“I just came to take my belongings…” Brian explained, calm as the wind.

Pearl scoffed, and then she looked down at the belongings Brian talked about.

“I think you should hurry and leave us. We don’t want you infecting us with your wretchedness.”

The other ladies laughed, sneering as they watched Brian bend to gather his belongings.

He held onto the bag and the picture tightly, and then he took a deep breath.

Pearl stepped forward, and then she slid her hand into her purse.

“Here…” She handed a cheque to Brian, disdain still glittering in her eyes.

“That’s a cheque of one million dollars, Brian. That’s more than you will ever make in five years. Romeo was generous enough to give it to you. That should be enough for your troubles and keep you away from me forever.”

“I don’t want your money,” Brian stated causing the ladies to gasp.

Then they laughed, mockery laced in their amusement.

“What an idiot!” Nelly grunted, disgust written all over her face.

“How can you be broke and proud at the same time? You must think so highly of yourself. You’d better take the money and see if you can make something tangible out of your life.”

Brian smiled, and then he exhaled sharply.

“Keep it. You are the ones who will be needing it.” He looked at the ladies one after the other, but they clearly didn’t understand what he meant.

“Take this…” Pearl broke the silence, and then she threw the second paper at him, causing it to land on his chest before dropping to the ground.

“That’s the divorce paper, Brian. Sign it and leave my life. Never to return.”

Brian sniggered, and then he picked up the paper, opening it to read the content.

“Sign over there…” Pearl pointed, handing him that blue pen she had already taken out of her purse.

Slowly, Brian lifted his face and looked her in the eyes.

“No…” He whispered, causing Pearl to arch her brows.

He went further to shred the paper into pieces, and loud awes erupted from the ladies, their eyes wide with shock.

“How dare you do that, Brian?!” Lady Bianca sparked with rage, her eyes looking down at the pieces papers.

Brian cleared his throat, still looking into Pearl’s eyes.

“I will not grant you that freedom you so much wish for, Pearl. You would have to beg for it.”

“What?!” Pearl grunted, anger sparking in her eyes.

The pen she was holding fell out of her fingers as soon as she angrily pointed at Brian.

“Don’t mess with me, Brian! You will regret it!”

Brian laughed, causing her expression to drop, and so did those of the other ladies.

“I am so scared!” Brian exclaimed, sarcasm laced in his tone.

Then he grunted, replacing his smirk with a scowl.

“You are the one who has messed up big time, Pearl. And you will live to regret it. All of you…”

He took one last look at the ladies, and then he walked away, prompting them to look at him while he disappeared.

They were all rendered speechless, but Pearl was desperate enough to drift back to consciousness.

She took out her phone and made a call.

“Hello, Romeo! He has refused to sign the goddamn papers!” She lamented, grunting in frustration.

Meanwhile, Brian was already back on the road, speeding along the empty lane.

The streetlights illumined his path, his fists holding tightly to the steering wheel.

But barely ten kilometers from the Berry Villa vicinity, he saw some figures down the road.

At first, he thought it was nothing, until he got closer and realized that the road had been blocked by some hoodlums.

He recognized the three of them- Romeo’s thugs.

They were certainly sent by him, each heavily built and standing with violence.

Brian couldn’t drive through, they had blocked the road with their van.

He was forced to stop, and then he alighted.

He was enraged, his chest rising and falling at the same time.

“Hello, Brian…” Their leader stepped forward, slowly shifting his leather jacket to reveal the dagger tucked inside his pants.

“Boss said you have been a bad boy. He wants us to teach you a lesson.”

“I see…” Brian scoffed, and then he took a deep breath.

“Just the three of you?” He pointed, ridicule laced in his tone.

The thugs looked at each other, and then they returned their gazes to Brian.

“I see you’ve got a big mouth.” One of them broke the silence, turning to face their leader.

“I think we should break all his bones, Jack. We will cut his tongue and feed it to him…”

“Certainly…” Jack nodded, and then he stepped forward with annoyance on his face.

“He talks too much.”

Brian took a deep breath, and then he cleared his throat.

“I suggest you leave before I change my mind. Tell Romeo that he needs more than three men to be able to beat me.”

Jack gnashed his teeth, completely losing his patience.

