Ten minutes is all I have before the clock runs out and Lyra pays the price for my hesitation.
I stare at the small glass vial sitting inside the open black box. The blue liquid inside spins and bubbles, casting a strange glow against my face in the dark room. The note rests beside it, reminding me that Lyra is locked away in the upper tower while I am down here in the dirt.
I pick up the vial and pull the rubber stopper out with my teeth. The liquid smells sweet like winter fruit, but my instincts tell me it is something much more dangerous. It could be poison designed to wipe my memory for good, or it could be a performance upgrade meant to push my body past human limits for the next trial.
Either way, I do not have a choice.
I tilt my head back and swallow the glowing blue liquid in one long gulp.
It tastes cold, sliding down my throat like ice water before turning hot in my stomach. A sudden wave of heat shoots through my arms and legs, making every muscle in my body tighten up at once. I drop to my knees, gripping the edge of the metal box as a sharp pain spikes behind my eyes.
System upgrade initiated, a calm computer voice speaks directly inside my head. Subject Kian parameters updated. Speed increased by fifty percent. Reflexes optimized.
The pain vanishes as quickly as it started, leaving my body feeling lighter and stronger than ever before. My vision sharpens until I can see every tiny scratch on the metal walls across the room.
Before I can catch my breath, the wall in front of me splits open with a loud click, sliding apart to reveal a dark vertical shaft with a fast-moving elevator platform waiting inside.
I step onto the platform without wasting a second. The metal plate shoots upward at incredible speed, rushing past floor after floor of blinking lights, humming server racks, and empty testing chambers. The facility is massive, stretching up through the heart of the corporate tower like a giant mechanical beast.
After a minute of fast climbing, the platform stops abruptly with a heavy thud.
The security gate slides open, and I step out into a large, brightly lit observation deck.
Lyra is standing near the far glass window, tied securely to a heavy metal chair with thick plastic bands. Her hands are bound behind her back, and a thin silver collar is locked tightly around her neck. She looks tired, her hair messy and her clothes stained with dust from our fall, but her eyes are wide and awake as she sees me walk into the room.
"Kian," she says, her voice tight with strain. "You actually drank it."
"Of course I did," I say, walking quickly across the room toward her. "I am not going to leave you here after everything we went through."
"You fool," Lyra replies, her voice dropping to a harsh warning. "Look at the console behind me."
I stop in my tracks and look at the wall behind the chair. A large holographic screen floats in the air, displaying a live video feed of the control room. Sitting in a leather chair behind a desk is a man in a crisp white suit, watching us through the glass with a calm, amused smile.
"Welcome to the upper level, Kian," the man says through the room speakers, his voice smooth and polite. "I am Director Vance. And I must say, your progress through Phase Two has been most entertaining."
My hands ball into tight fists. "Vance. You are the one who built the simulation. You are the one who trapped us in River City."
"We built a world to test human resilience," Vance replies, leaning back in his chair. "And you passed every test with flying colors. But every good game needs a final boss. And every hero needs to make a final choice."
Vance taps a button on his desk, and the silver collar around Lyra's neck begins to glow with a bright red light.
Lyra gasps, her head snapping back as her body goes rigid. She does not scream, but I can see the intense pain flashing in her eyes as the collar tightens against her skin.
"The collar is hooked up to a countdown timer," Vance explains, his tone remaining entirely relaxed. "It runs on the exact same schedule as your survival timer. When it reaches zero, the collar releases a high-voltage shock that will permanently wipe her brain functions."
"Let her go, Vance!" I shout, taking a step toward the glass window.
"I can let her go right now," Vance says smoothly, "on one condition. The exit pass for Phase Three only has room for one registered employee profile. You can take the pass, walk out that door behind you, and leave this facility as a free man with a new life. Or you can stay here, try to hack the security mainframe, and most likely die trying while she takes the fall."
I look at Lyra. She catches my eye, shaking her head slightly from side to side. Even now, trapped and helpless, her tactical mind is working, warning me not to trust the corporate head's words.
"Don't do it, Kian," Lyra manages to force out through clenched teeth. "It is another trap."
I look back at the screen where Vance is smiling, waiting for my answer. Then I look down at my hands, feeling the new strength pulsing through my veins from the blue vial.
"You think I care about your exit pass?" I ask, my voice cold and steady.
I turn away from the glass window, walk over to the main computer console beside Lyra's chair, and raise my fist. Before Vance can say another word, I smash my fist straight through the glass screen of the control panel, sending sparks flying everywhere as the entire system shorts out with a loud pop.

The System Crash
Sparks burst from the broken console, and the screen goes completely dark.Director Vance jumps up from his chair on the video feed as his face turns red with anger. The smooth and polite look he wore just a second ago vanishes instantly."You stupid fool!" Vance shouts through the dead speakers before the connection cuts out completely. "You have no idea what you just destroyed!"The silver collar around Lyra's neck stops glowing with that dangerous red light. With a soft click, the lock pops open and falls to the floor. Lyra coughs, shaking her head as she pulls herself upright against the metal chair. Her hands are still bound behind her back, so I rush forward, grab the thick plastic bands, and snap them apart with the new strength the blue vial gave me.She rubs her wrists, taking a deep breath of air before looking up at me with her sharp eyes."That was reckless, Kian," she says, though a tiny hint of respect shows in her voice. "Destroying

The Cage Test
The steel bars of the cage trap us in a cold, small space. Before I can react, Lyra swings the heavy energy rifle around, pressing the barrel hard against my chest. Her eyes are completely empty of the warmth we shared just moments ago. She is calculating every second, every move, and every option to ensure she is the one who walks out of this room alive."Do not make me do this, Kian," Lyra says, her voice steady and cold. "The exit pass only allows one biometric signature. If we stay in here, the gas will fill the cage in sixty seconds. One of us has to press the release override from the inside control box, and that means the other person stays behind."I look down at the energy rifle pointing at my heart. My hands are free, but my mind is spinning. I trusted her in the slums of River City. I trusted her when the

The Only Way Out
A red laser beam points straight at my chest from the barrel of the heavy gun.The armored guard in front of us does not say a word. He pulls the trigger without a second thought. A bolt of hot energy shoots across the hallway, missing my shoulder by inches and leaving a black scorch mark on the metal wall behind me."Move!" Lyra shouts, grabbing my arm and pulling me hard to the left.We dive behind a thick steel pillar just as another energy blast hits the ground where we were standing. Sparks fly everywhere, and the smell of burning metal fills the air. My heart beats fast against my ribs, but I do not have time to think about fear. The timer on my wrist keeps ticking down. We have less than twelve hours, and now we have armed guards trying to kill us before we even reach the first sector gate.
The New Rules
The roar of the wind stops the second I step past the threshold.I stand on a high metal balcony overlooking a massive, glowing city that stretches as far as my eyes can see. This place looks nothing like the dirty streets of River City. Towering glass skyscrapers pierce a purple sky, and bright neon ships fly between buildings on invisible highways. Alarms blare in the distance, and red warning lights pulse against the walls."Welcome to Phase Two, subject Kian," a flat, mechanical voice echoes from speakers mounted above the door. "Your survival timer has begun. You have twelve hours to reach the central sector before the sector locks down permanently."I look down at my wrist. A bright red number glows on my skin: 11:59:59. It counts down second by second."Kian!"I spin around at the sound of that familiar voice.Lyra stands on a lower platform across a wide gap, wearing the same gray uniform as me. Her hair is messy, and her eyes are wide with panic. She looks around frantically,
