Futile Effort

Mr. Loreson and his wife were having lunch, but it was as though they were having a funeral party. The atmosphere was gloomy and the food tasted like sawdust in their mouth.

They should have picked a date for Vince’s funeral, but they didn’t want to bury their son without first taking vengeance.

The old couple had had to put away their phones and stayed away from the television so that they wouldn’t go crazy with the news that were flying around.

“CEO Vince Loreson committed suicide months after he took over from his father, Mr. Loreson.”

“What could have gone wrong?”

“Vince Loreson had it all; he was handsome, rich, and could get any woman of his choice. What would prompt a young man like that to kill himself, and on his birthday?”

“Something isn’t adding up, and Vince’s parents have gone very mute…”

The news was endless.

Everyone had something to say, and the more they heard and listened to all the lies being peddled on the news and questions being asked, the more aggrieved they were. Last night, Mrs. Loreson had had difficulty sleeping. She had almost lost it completely.

As they ate, their teeth crushed against each other with rage and venom. They weren’t speaking to each other, but their rage was in agreement with one another. It carried a heavy message that only they both could understood.

“Mr. Loreson, you have a guest, sir,” his doorman informed him.

Loreson almost screamed his head off for the interruption. This wasn’t some bloody romantic couple’s lunch, but at the same time, they were sharing a grief that felt sacred to just the both of them, and his presence made it seem as though he was interrupting their moment of silence.

Each time they stayed silent in each other’s company, they were simply honoring Vince in their own way.

“We are having lunch,” Loreson snapped.

The doorman wanted to leave, but Mrs. Loreson stopped him.

“Who is the guest?” She asked the doorman.

“Jules,” he responded.

Loreson scoffed bitterly while his wife muttered and said, “The clingy woman.”

She never liked Jules. She only accommodated her because of what they would have benefited from their family if they had succeeded in matchmaking Vince with Nesse, but now that everything had gone south, her hatred for Jules had tripled.

“Should I ask her to leave?” The doorman asked.

“No, we will see her in some minutes,” Mrs. Loreson said.

The doorman bowed and excused her.

“I don’t think that was a good idea. She knows better than to show her face here,” Loreson said with anger.

“Now is the time to actually see her, Lores,” she said. “There is already a bad narrative out there against this family, regardless of the fact that we are grieving. When we eventually pull through with our plans, we must leave no traces,” she added.

“You are right,” Loreson agreed.

He wasn’t usually an agreeable man, but Vince’s death had now made him feeble.

The couple got up and went to their living room where Jules was waiting for them. The moment Jules saw them, she got up and went over to them and blew kisses in the air for Mrs. Loreson.

“I am so sorry for your loss, Benita,” she said.

“You have said that a thousand times already,” Mrs. Loreson responded stiffly.

She did not appreciate being addressed by her name, especially by someone like Jules. Jules might be the mother of a very rich and successful woman, but she just wasn’t her daughter. Mrs. Loreson was always disgusted at how Jules wanted to fit in so badly that she was almost licking the ass of everyone she came across.

As long as you had power, wealth, and influence, Jules had more than enough laughter and love and empty kisses to give.

Mrs. Loreson really hated her.

“We are not welcoming guests now,” Mr. Loreson stated without bothering to hide his displeasure at Jules presence.

Jules became a little uncomfortable when their hostility became too much to handle or look away from.

“Then I should be really quick,” Jules said.

“Great idea,” Mrs. Loreson declared.

They both stared at Jules deeply as they waited for her to speak. Their hostility and impatience ate deep into Jules, and for a second, she wondered if she hadn’t made a mistake coming here.

“It’s about my daughter, Nesse,” Jules began carefully.

She understood that the Loreson family was grieving and this was a very delicate time for them, and the last thing she wanted to do was make things worse or even upset them.

“What about her?” Mrs. Loreson asked, tilting her head to the side to give Jules a meaner glare.

“Listen, Benita,” Jules started, but Mrs. Loreson had had enough of that already.

“Cut the bullshit, Jules. You are not even eligible to call me that name, do you understand?” Mrs. Loreson scolded bitterly. “I am Mrs. Loreson to you,” she corrected.

Jules would have been upset, but she already told herself that Benita was going through a rough patch, so her emotions would definitely be raw. They were friends, Jules was convinced of that, and she wouldn’t let this to come in between their friendship.

“Nesse has no hand in what happened to Vince,” Jules said. “Getting her arrested and placing her in custody is not right,” she added.

The couple became more upset. The fury in their eyes almost burnt Jules, but she didn’t budge.

“She hasn’t even slept in prison yet,” Mr. Loreson muttered angrily.

“We have been friends,” Jules tried to remind them.

“Until that daughter of yours killed my son!” Mrs. Loreson lashed out venomously.

“Why would Nesse have any reason to do that? Why would she want Vince dead?” Jules asked deeply. “We were going to matchmake them together,” she reminded them.

“And right after, she ran off, thinking that she could get away with this,” Mrs. Loreson continued, ignoring Jules’ words.

“But he committed suicide,” Jules just had to let out the words.