He advanced, lunging an attack at once.

Brian caught his hand in the air, and then he buried his fist in his belly, causing him to sprawl to the ground.

Jack’s subordinates were taken aback, drifting backward with wide eyes.

They had become wary of Brian, staring at Jack who could barely move while he held onto his stomach, grunting and whimpering.

“What the hell are you guys looking at?!” Jack fired, turning to his subordinates.

“Get this motherfucker!” He ordered even in pain, but before they could make any move, the flashes of a car headlamp stopped them from a distance.

“We need to leave! That could be the cops!”

They panicked, grabbed Jack, and scrambled into their van.

Brian watched them drive away, and then he turned around to look at the white stainless car approaching.

It pulled to a stop right in front of him, the blinding lights causing him to shield his eyes with his hand.

The next second, someone alighted, heels first before the rest of the body followed.

“Is that a goddess?” Brian thought, his eyes almost gawking at the lady.

The nurse froze, standing right in front of the sick man. She could only roll her bulging eyes, struggling to catch her breath.“Is there any problem, sir?” Leon asked, staring at Brian. “No…” Brian shook his head while his eyes were still on the nurse. “What is that?” He pointed at the stainless steel, preparing to take a step forward. Leon scoffed. “That’s medication for Mr. Duncan, sir. You speak as though you are looking at something else…”“What kind of medication?” Brian questioned, and then he turned to give the Doctor a piercing stare. “I… I…” Leon stuttered, forced to take a deep breath. “I do not understand what you are saying, sir. I think you should allow the nurse to do her job. Mr. Duncan needs to be given those injections. They would make his blood pressure stable while we prepare him for surgery.” “Hmm?” Brian nodded, slowly returning his gaze to the nurse.“To keep his blood pressure stable, you say?”“Yes…” Leon gave a quick response, nodding to af

“What did you just say?” Diego’s eyes were widened, his jaw dropped while he stared at the lady.Any other person would have gasped, his eyes glaring with a rising annoyance. “I am sure I spoke plain English, Sir.” Wendy sounded a bit arrogant, rolling her eyes at the baby. “I heard your company is one of the top Tech companies in Lakeville. So paying a hundred million dollars in damages shouldn’t be a problem for you…” Brian scoffed, taking his eyes off the lady.Apart from the greed that was etched on the lady’s face, he could also sense her ignorance. “Do you know who I am?” He asked, pointing to himself while he maintained his wry smile. Wendy looked at him from hair to the soles of his shoes, and it seemed as though she was also making use of that opportunity to size him up.“I don’t know…” She muttered, returning her gaze to Brian’s face.“I am assuming that you are the Manager of the Company, and this man could be your driver.” She pointed to Diego without looking

Wendy still had her eyes on Leon, and when she was ready to speak, she cleared her throat twice before she turned to face the man who had questioned her.“Take a look at my husband, Sir…” She sniffled, leaving everyone stunned as a result of the tears that raced out of her eyes. “He was just working hard and trying to fend for his family. He promised me that he was going to be back early today so that he could massage my feet. Now look at him, lying there like a log of wood.” Her voice was shaky, and no matter how hard she sniffled, she couldn’t get rid of the tears that were trickling down her face. “Take it easy, Wendy…” Leon paused, instantly regretting his u

  • The Demand

“Yes!” Leon quickly got up, adjusted his coat, and moved toward Brian and Diego. He stood about a meter before them, yet he couldn’t lift his eyes to look at them.“Doctor?” Brian called out in a low tone, but that still couldn’t make the Doctor look up.“You seem to be very concerned about Miss Duncan. If I didn’t know any better, I would have concluded that you were her husband and not Cole here…” Leon instinctively lifted his face, but could only stare at Brian for a nanosecond. “I always make sure that my patients are in good health, Mr. Brian. Their welfare is my priority…” “Of course…” Brian chuckled softly, then he cleared his throat. “So…” He continued with a voice barely above a whisper, still giving the Doctor a piercing stare while his wry smile was still intact. “What’s the way forward? How do we take care of this man?” He pointed to Cole, the same concern glittering in his eyes. Before he could say even a word, Leon turned to Wendy as though she was the Do
