Lain tapped the golden evolution icon on his glowing screen while the truck raced down the wet highway. A bright green flash flooded the cabin as his system processed the thousand points."System evolving," Lain said, keeping his eyes on the road. The heavy truck smashed through the rusty chain-link fence of the military outpost, coming to a sliding stop inside the main yard. Lain cut the engine, grabbed a shotgun from the rack, and kicked his door open."Leo, watch the high walls!" Lain shouted, stepping into the mud. "Mavis, grab the medical kit and stay behind me!"Two infected soldiers wearing torn camouflage gear sprinted out of the open guardhouse, their mouths dripping thick black slime. Lain raised the shotgun and fired twice, blasting both creatures off their feet into the dirt.Leo pulled himself out of the truck, using his rifle for support as he scanned the watchtowers. "The perimeter wire is down on the north side!" Leo shouted, pointing his barrel toward the dark wood line.A pack of eight mutated hounds burst from the trees, their skin peeled back and their glowing red eyes locked on Mavis. "Mavis, back into the truck now!" Lain yelled, tapping his glowing system screen."Obsidian Behemoth, deploy and crush them!
Chapter 16: Counter Strike
"Fire!" the commander screamed, pulling his trigger first. A wave of blue plasma bolts rained down on Lain, tearing through the rain and light.The Obsidian Behemoth lunged in front of Lain, raising its massive arms to form a solid wall. The plasma shots slammed into its dark chest, leaving glowing red marks but failing to break through."Void Sovereign, take out the commander!" Lain shouted. The six-winged helper disappeared from the asphalt, leaving behind a sharp crack of displaced air.It reappeared behind the commander and drove its energy blade straight through his heavy chest armor. The commander dropped his plasma rifle and fell dead onto the wet highway."Supplies coming from the right!" Mavis yelled, leaning out the truck window to point her flashlight. A second squad of soldiers moved around the side of the truck, raising heavy grenade launchers.Leo leaned out from the passenger seat and fired three quick rifle shots into the lead guard's helmet. The mounted turrets roared as heavy bullets tore through the front rank of the incoming horde. The armored truck plowed straight into the crowd, throwing bodies into the air and crushing bone under its heavy tires."Keep driving!" Leo yelled from the back seat, holding onto the safety strap as the truck bounced wildly. "They are climbing onto the hood!"Lain slammed his foot harder on the gas pedal, ignoring the black blood splashing against the windshield. The rushing water hit Lain’s knees, nearly knocking him off his feet. He grabbed Leo’s arm and dragged him away from the burning electrical net that was still sparking."Get to the stairs!" Mavis screamed, pushing open a heavy emergency door that led upward. The water level was rising fast, bubbling with yellow foam from the broken tanks.Behind them, the Void Sovereign stood firm against the falling concrete blocks.