Mr. Loreson stood up with rage and pointed a finger at Jules.

“Until our son is avenged, Jules, no one is going to be happy in this city,” he threatened dangerously.

Jules knew that this wasn’t an empty threat, and more than that, her coming had just been rendered useless.

IRON’S POV“Don’t beat yourself up about it too much, Lord Dante,” Blake kept telling me.For the entire day, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of what seemed like the recent revelation to me, and the guilt that everything the Titans might have been facing was all because of me.“The most important thing is that you now know that there is a problem, and in my opinion, that helps to tackle it,” he added.“You are just trying to be supportive, Blake, but it will not take too long before you tell the other Titans and a rebel will be planned against me,” I told him. From the previous day, to the entire night, and till this very moment, we were still deliberating on this particular issue.“You should know now that I don’t act that way, Lord Dante, and you might just be surprised at how loyal and committed the rest of the Titans are to you,” Blake said without sounding offended. “But speaking of Givan and Norman,” he added.I shook my head.Thinking day and night about it wasn’t going to cha

NESSE’S POVI stood in front of my vanity mirror and stared at my stomach. Before now, I would do it with dread, but I was tired of letting this damn disease to control how I handled things. I was always at the helm of every affair that concerned me.And this wouldn’t be different. But I had been stunned to speechlessness for a few minutes; the roundness in my stomach had increased since the last time I saw it.“Didn’t I take a look at it yesterday morning?” I asked myself.I did.I looked at it every freaking morning because each time I opened my eyes at dawn, that was the first thing that came to my mind, no matter how hard I tried to shove it off, and so, I always checked to ensure that I would never be taken unaware. But this morning, I was deeply taken unaware, and the swell I saw left me speechless for a few minutes.“When did it grow to this size?” I continued to ask myself.Till now, I couldn’t touch my stomach, and even when I showered, I ensured to keep off that area, in sli

IRON’S POV“Hades is alive,” I said for the umpteenth time.I paced about the floor of my chamber and kept pondering on the thought.Blake was right here with me, but he had stayed quiet all along. The Titans had been locked up in a separate room until I had come to a conclusion on what I wanted to do with them.Death wasn’t the first thing that came to my mind.Right now, I was even still trying to digest everything that they had told me.“And he is the leader of the Valhallahs,” I added. These two revelations were doing my head in.As many times I had repeated the words to myself and out loud, I still couldn’t believe it. It felt as though Givan had merely cooked up a story, and I might not have honestly believed him if he hadn’t shown us the power that he had been given to bury beside our walls to weaken them.A lot of revelations had been spilled that left me utterly speechless.“The Valhallahs were part of the realms who attacked this Organization during the war that happened thr

HADES’ POVThe joy in my heart, knowing that I had murdered the Seer knew no bounds. As I made my way back to the Structure, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.“He is dead and gone,” I said to myself.Again, it was a good thing I kept Syron by my side. I saw his usefulness when no one else did, and now, he was working for just me.While I found my way to the Structure, I detoured.I wanted time to think about my next course of action without any distractions and questions, especially coming from Syron. He always meant good because he was downright loyal, but he was always intercepting my thoughts and decisions. In a few weeks, the walls of the Organization would be weak and easily penetrable. All I would need to do was get in, but I didn’t want to just go about things the way I did with the other realms the last time.We were able to weaken their walls and get in, quite alright, but we weren’t able to fulfill the mission of the whole plan, which was to get Iron; he was too powerful an

  • The Return

IRON’S POVBlake and I got there in time to see that it was the Titans who had fled from the Organization. The Titans guarding the walls of the Organization held them tightly. Were they trying to sneak their way back into the Organization?“What is going on here?” I asked in my stiff and firm voice. They stopped and stared at Blake and me.“We caught them trying to sneak into the Organization,” one of the Titans answered.“No, we weren’t,” the other Titan responded.I recognized him as Givan. The other one, Norman, was already almost shaking with fear because he already knew that there was punishment for what they had done, but as for Givan, he didn’t look very scared, or even if he did, he was good at shielding it.“Then what were you trying to do?” I asked them.“We are not supposed to be here,” Norman said.I decided here and now that I didn’t want to have this conversation here. Whatever it was, they were here now.“To my chamber,” I stated firmly. And without saying more than tha

  • The Hardest Thing To Tell

I watched Blake train the Titans, and just like the other trainings that I had watched, it was excellent. I could attest to the fact that the Titans were improving greatly.Blake had a fight with two of them, and surprisingly, they had learned to swing their weapons and keep themselves from getting hurt.Although not well enough because they were fighting with Blake, but they were way better than they used to be, and that was really impressive. As I watched them, I had no regret in making Blake my right hand man.He poured himself and everything he had into the Titans. There was nothing he hid from them, and I knew that soon enough, they would be just as brave and strong.I clapped when Blake ended the training session.“One hour to get something into your stomachs and rest, and then we are back here to continue with the training!” Blake told them firmly. They nodded in agreement. Then they jogged off, but they were also excited that I had clapped for them. I sensed their sense of enc
