations, and a technician with unrivalled skills in hacking and engineering, making them indispensable for missions beyond base bor
