Brian stopped, turning to face the old Concierge.
“What did you just say?” He demanded an immediate response, looking the old man in the eyes. “Your Grandfather, Master Brian. He is dying…” Diego repeated, and then he took a deep breath. Sadness drained his expression, lining up along the veins on his forehead. “He had a heart attack last night. The Doctors said he barely has up to a year to live.” “I hope this is not a prank…” Brian snarled, his eyes sounding a warning. “No, Master Brian…” Diego shook his head, taking a deep breath. “Lord Regal wants to spend the remaining days of his life making up for all the mistakes he made. He knows your father was innocent, and wants to show you how truly sorry he is.” The words melted Brian’s heart, but the pain was still intact. Twenty years earlier, Brian’s father was framed for diverting the company funds by his cousins and uncles. He pleaded not guilty, but his Father, Ambrose Regal believed the majority. Brian’s parents were ousted and stripped of all their belongings. The same night they were asked to leave, his parents were assassinated after a combined effort by his father’s cousins and some of his rivals. Brian was just ten, but he managed to escape. “Run, Brian! Run, my son!” He could still hear the frail voice of his mother, urging him to escape before the gunshots that killed her echoed across the woods. His Grandfather had been trying all he could to get Brian to come reclaim all his father owned, but the pain of losing them made him stay away for a while. That still didn’t stop the old man from sending the Concierge to look after Brian and send daily reports about his activities to him. In less than a decade, Lord Regal was still betrayed by the same set of people, causing him to endure pain and remorse at the same time. Brian swore to avenge the death of his parents and make the world know his father was innocent. Tears welled up in his eyes again, but he managed to hold them back. An opportunity had presented itself, and he was going to take it. He sighed heavily, turning to face Diego. “Tell Grandpa I will be home in a few days.” He stated, causing the old man to chuckle softly. “Wonderful news!” Diego held onto his smile, and then he sighed in relief. “I am sure Lord Regal will be thrilled to hear this!” “I hope so…” Brian retorted casually, and then he got into the car and zoomed off. The old man watched the car drift into the road, and after a while, he returned to his own car, taking out his phone from his pocket. “He has agreed to come back. Make sure there are no mistakes…” He pocketed the phone as soon as he was done talking and signaled to the driver at once. Meanwhile, Brian was on his way to Berry Villa- The Stuttgart estate. That was the last place he wanted to be, but he had something to pick up. He blinked his eyes severally, attempting to get rid of the flashes of the image of Pearl riding another man like a horse, but it seemed it had become a part of his mind. “She didn’t even let me touch her.” He muttered, fury rimming inside him. “I don’t think I am ready to have children yet, Brian…” She gave the same excuse, insisting that she wanted to build her career and concentrate on rebuilding her family business. On his way, his car stopped, and he already knew what the problem was. As soon as he opened the engine lid, he grabbed a stone and struck the battery plugs until they sparked with electricity, then he continued his ride. He walked slowly into the mansion, and then to the bedroom he shared with Pearl. By the corner, close to the cabinet was the mat where he usually slept. “I have been a fool…” Brian thought, shaking his head while he moved to the wardrobe. He grabbed his small brown luggage, and then the picture of his parents- the only memory he had of them and he cherished it more than any treasure. After he had exhaled sharply, he turned to walk away only to see Pearl’s mother standing behind him. “What are you doing here?!” Lady Bianca glared at him, disdain sparking in her eyes. “I thought my daughter already made it clear that she wants nothing to do with you.” She waited, but the only response she could get was a huff from Brian. She watched him advance toward her, his eyes on the door. “Stop right there!” She blocked the way, spreading her arms. “I need to make sure that you didn’t steal anything. Let me have that!” She snatched the brown bag from Brian and hurled everything to the ground. The hairbrush, the three pairs of underwear, a diary, and the pair of shorts fell. Lady Bianca scattered them with her legs only she was satisfied. She tossed the brown bag on the ground and returned her gaze to Brian. “My daughter deserves to be with a better man, someone like Romeo Jones. He has promised to help us get a hold of the Power Line Project. That’s going to make us hundreds of millions.” She sighed in delight, but her hatred for Brian was still palpable. “Make sure you never come back to this place again! I will call the cops on you if I ever see you around our perimeter!” Brian scoffed, but before he could consider breaking his silence, someone else walked in. It was Nelly, Pearl’s cousin. It was hard to tell who was more arrogant and heartless between the two of them. Little wonder why they looked so much like twins. “Hello, Leech!” She cursed in her usual language, rolling her eyes at Brian. “I thought you said we were no longer going to see him again, Aunt Bianca…” She turned to Lady Bianca who nodded slowly. “I guess he is here to take his little belongings.” She rolled her eyes at Brian, and then she scoffed. Brian held onto the picture with both hands, refusing to utter even a word. Pearl joined the party, walking slowly into the room. Her eyes sparked when she saw Brian, and she angrily stomped her feet before marching toward him. “What have you come here to do, you fool?! I thought I made it clear that we are done!”Latest Chapter
Admiration Withdrawn
