Sparks burst from the broken console, and the screen goes completely dark.
Director Vance jumps up from his chair on the video feed as his face turns red with anger. The smooth and polite look he wore just a second ago vanishes instantly.
"You stupid fool!" Vance shouts through the dead speakers before the connection cuts out completely. "You have no idea what you just destroyed!"
The silver collar around Lyra's neck stops glowing with that dangerous red light. With a soft click, the lock pops open and falls to the floor. Lyra coughs, shaking her head as she pulls herself upright against the metal chair. Her hands are still bound behind her back, so I rush forward, grab the thick plastic bands, and snap them apart with the new strength the blue vial gave me.
She rubs her wrists, taking a deep breath of air before looking up at me with her sharp eyes.
"That was reckless, Kian," she says, though a tiny hint of respect shows in her voice. "Destroying his console cut off the video feed, but it also triggered the building's emergency lockdown."
Right as she speaks, loud alarms begin to wail across the entire tower. Flashing red warning lights fill the observation deck, and the heavy metal doors on both sides of the room slide shut with a loud crash.
"We are trapped," I say, looking around the room.
"Not yet," Lyra replies, standing up quickly. She walks over to the smoking remains of the console I broke and pulls a loose wire from the panel. She taps the exposed wires against the backup battery box. "The central tower mainframe is connected to this floor. If I can rewrite the security code, we can unlock the main elevator and head straight to the top floor where Vance is hiding."
"Do it fast," I tell her, keeping my eyes on the sealed doors. "We do not have much time before security guards arrive."
While Lyra works on the wires with quick, steady fingers, I stand guard by the door. The enhanced speed and reflexes from the blue vial make my senses sharp. I can hear the heavy footsteps of guards running up the metal stairs outside, getting closer by the second.
"Almost done," Lyra says, her forehead damp with sweat.
The computer terminal suddenly flashes green instead of red. The heavy sealed doors slide open just an inch, letting a stream of cool air rush into the room.
"Got it," Lyra says, dropping the wire. "Let's move."
We slip through the narrow gap in the door just as a squad of armed guards bursts into the observation deck from the opposite side. We run down the dark hallway, following the flashing green exit signs toward the central elevator shaft.
The air grows colder the higher we go. This facility is not just a laboratory for testing human behavior; it is a massive control center that manages thousands of virtual worlds across the globe. Every person living in those digital cities thinks their life is real, just like I did in River City.
We reach the heavy glass doors of the top floor penthouse. A large sign on the wall reads: DIRECTOR OFFICE - RESTRICTED ACCESS.
I grab the handle of the glass door and pull, but it does not move. It is locked by a biometric security scanner next to the frame.
"Step aside," Lyra says, stepping up to the glass panel.
Instead of using a key or a code, she pulls a small circuit chip from the console wire she brought with her and plugs it directly into the emergency port below the scanner. The screen flickers, displaying a list of administrative profiles.
"Vance is not the only one with high-level access," Lyra says with a cold smile. "My original programming included administrator privileges before they wiped my memory in Phase One."
The screen flashes green, and the heavy glass door unlocks with a sharp snap, swinging open slowly.
We walk into the penthouse office. It is a massive, quiet room with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the endless neon city below. A sleek desk sits in the center of the room, but Director Vance is not sitting behind it.
Instead, Vance stands by the far window, holding a small silver remote control in his hand. He turns around to face us, and this time, he is not smiling at all. His eyes are cold and furious.
"You two are far more trouble than you are worth," Vance says quietly. "You broke out of the simulation, you survived the cage test, and you hacked my security grid."
"Your little game is over, Vance," I say, taking a step toward him with my fists clenched. "Turn off the system and let everyone in the lower sectors go."
Vance lets out a dry, humorless laugh. "Let them go? Kian, those people do not exist in the real world. They are data streams. Algorithms designed to populate our new empire. And you two are just test subjects."
"We are human beings," Lyra says, stepping up beside me, her voice sharp as glass. "And we are going to burn this entire tower to the ground."
Vance shakes his head slowly, his thumb resting over the red button on the silver remote in his hand.
"You can try," Vance says. "But before you take another step, you should know that the self-destruct sequence for the entire facility is already running. And you only have three minutes to decide whether you want to die here as heroes, or take the final exit pass and leave this world behind forever."
Before I can answer, the floor beneath our feet begins to tremble violently, and the glass windows behind Vance crack down the middle with a deafening sound.

The Blue Vial
Ten minutes is all I have before the clock runs out and Lyra pays the price for my hesitation.I stare at the small glass vial sitting inside the open black box. The blue liquid inside spins and bubbles, casting a strange glow against my face in the dark room. The note rests beside it, reminding me that Lyra is locked away in the upper tower while I am down here in the dirt.I pick up the vial and pull the rubber stopper out with my teeth. The liquid smells sweet like winter fruit, but my instincts tell me it is something much more dangerous. It could be poison designed to wipe my memory for good, or it could be a performance upgrade meant to push my body past human limits for the next trial.Either way, I do not have a choice.I tilt my head back and swallow the glowing
The Cage Test
The steel bars of the cage trap us in a cold, small space. Before I can react, Lyra swings the heavy energy rifle around, pressing the barrel hard against my chest. Her eyes are completely empty of the warmth we shared just moments ago. She is calculating every second, every move, and every option to ensure she is the one who walks out of this room alive."Do not make me do this, Kian," Lyra says, her voice steady and cold. "The exit pass only allows one biometric signature. If we stay in here, the gas will fill the cage in sixty seconds. One of us has to press the release override from the inside control box, and that means the other person stays behind."I look down at the energy rifle pointing at my heart. My hands are free, but my mind is spinning. I trusted her in the slums of River City. I trusted her when the

The Only Way Out
A red laser beam points straight at my chest from the barrel of the heavy gun.The armored guard in front of us does not say a word. He pulls the trigger without a second thought. A bolt of hot energy shoots across the hallway, missing my shoulder by inches and leaving a black scorch mark on the metal wall behind me."Move!" Lyra shouts, grabbing my arm and pulling me hard to the left.We dive behind a thick steel pillar just as another energy blast hits the ground where we were standing. Sparks fly everywhere, and the smell of burning metal fills the air. My heart beats fast against my ribs, but I do not have time to think about fear. The timer on my wrist keeps ticking down. We have less than twelve hours, and now we have armed guards trying to kill us before we even reach the first sector gate.
The New Rules
The roar of the wind stops the second I step past the threshold.I stand on a high metal balcony overlooking a massive, glowing city that stretches as far as my eyes can see. This place looks nothing like the dirty streets of River City. Towering glass skyscrapers pierce a purple sky, and bright neon ships fly between buildings on invisible highways. Alarms blare in the distance, and red warning lights pulse against the walls."Welcome to Phase Two, subject Kian," a flat, mechanical voice echoes from speakers mounted above the door. "Your survival timer has begun. You have twelve hours to reach the central sector before the sector locks down permanently."I look down at my wrist. A bright red number glows on my skin: 11:59:59. It counts down second by second."Kian!"I spin around at the sound of that familiar voice.Lyra stands on a lower platform across a wide gap, wearing the same gray uniform as me. Her hair is messy, and her eyes are wide with panic. She looks around frantically,
