Certainty

“Oh my God!” Arya muttered, her chest tightening as she stared with wide eyes.

If she had her way, maybe she would have asked the Event Manager to wait for a while, so that she could get a grip on herself.

No one knew the reason why Ethan was about to announce the selected companies. No one except Brian.

The Event Manager held onto the tablet that had always been in his possession, flanked by two very important executives in Prime Tech.

One of them was Owen Adkins, the Deputy Manager.

A man who seemed unsymbolic because he had been sidelined by Charles Sterling.

Yet some of those who knew how intelligent he was were aware that he was the brain behind some of the major projects that had been carried out in recent times.

Dressed in a very simple but fitted black suit, he stood at Ethan’s right side, his expression plain and unreadable.

Ethan turned to him, and at his approval, he continued.

“I have here with me, the list of the companies that have been carefully selected for this multibillion-dollar project…” He paused, lifting an eyebrow as he looked up.

No one was smiling, not even Romeo who seemed certain.

Ethan scrolled through the screen for a while, and then he moved his head closer to the microphone.

“We have just three companies here, but the CEO of Prime Tech has decided in his magnanimity to add a fast-rising company as a way of support and encouragement.”

A round of applause erupted from several corners, heads nodding in approval.

“But that shall be an anonymous selection. The company shall be informed secretly at the end of this event.”

“The CEO must be a very kind person.” A young man said aloud, drawing a little attention to himself.

No one was certain of what he said, especially since there was no clue who the CEO of Prime Tech was.

The speculations didn’t seem like they were ever going to stop anytime soon.

Ethan waited patiently for silence to return before he lifted the tablet to his face.

Arya blew hot air, squeezing Brian’s hand tightly as though she was attempting to crush her nervousness.

Brian looked at her with a soft smile, and then he exhaled softly.

“She worries too much.” He whispered. Only to his hearing.

“The first but not the least company I have here…” Ethan made sure his voice was loud enough, reverberating from the expensive speakers mounted at several corners of the large room.

He blinked twice, his smile enduring as he moved his pupils slowly.

“Zenith Global!” He announced, and a loud gasp followed.

The CEO of the company sprang to his feet and danced to no audible music.

It took his companions a while before they could get him to return to his seat.

“I can’t believe this! My company has just been saved from bankruptcy!” He couldn't stop expressing his joy as he nodded to the congratulatory gestures he received from those who were happy for him.

The rest just stared in shock, their dissatisfaction visible across their veins.

Some went as far as whispering how they felt he didn’t deserve to be chosen for that kind of project.

“A whopping one hundred billion dollars thrown to a third-tier company. What does he know he wants to use the money for?” Someone seemed like she couldn’t hold her annoyance, and that person was Pearl.

She hissed several times, glaring at the CEO of Zenith Global.

“He doesn’t deserve this, Romeo. Someone better could have been given that opportunity.”

“I know…” Romeo scowled at the joyous CEO who didn’t even notice their hatred.

“But that shouldn’t be any of our bother. After all, we are going to be the first and second on the list.”

“I know, right?” Pearl returned her gaze to Romeo, and then she sighed heavily.

“I can’t wait to look that bitch in the face and tell her that she is a failure.” She sniggered at the thought of her intended action, mockery etched all over her face as she turned to look at Arya.

Their eyes met and she sneered at her.

Arya looked away, returning her eyes to the stage.

It was time for Ethan to announce the second company that was selected, silence taking over once again.

“No one is going to expect the second company that was selected for this huge project.” He stated, causing a tiny whisper to rise from a particular angle.

But everyone returned to silence the moment they noticed that he was ready to speak.

“The Second Company on this list that will receive the sum of One hundred and fifty billion dollars is…”

Ethan paused, scanning as though he was looking for the representative of the company he was about to mention.

His eyes moved to Pearl, his smile bright and lingering.

“I think he is about to call my company, Romeo!” Pearl chuckled, her heartbeat increasing.

“Yes!” She nodded when she saw that Ethan was still staring.

“I told you so,” Romeo remarked proudly, a smug smile taking over his visage.

“I will be next.” He said with a low but overbearing tone, eyes sparking with excitement.

“Everyone! City Global is number two on the list.” Pearl announced to everyone who cared to listen to her.

They saw her seated with the famous Romeo Jones, and they knew that the possibilities were very high.

“It’s all over, guys…” A young lady announced to her tablemates, then a sigh of despair left her.

“If City Global is announced second, then Apex Ventures will be top on the list.”

