The Eurocopter dropped out of the grey New York sky like a stone, its rotors screaming against the wind as the pilot slammed the craft down onto the estate’s reinforced pad. The skid landing was hard, sending a sharp shudder through the leather cabin floor.

Liam Cross hurriedly came down. Daniel Park scrambled out behind him, his fingers already working his encrypted handheld device to trace the dead communication lines.

"The server core in the basement is back online, Liam," Daniel rasped, his face tight as they hurried across the rooftop toward the private elevator. "Serena’s local network was temporarily blinded by an active software purge. The internal security feed is tracking Gerald Holt down in the subterranean garage annex right now."

The elevator dropped through the floors with a mechanical hiss, stopping at the lowest concrete level. When the doors split open, the sharp smell of burnt wire and copper met them.

The corridor leading to the isolated cells was lit by harsh red emergency lamps. Serena Blaine stood near the reinforced steel entrance, her long jet-black hair falling wild over her shoulders, her fingers clenched so tightly around her digital brief that the leather casing creaked. Her gold-flecked amber eyes locked onto Liam, and her chest heaving with shallow breaths.

"The medical team just cleared the threshold, Mr. Cross," Serena whispered, her voice dropping into a quiet, sharp hum. "It was surgical. Two suppressed rounds through the viewport before the server room could register the biometric override. They didn't even have time to stand up from their chairs."

Liam didn't look at the bodies inside the cell. He walked straight past the iron frame, his eyes fixed on Gerald Holt, who stood over a third man pinned against the concrete wall by two black-clad operators.

The captive wasn't a stranger. He wore the standard dark jacket of the Cross Group enforcement grid.

It was Miller—one of the senior security officers who had ridden in the lead vehicle with Daniel during the dock ambush a few hours ago. His nose was broken, a dark trail of blood dripping from his jaw onto his uniform crest.

"We caught him at the secondary drainage lift," Gerald stated flatly, his unyielding dark eyes never leaving the prisoner's face. "He used a cloned supervisor token to clear the lower vault. He was the one who ran the security lines during the harbor raid."

Liam stopped inches from Miller, his large, calloused hands resting inside his pockets.

"Who signed your wire, Miller?" Liam asked, his voice a freezing whisper that cut through the low drone of the server fans.

Miller spat a glob of blood onto the concrete, his shoulders shaking under the heavy grip of the guards. "It didn't come from the tower, Mr. Cross. I don't answer to any of your excutive's ledger."

"Ethan Aldridge," Daniel snapped, stepping forward, his knuckles raw and white. "You were the leak on the perimeter boat. You let the other six operators clear the shipping lanes. So all these while you were a spy?"

"I take my commands from the northern sector," Miller choked out, a ragged laugh escaping his lips. "Just like the boys in the chairs did. But you're hunting a ghost, Mr. Park. You think you're going to squeeze a confession out of me about the master's location?"

Liam didn't move an inch. "Speak clearly."

"Nobody has met Ethan, young master" Miller whispered, his eyes widening with a sudden, frantic intensity as he looked directly into Liam's dead stare. "In twenty years, not a single officer in the northern grid has seen his face or stood in his presence. We don't take wires from Ethan Aldridge. We take every instruction, every command, and every weekly payment directly from the bald man."

The room grew chillingly quiet. Serena stepped closer to the wall, her brow furrowing. "The bald man at the gate... he’s the only physical proxy?"

"He's the only voice that carries the code," Miller rasped, his head falling forward as his energy gave out. "The master... we don't even know if Ethan is real anymore. We don't know if it's a name the syndicate uses to keep us in line or if the old man died in Panama twenty years ago.

The trident code moves through the bald man. That's the only truth we have."

Daniel turned his head sharply toward Liam, his round face creased with real concern. "Liam, if the entire northern infrastructure is operating under a single blind proxy, our tracking logs are useless. We can't verify if Ethan is directing the six escaped operators or if the bald man is running a rogue operation in our city."

Gerald Holt’s dark eyes narrowed to cold slits, his hand tightening into a fist at his side. "Sir, we need to deploy the full New York security detail to run a counter-sweep. If six high-tier contractors are loose in the sector without a clear face behind them, the estate perimeter is vulnerable."

Liam slowly pulled his right hand from his pocket, "No," Liam rumbled, his voice a flat wall of stone that silenced the room completely.

"Mr. Cross?" Serena asked, her gold-flecked eyes searching his face. "Six armed men are still loose in your city, and we need to act before something happens."

"I already said this before, let them be loose," Liam stated flatly, turning his back on the prisoner. "Take Miller down to the deep holding tier. Lock him in an isolated block where he can't touch a terminal. No communication with the upper house."

"And the search detail for the harbor?" Daniel pressed, stepping into his path.

"There is no search detail, Daniel" Liam commanded, now turning fully to face his friend with a sovereign calm that brooked no argument. "I told you all that he is playing games with me, he wants me distracted and totally focused on catching him, so he could carry whatever he is planning.

Ethan Aldridge spent twenty-four years watching my family from the dark. If he is alive, and if he wants a real war with me, he will not stay hidden behind a bald messenger forever. He will be forced to walk into my boardroom and look at my ledger himself."

He adjusted the cuffs of his old, stained t-shirt, his posture entirely detached from the violence around him.

"Two dead mercenaries and a rogue guard do not change the balance of this empire," Liam whispered, his voice sending a chilling vibration through the concrete corridor.

"Walter Steves is already back at his desk running my logistics. The biometric locks are holding the board by the throat. We don't waste time chasing ghosts through the streets. We have other accounts to settle."

He looked at Gerald, then at Serena.

"Clear the cells. Clean the floor. The northern front is frozen until they reach out to my chair to buy their teeth back. The matter is finished."

The two operators instantly dragged Miller away toward the heavy iron doors of the lower tier, his boots scraping loudly against the concrete until the secondary release lock clicked shut, sealing him into the dark.

Serena clutched her tablet back to her chest, her breathing finally slowing down as the absolute, crushing authority of Liam's decision settled over the basement core. The panic was gone. The security leak was neutralized. The master grid of the Cross Group estate had returned to its rigid, silent state.

Liam walked back toward the elevator core, his face a hard wall of granite. The corporate distractions were behind him now. The domestic leaks were plugged. It was time to turn his gaze back to the people who had started the rain.

Her face was perfectly composed, but her amber eyes remained fixed on Liam as she reclaimed her legal ledger.Gerald Holt strode into the circular glow of the desk lamp. The green desk lamp hummed softly, casting a low, circular glow over the mountain of corporate ledgers on the mahogany table. It was past midnight. The rest of the Manhattan townhouse was entirely dark, but inside the private study, the only sound was the sharp, periodic scratching of Serena's stylus against her digital pad.Beyond the tall windows, Manhattan glittered beneath the night sky. Headlights moved along the distant streets like thin streams of light, while the occasional siren rose from somewhere below before disappearing into the city's restless silence. The townhouse itself remained undisturbed, its corridors empty and its security systems operating quietly behind the walls.Inside the study, however, the atmosphere felt anything but peaceful.A half-empty glass of water sat beside Liam's laptop. She didn't turn around immediately. "The filing is complete, Mr. Cross. There is no need to check the regional registries until Monday morning.""I am not talking about the filing, Serena," Liam said, his voice quiet. "I am talking about your family. Every transaction had been processed, every authorization verified, and every digital signature secured. The operation had taken weeks of careful coordination, but the final result was exactly what they wanted. There was no reason to celebrate yet, though.
