Rounds of Dismay

“How about the slot for the uprising company?” One of the lady’s friends chipped in, returning just a spark of the light that was shining hopefully inside them,

“I don’t know. We might get lucky.” The lady muttered, her words struggling not to be slippery.

Ethan didn’t make it any easier for some of the guests who were hoping to be chosen for the project.

His momentary pauses appeared like he was testing their patience or trying to have a little fun.

Whatever the case was, many people were not pleased with him.

“I am sorry.” He apologized when he saw the clamoring frowns, but there was nothing to prove that he was not going to repeat what he did.

“The second on my list is…” He repeated, eyes on the screen of the tablet he held with both hands.

The Deputy Manager and the other executive were staring like they hadn’t seen the names on the screen, awaiting the announcement.

“Come on!” Pearl couldn’t wait, both hands covering her mouth as she prepared to scream.

She had already thought about her reaction; how she was going to walk up to Arya and jeer at her for not making it on the list.

Ethan looked at her one more time, causing her to lean forward, her elbows resting on the table.

“Pinnacle Holdings!”

No one clapped, not even a tiny bit.

Eyes rolled from one corner to the other, and jaws dropped drastically.

“Pinnacle Holdings? Is that even the name of a company?” A man in a white suit asked, scouring his head in search of anyone who was going to claim ownership of the selection.

But there was just silence, enough to cause the sound of a pin drop to echo.

Pearl’s face had turned sour, and she shifted her face to Romeo, in search of an explanation.

Her eyes were wide, her lips separated even when she knew not what to say.

Romeo was stunned as well, his body becoming hot gradually even with the cool nature of the hall.

“It can’t be!” He muttered loudly, his throat becoming dry as he stared.

“Something must have gone wrong.” He looked in search of Charles Sterling, but there was no sign of the Manager.

He should have read the signs. He should have known that something was wrong when he saw Ethan with the list instead of his own man.

“Say something, Romeo! Why was another company mentioned and not City Global?!” Pearl finally found her voice, looking Romeo in the eyes with panic glittering in hers.

“I don’t know.” Romeo’s voice dropped, his countenance a sign that he was even afraid for his own sake.

“I am sure there must have been some error. Mr. Sterling promised us two slots in that deal.” His words were meant to restore his confidence, but they couldn’t even be a consolation.

Arya was staring at them from their table, but she couldn’t even laugh at Pearl.

She had her own problem to think of, her heart falling deep into her stomach.

“If City Global was not chosen, then there is no way Link Tech will be chosen, Brian. They must have decided to go for Companies that no one thinks of.”

“You can’t be too sure.” Brian refused to let go of his smile, still staring at her.

“I think your company will be mentioned next, Arya. Don’t give up so easily.”

Arya scoffed, shaking her head slowly.

“You are just trying to make me feel better, Brian. There is no way Prime Tech will pick me over Romeo Jones. Do you know how many major projects Apex Ventures has carried out in the past few months?”

“Six,” Brian said confidently, and Arya nodded.

“How did you know?”

“I worked there, remember? Besides, I helped them with four of them.” Brian retained his smile even when he saw the disbelief in Arya’s eyes.

“I doubt if you know anything about Tech, Brian. You were just a Chief Security Officer in that company.”

“You never can tell, Arya. You never can tell…”

Brian exhibited a kind of confidence that was impossible to ignore.

It was not boastful, yet it was all over the place.

“Don’t worry, Arya. Just prepare yourself to share the good news with your Grandfather.”

Arya nodded, and with a forlorn expression, she returned her gaze to the stage.

Ethan was ready to call out the number one name on the list, eyes returning to his screen.

He cleared his throat, ushering in a dead silence while all eyes moved back to him.

“The number one company on this list, and the lead of the Power Line Project is…”

He paused just as everyone had expected, then he slowly lifted his head to look at Romeo.

“Of course, it should be me. There is no other company qualified for that position.” His shoulder pads went higher, and he overlooked Pearl’s annoyance while he waited for the name of his company to be mentioned.

Ethan chuckled softly while he was still staring at him, and then he returned his eyes to the screen, but only for a brief moment.

He looked at Romeo again, nodding as though he was telling him something.

“Say it already, Ethan! Come on!” Romeo was running out of patience, cracking his knuckles as it was something he did each time he was nervous.

He was certain of his thought, but not until Ethan looked away, staring at someone else.

Romeo’s smile vanished like smoke, and he was forced to look to his left slowly.

“Why is he staring at Arya Kirk?” He muttered, ignoring the thought that crawled into his mind.

