Noah and Kara found a small closed café two streets away. The owner knew Kara from years ago and let them use the back room without asking questions. It was quiet. One table. Two chairs. A single window covered by a thin curtain.

Noah set the blue notebook on the table. His hands were still dirty from the alley. He opened it carefully.

Page after page listed names and payments. Most of them meant nothing to him. Then he found a short section near the middle.

Child host: Noah. Taken in by Brooks family at age three. Real parents: Daniel and Lena. Both deceased in arranged accident. System seed planted early. Overseer payment route: Hale family accounts.

Noah read the lines twice. His real parents had names now. Daniel and Lena. They had not left him. Someone had taken them away so the Brooks family could raise him like a product.

He closed his eyes for a second. The clean shirt still felt strange on his skin. The money in his pocket still felt like it belonged to someone else. Even with proof in front of him, part of him still heard Emma’s laugh and Victor’s voice calling him trash.

Kara watched him without speaking. When he opened his eyes she asked quietly, “Are you okay?”

“I don’t know,” Noah said. It was the truth.

Kara looked down at her hands. “I used to think knowing the truth would make everything clearer. It doesn’t. It just makes the anger sit heavier.”

Noah turned more pages. One note was written in different handwriting.

Blue notebook copy two is held by the Overseer’s son. He uses it to control smaller families. If the host ever gets free, destroy both copies.

Noah’s stomach tightened. Victor had a second notebook. That was why he was so sure of himself.

The system gave a short message.

Second notebook location possible: Hale family private club, top floor.

Risk level: high.

Noah showed the page to Kara. She read it and let out a slow breath.

“That’s the club where Victor spends most nights,” she said. “Security is tight. Cameras everywhere. If we go in without a plan, we don’t come out.”

Noah closed the notebook. “Then we make a plan.”

Before they could say more, Noah’s phone buzzed. A new photo from Ricky. This time it showed the front of the Brooks house. Mrs. Brooks stood on the steps with Brandon. Victor was beside them, smiling for the camera. The caption read:

The real family is ready to take back what’s theirs. The trash will learn his place tonight.

Ricky had added a short line under it: Can’t wait to see his face. Always cracks me up when the weak ones try to act strong.

Noah felt the old heat rise in his chest. Victor was not just talking anymore. He was standing with the Brooks family in public, turning Noah’s past into a show.

Kara saw the photo and her face hardened. “They’re trying to make you look like a thief who stole from the people who raised him. If that story sticks, no one will help you. Even the bank might freeze the account.”

Noah put the phone down. “Then we don’t let the story stick.”

He thought for a moment. The librarian, Mrs. Elena, had helped him because she lost someone to the Black Ledger. Maybe other people had lost family too. Maybe the notebook could do more than give him answers.

“I need to make a copy of the important pages,” Noah said. “If Victor has the second notebook, we need proof of our own.”

Kara nodded. She pulled a small portable scanner from her bag. “I keep this for nights like this. Ten minutes. Then we move.”

While the pages scanned, Noah stepped to the window and looked out through the thin curtain. The street was still quiet. For the first time in days he had a clear goal that was not just running. He had names for his parents. He had proof that Victor’s family had paid for his life. And he had one person who had chosen to stay with him when it would have been easier to leave.

Kara finished the scans and put the files on a clean memory stick. She handed it to Noah.

“Your copy,” she said. “I’ll keep one too. In case something happens to me.”

Noah looked at her. “Why are you still helping me?”

Kara was quiet for a few seconds. When she answered, her voice was soft but steady.

“Because I ran once and left someone behind. I still see his face. I don’t want to do that again. And because you didn’t leave the maid and her brother when it would have been safer. That matters.”

Noah did not know what to say. He only nodded.

They left the café through the back door. Noah kept the notebook and the memory stick close. The sun was higher now. The city felt more awake and more dangerous.

Halfway down the block a black car pulled up beside them. The window lowered. Victor sat in the back seat. Ricky was in the front, already cracking his knuckles.

Victor smiled like they were old friends. “Noah. You’ve been busy. Bank account. Blue notebook. Running around with a traitor. I’m almost impressed.”

Noah stopped walking. Kara stayed half a step behind him.

Victor continued, voice smooth and cold. “Here’s the deal. Give me the notebook and the bank card. Do that and the Brooks family will say you left on good terms. No more photos. No more stories about the trash who stole from them. You get to walk away clean.”

Ricky leaned out the window, still smiling. “Or we can do this the other way. Your choice, trash.”

Noah felt every eye on the street that might be watching. He thought about the letter from his parents. The names Daniel and Lena. The way the clean clothes still felt like they belonged to someone else.

He looked at Victor and kept his voice even.

“No.”

Victor’s smile did not change. “I thought you’d say that. Just remember—you had the chance.”

The car window slid up. The vehicle pulled away slowly, like they had all the time in the world.

Kara touched Noah’s arm. “They’re going to hit hard now. We need a safer place before night.”

Noah nodded. He could still hear Ricky’s knuckle cracks in his head. He could still see Mrs. Brooks standing on the steps with Victor like they owned the story of his life.

He held the backpack tighter.

He had the notebook. He had proof. He had a choice he had already made.

And for the first time, he was ready for whatever came next.

It was real, but it still felt strange, like it might disappear if he blinked too hard. The clean clothes still did not feel like his.“We can’t walk in the front,” Kara said. “They know both our faces by now.”Noah watched the side of the building. A service door opened for a delivery van. Two kitchen workers stepped out for a smoke.“There,” he said. “Service entrance. If we time it right, we can follow them back in.”Kara looked at him. “And then what? We just walk around until we find Victor’s notebook?”“We look for the top floor. The notebook said that’s where he keeps it. We get proof about my parents and we leave. Nothing else.”Kara was quiet for a moment. Her fingers tigh

Four thousand dollars in cash was all he had left. Start over somewhere else with what’s left.”Noah looked at her. “Is that what you want?”Kara was quiet for a long time. When she spoke, her voice was soft.“Part of me does. I’m tired of running. I’m tired of looking over my shoulder every hour. But if we le

Noah sat in the passenger seat and watched the city slide past the window. Kara drove fast but not wild. She checked the mirrors every few seconds. The cut above her eye had stopped bleeding, but it still looked fresh.“Where are we going?” Noah asked.“A place the Black Ledger doesn’t know about yet,” she said. “An old apartment above a closed laundry. I used it once when I first left them.”Noah kept one hand on the bank card in his pocket. Sixty-two thousand dollars. More money than he had ever touched. It still did not feel real. Part of him expected someone to snatch it away any second.Kara glanced at him. “You don’t trust me. That’s smart. I wouldn’t trust me either.”“You left the Black Ledger,” Noah said. “Why?”Kara was quiet for a long moment. When she spoke again her voice was lower.“They don’t just take the system. They take the person. I watched them do it to a boy two years younger than you. After they finished, he didn’t even know his own name. I couldn’t stay after t