“I am sorry. I can’t do that.” Winnie was quick to respond, then a snort followed.“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. My boss is busy at the moment. He won’t be able to see you.”“But you just told me a while ago that he was less busy,” Brian argued, his face attacked by patches of frustration. “That was before I realized that he was too busy to see someone as unimportant as you.” Winnie didn’t hide her disdain. She looked at Brian like he was a piece of rag, glaring from the crown of his head, down to the sole of his shoes. It didn’t matter if he looked presentable or not, his name was a representation of failure and a man who had acted foolishly. Brian swallowed everything in good faith. After all, he was the one who brought everything upon himself. No one forced him to sell his company, not even to the highest bidder, but to the first person who offered to purchase it for a few million dollars. “I guess I deserve that.” He took a deep breath, yet his determination
Greeenfield Co
Brian stood in front of the tall building, both regret and annoyance simmering inside him. The company had been renamed from SilverLine Tech to Greenfield Co after he sold it in a desperate attempt to please his ex-wife. “All for nothing…” He muttered in despair, a heavy sigh escaping his lungs. Then he began to march toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last. For some reason, the guards at the casement door didn’t stop him, probably because he was dressed differently- like a businessman or important personnel. They didn’t even recognize him, not even a glimpse of who he was. Brian continued moving slowly until he arrived at the reception. The young lady seated in front of the large screen was blowing hard on ballooned gum, biting hard even when she had sucked all the juice. Her fingers were clicking hard on the keyboard, but she had to stop when she saw Brian approaching. “Hello, Sir!” She said with a smile, her eyes flashing with pure admiration.
Sharp Mouth
“You have to believe it, Arya. I just did.” Brian held onto his smile, and then he took a deep breath.“But why?” Arya couldn’t let it go, the intense desire to know the truth. “Let’s just say that I have finally found a purpose.” “Oh…” Arya pretended to be satisfied by Brian’s response for the second time, nodding with a deadpan expression.“I am very sorry that you were not invited to the celebration. But I am grateful that you did a great job. I will send you the balance once I am settled.” Brian chuckled softly, causing Arya’s expression to drop. The lady was already asking why he was laughing with her eyes. “Don’t worry, Arya. You can give me the balance. At the party.”“You are coming?” Arya inquired with arched brows, staring even when Brian nodded.“Yes. And I will be coming with some flowers for my future wife.” “But…” “You don’t have to say anything, Arya.” Brian stopped her before she could continue with her slippery voice, still holding onto his confident
Uninvited
Arya shook her head frantically, but the truth was the truth. It was hanging in the air like their breath, soaring all around her.“He is a nobody, Grandpa. Brian is my husband, and getting this deal wouldn’t have been possible without him.” “No…” Don Pedro retorted with a cold tone, pupils contrasted in annoyance.“You will bring no shame to the Kirk family, child…” He took a deep breath, then he breathed annoyance. “This…” He pointed at Brian, in search of the right noun to use. “This leech will certainly not be my grandson-in-law. You had better divorce him now that it is early.” “I agree…” Travis nodded, smiling as though he was going to get a reward for it. “I am sure that he would want to reap where he did not sow. That’s what wretched men like him do.” Brian slowly pulled down his right hand, returning it to his side.He inhaled sharply, ignoring Travis and turning to the old man. “I think you are mistaken, Mr. Kirk. I am not a nobody, I am…”“I don’t care.”
The Kirks
“Who are you talking about?” Brian asked with a soft tone, but when he realized that he wasn’t going to get a response by just asking, he decided to turn toward the same direction Arya was looking. He saw them. An old man probably in his early seventies, a young man in his early thirties, and six bodyguards who were bouncing behind them. The two men in front were dressed in the same tuxedos, looking like the old and young versions of each other. From the way people stared and pointed, Brian could already tell who they were. “Let me guess…” He slowly returned his gaze to Arya, catching sight of the worry on her face.“That’s your Grandpa, and your brother.”“You guessed right.” Arya let out a heavy sigh, yet she couldn’t attain relief.“I wonder what they are doing here, Brian. It’s been barely thirty minutes since the close of the event.” Arya kept on staring, but she couldn’t look either of the two men in the eyes. She looked above them, but that didn’t look like it was
The Response
“Hello.” Arya waved at the couple, a smirk plastered across her face. Pearl snorted, disgruntlement etched on her face. “Have you come to make fun of us?”“No! Not at all!” Arya shook her head, yet she refused to discard her wry smile. “Why would I do such a thing?” She asked silently, moving her eyes from Pearl to Romeo, and back to Pearl. “As a matter of fact, I have come to sympathize with both of you. Not every day do we get to see people get so disappointed and yet stand courageous like you.” She tutted continuously, shaking her head with a palpable sneer. Her words stung the couple as though a hive of bees had attacked them, their temper rising as they scowled at her. “What did you do to make Mr. Adkins put your name on the list?” Romeo asked, but Pearl interrupted before Arya could decide if she was going to respond or not. “Did you sleep with him?” Her voice was cold, her glaring eyes demanding an immediate response, refusing to even blink. Arya scoffed, and