  • Admiration Withdrawn

“I am sorry. I can’t do that.” Winnie was quick to respond, then a snort followed.“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. My boss is busy at the moment. He won’t be able to see you.”“But you just told me a while ago that he was less busy,” Brian argued, his face attacked by patches of frustration. “That was before I realized that he was too busy to see someone as unimportant as you.” Winnie didn’t hide her disdain. She looked at Brian like he was a piece of rag, glaring from the crown of his head, down to the sole of his shoes. It didn’t matter if he looked presentable or not, his name was a representation of failure and a man who had acted foolishly. Brian swallowed everything in good faith. After all, he was the one who brought everything upon himself. No one forced him to sell his company, not even to the highest bidder, but to the first person who offered to purchase it for a few million dollars. “I guess I deserve that.” He took a deep breath, yet his determination

  • Greeenfield Co

Brian stood in front of the tall building, both regret and annoyance simmering inside him. The company had been renamed from SilverLine Tech to Greenfield Co after he sold it in a desperate attempt to please his ex-wife. “All for nothing…” He muttered in despair, a heavy sigh escaping his lungs. Then he began to march toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last. For some reason, the guards at the casement door didn’t stop him, probably because he was dressed differently- like a businessman or important personnel. They didn’t even recognize him, not even a glimpse of who he was. Brian continued moving slowly until he arrived at the reception. The young lady seated in front of the large screen was blowing hard on ballooned gum, biting hard even when she had sucked all the juice. Her fingers were clicking hard on the keyboard, but she had to stop when she saw Brian approaching. “Hello, Sir!” She said with a smile, her eyes flashing with pure admiration.

  • Sharp Mouth

“You have to believe it, Arya. I just did.” Brian held onto his smile, and then he took a deep breath.“But why?” Arya couldn’t let it go, the intense desire to know the truth. “Let’s just say that I have finally found a purpose.” “Oh…” Arya pretended to be satisfied by Brian’s response for the second time, nodding with a deadpan expression.“I am very sorry that you were not invited to the celebration. But I am grateful that you did a great job. I will send you the balance once I am settled.” Brian chuckled softly, causing Arya’s expression to drop. The lady was already asking why he was laughing with her eyes. “Don’t worry, Arya. You can give me the balance. At the party.”“You are coming?” Arya inquired with arched brows, staring even when Brian nodded.“Yes. And I will be coming with some flowers for my future wife.” “But…” “You don’t have to say anything, Arya.” Brian stopped her before she could continue with her slippery voice, still holding onto his confident

  • Uninvited

Arya shook her head frantically, but the truth was the truth. It was hanging in the air like their breath, soaring all around her.“He is a nobody, Grandpa. Brian is my husband, and getting this deal wouldn’t have been possible without him.” “No…” Don Pedro retorted with a cold tone, pupils contrasted in annoyance.“You will bring no shame to the Kirk family, child…” He took a deep breath, then he breathed annoyance. “This…” He pointed at Brian, in search of the right noun to use. “This leech will certainly not be my grandson-in-law. You had better divorce him now that it is early.” “I agree…” Travis nodded, smiling as though he was going to get a reward for it. “I am sure that he would want to reap where he did not sow. That’s what wretched men like him do.” Brian slowly pulled down his right hand, returning it to his side.He inhaled sharply, ignoring Travis and turning to the old man. “I think you are mistaken, Mr. Kirk. I am not a nobody, I am…”“I don’t care.”

  • The Kirks

“Who are you talking about?” Brian asked with a soft tone, but when he realized that he wasn’t going to get a response by just asking, he decided to turn toward the same direction Arya was looking. He saw them. An old man probably in his early seventies, a young man in his early thirties, and six bodyguards who were bouncing behind them. The two men in front were dressed in the same tuxedos, looking like the old and young versions of each other. From the way people stared and pointed, Brian could already tell who they were. “Let me guess…” He slowly returned his gaze to Arya, catching sight of the worry on her face.“That’s your Grandpa, and your brother.”“You guessed right.” Arya let out a heavy sigh, yet she couldn’t attain relief.“I wonder what they are doing here, Brian. It’s been barely thirty minutes since the close of the event.” Arya kept on staring, but she couldn’t look either of the two men in the eyes. She looked above them, but that didn’t look like it was

  • The Response

“Hello.” Arya waved at the couple, a smirk plastered across her face. Pearl snorted, disgruntlement etched on her face. “Have you come to make fun of us?”“No! Not at all!” Arya shook her head, yet she refused to discard her wry smile. “Why would I do such a thing?” She asked silently, moving her eyes from Pearl to Romeo, and back to Pearl. “As a matter of fact, I have come to sympathize with both of you. Not every day do we get to see people get so disappointed and yet stand courageous like you.” She tutted continuously, shaking her head with a palpable sneer. Her words stung the couple as though a hive of bees had attacked them, their temper rising as they scowled at her. “What did you do to make Mr. Adkins put your name on the list?” Romeo asked, but Pearl interrupted before Arya could decide if she was going to respond or not. “Did you sleep with him?” Her voice was cold, her glaring eyes demanding an immediate response, refusing to even blink. Arya scoffed, and