  • Admiration Withdrawn

“I am sorry. I can’t do that.” Winnie was quick to respond, then a snort followed.“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. My boss is busy at the moment. He won’t be able to see you.”“But you just told me a while ago that he was less busy,” Brian argued, his face attacked by patches of frustration. “That was before I realized that he was too busy to see someone as unimportant as you.” Winnie didn’t hide her disdain. She looked at Brian like he was a piece of rag, glaring from the crown of his head, down to the sole of his shoes. It didn’t matter if he looked presentable or not, his name was a representation of failure and a man who had acted foolishly. Brian swallowed everything in good faith. After all, he was the one who brought everything upon himself. No one forced him to sell his company, not even to the highest bidder, but to the first person who offered to purchase it for a few million dollars. “I guess I deserve that.” He took a deep breath, yet his determination

  • Greeenfield Co

Brian stood in front of the tall building, both regret and annoyance simmering inside him. The company had been renamed from SilverLine Tech to Greenfield Co after he sold it in a desperate attempt to please his ex-wife. “All for nothing…” He muttered in despair, a heavy sigh escaping his lungs. Then he began to march toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last. For some reason, the guards at the casement door didn’t stop him, probably because he was dressed differently- like a businessman or important personnel. They didn’t even recognize him, not even a glimpse of who he was. Brian continued moving slowly until he arrived at the reception. The young lady seated in front of the large screen was blowing hard on ballooned gum, biting hard even when she had sucked all the juice. Her fingers were clicking hard on the keyboard, but she had to stop when she saw Brian approaching. “Hello, Sir!” She said with a smile, her eyes flashing with pure admiration.

  • Sharp Mouth

“You have to believe it, Arya. I just did.” Brian held onto his smile, and then he took a deep breath.“But why?” Arya couldn’t let it go, the intense desire to know the truth. “Let’s just say that I have finally found a purpose.” “Oh…” Arya pretended to be satisfied by Brian’s response for the second time, nodding with a deadpan expression.“I am very sorry that you were not invited to the celebration. But I am grateful that you did a great job. I will send you the balance once I am settled.” Brian chuckled softly, causing Arya’s expression to drop. The lady was already asking why he was laughing with her eyes. “Don’t worry, Arya. You can give me the balance. At the party.”“You are coming?” Arya inquired with arched brows, staring even when Brian nodded.“Yes. And I will be coming with some flowers for my future wife.” “But…” “You don’t have to say anything, Arya.” Brian stopped her before she could continue with her slippery voice, still holding onto his confident

  • Uninvited

Arya shook her head frantically, but the truth was the truth. It was hanging in the air like their breath, soaring all around her.“He is a nobody, Grandpa. Brian is my husband, and getting this deal wouldn’t have been possible without him.” “No…” Don Pedro retorted with a cold tone, pupils contrasted in annoyance.“You will bring no shame to the Kirk family, child…” He took a deep breath, then he breathed annoyance. “This…” He pointed at Brian, in search of the right noun to use. “This leech will certainly not be my grandson-in-law. You had better divorce him now that it is early.” “I agree…” Travis nodded, smiling as though he was going to get a reward for it. “I am sure that he would want to reap where he did not sow. That’s what wretched men like him do.” Brian slowly pulled down his right hand, returning it to his side.He inhaled sharply, ignoring Travis and turning to the old man. “I think you are mistaken, Mr. Kirk. I am not a nobody, I am…”“I don’t care.”

  • The Kirks

“Who are you talking about?” Brian asked with a soft tone, but when he realized that he wasn’t going to get a response by just asking, he decided to turn toward the same direction Arya was looking. He saw them. An old man probably in his early seventies, a young man in his early thirties, and six bodyguards who were bouncing behind them. The two men in front were dressed in the same tuxedos, looking like the old and young versions of each other. From the way people stared and pointed, Brian could already tell who they were. “Let me guess…” He slowly returned his gaze to Arya, catching sight of the worry on her face.“That’s your Grandpa, and your brother.”“You guessed right.” Arya let out a heavy sigh, yet she couldn’t attain relief.“I wonder what they are doing here, Brian. It’s been barely thirty minutes since the close of the event.” Arya kept on staring, but she couldn’t look either of the two men in the eyes. She looked above them, but that didn’t look like it was

  • The Response

“Hello.” Arya waved at the couple, a smirk plastered across her face. Pearl snorted, disgruntlement etched on her face. “Have you come to make fun of us?”“No! Not at all!” Arya shook her head, yet she refused to discard her wry smile. “Why would I do such a thing?” She asked silently, moving her eyes from Pearl to Romeo, and back to Pearl. “As a matter of fact, I have come to sympathize with both of you. Not every day do we get to see people get so disappointed and yet stand courageous like you.” She tutted continuously, shaking her head with a palpable sneer. Her words stung the couple as though a hive of bees had attacked them, their temper rising as they scowled at her. “What did you do to make Mr. Adkins put your name on the list?” Romeo asked, but Pearl interrupted before Arya could decide if she was going to respond or not. “Did you sleep with him?” Her voice was cold, her glaring eyes demanding an immediate response, refusing to even blink. Arya scoffed, and
