“Yo, Varrow, did you forget your brain at home again?”
The words echoed through the big classroom, followed by a wave of laughter. Everyone turned, eyes full of mockery. Eren Varrow didn’t even need to raise his head. He already knew that voice. Darius Kane. The school’s golden boy, second son of the Great house of Kane, martial arts genius; ranked S in Martial class, best in wielding the sword and number one reason why Eren’s life was trash..
Eren lowered his eyes, pretending to read the heavy book in front of him. The book was about runes and magic formations, but honestly, none of the letters made sense. His vision blurred from the shame pressing on his chest.
This was normal. This was his life. It didn’t matter if it was Martial Arts class, Medicine class, or Magic class—he was always the punching bag.
In Lumeris Academy of Mystics, power was everything. Students weren’t just learning—no, they were divided, measured, and ranked like trophies. Every single person had to take the three main paths:
Martial Arts – training body and strength.
Medicine – learning herbs, potions, and healing skills. Magic – mastering the elements and spellcasting. But rankings decided who mattered. Each path had grades: S, A, B, C, and D.
S-class students were legends. They got special treatment, the best teachers, and all the resources.
D-class students… were dirt. The lowest of the low. They were mocked, ignored, and sometimes even beaten up.And Eren? He was the only one who had managed to hit rock bottom in all three.
Martial Arts: D
Medicines: D Magic: DThe Triple D Failure.
Nobody in the school’s history had ever been that bad. Nobody. He was the joke of the academy.
“Man, it’s embarrassing just looking at him,” one boy muttered, throwing a folded paper at the back of Eren’s head. Laughter broke out again. “He should just drop out already. Save space.”
Eren’s hands tightened into fists under the desk. His teeth pressed together until his jaw hurt. But he stayed quiet. He always stayed quiet. Because no matter what he said, no matter how hard he tried, nobody listened. Nobody cared.
“Hey, Vale,” a girl called out. “Don’t sit too close. What if your failure’s contagious?”. The laughter increased.
The teacher, an older mage with silver hair, sighed when his eyes landed on Eren. That sigh said everything. Why are you even here?
Eren stared down at the cracked jade pendant hanging from his neck. It was small, old, and dull. The only thing his parents may have left him. Sometimes he held it at night, wishing it would glow or reveal a secret. But it never did. It was just a piece of stone. Like him—useless.
A soft voice broke into his thoughts.
“Don’t mind them, Eren,” Serena Arclight whispered beside him. Her voice was sweet, almost kind. She tucked her long hair behind her ear and smiled faintly.
Eren’s heart jumped. Serena was everything he wasn’t. Beautiful. Talented. Magic A-class, Martial Arts B-class, with teachers praising her progress. She always smelled like fresh lilies, and her laugh sounded like something from a dream. Out of everyone, she was the only one who spoke to him nicely. Even if her eyes sometimes looked like she pitied him. Even if sometimes her smile looked like it was hiding something.
Still, she was the one person who made him feel like he wasn’t completely invisible.
“Thanks, Serena,” Eren mumbled, too shy to meet her eyes.
Before he could even breathe, Darius leaned forward in his chair, smirking like the devil himself. His voice cut through the room.
“Careful, Varrow. A dog should know better than to dream about its master’s girl.”
The classroom erupted again. Some students slapped their desks from laughing too hard. Others just shook their heads like the joke was too true to deny.
Heat crawled up Eren’s neck. His ears burned. His chest ached. But he still didn’t say anything. He just sat there, silent. Because that’s what he always did.
Inside though… inside he wished—no, he craved—just once to stand up and shut them all up. Just once to prove he wasn’t a mistake.
But that was impossible. Right?
After all, he was the lowest of the low. The weakest of the weak. The one nobody believed in.
Later in Martial Arts class, the mocking only got worse.
The students lined up in front of the training dummies. One by one, they unleashed powerful strikes—booming kicks, bone-cracking punches. Sparks flew from the enchanted dummies as they absorbed the blows.
When it was Eren’s turn, whispers started right away.
“Watch him break his own arm again.”
“Bet he won’t even dent it.”
Eren steadied himself. He pulled in a breath and punched.
Thud.
Pain shot up his arm. The dummy didn’t move. His knuckles stung. Behind him, laughter exploded.
“HAHA! The dummy’s tougher than him!”
“Bro just punched like a baby!”
Darius smirked, stepping forward after him. With one kick, he split the dummy in half. The crowd cheered his name. Eren stepped back, clutching his hand, wishing the floor would swallow him.
Medicines class wasn’t any better.
Students carefully mixed herbs and powders into glowing potions. The air smelled of mint and fireflower.
Eren’s hands shook as he tried to copy the instructions. He added one wrong root, and suddenly his cauldron fizzed.
BOOM!
Smoke filled the room. Everyone coughed.
When the cloud cleared, Eren was covered in green slime. His hair stuck up in every direction.
“Oh Damn! He made poison instead of a potion!”
“Don’t drink that unless you wanna die!”
Even the teacher pinched the bridge of his nose. “Varrow… just clean it up.”
The last class of the day, Applied magic class was usually the worst.
The students stood in a wide field, each casting elemental spells. Fireballs lit up the sky, gusts of wind bent the grass, lightning cracked in the distance.
When it was Eren’s turn, he held out his hand, chanting the simplest spell: Spark.
A tiny light flickered in his palm… and fizzled out. Nothing.
The silence lasted a moment. Then someone snorted. Then the laughter came, rolling across the field.
“He can’t even make a candle flame!”
“Man, even babies can spark!”
Eren’s stomach knotted. He turned away, face burning.
When the day ended, Eren walked alone down the quiet hallway. His classmates’ voices still rang in his ears. Failure. Dog. Useless.
Eren sighed, shoulders heavy, and walked on.
The weakest of the weak.
The Triple D Failure.

CHAPTER 13: The Martial Round
“Are you ready for this?” Lyra whispered as they walked back to the ground for the next round.Eren shook his head, trying to hide his nervousness. “I… I think so. Just don’t laugh if I mess up.”Lyra smirked. “Mess up? Please. Something has changed since the shadowfold incident. You’ve improved. Let’s see what you can do.”Many first-year students had already returned from the fifteen-minute break and were waiting for the next round to start. The large screen above the field lit up, showing each first-year student’s number and the second-year opponent they would face. The crowd of students and supervising teachers watched in silence.Eren’s number flashed bright on the screen. His opponent? Ryen Crestfall, a second-year known for precise combat and brutal strikes.Lebel’s voice cut through the air. “Today’s match will be judged and scored based on form, technique, and defense, not winning or losing. You can use weapons if you want. The judges are watching closely. Fight clean. Fight
CHAPTER 12: The Medicine Round
“Alright, first-years,” Lebel said, his voice calm but commanding. “The first round is the Medicine Round. You’ll be tested on three things: your ability to brew a potion, perform a healing spell, and revive a dying plant. Each task will test your control and understanding of flow. Do your best.”The students exchanged nervous glances. Some smiled with confidence, others fidgeted with their gloves.Eren stood between Lyra and Carid, trying not to let the butterflies in his stomach get the better of him. He wasn’t exactly the top student when it came to theory or practical healing. In fact, he had failed more classes than he could count. Lyra nudged him. “You ready for this?”Eren gave a small grin. “I think so. What about you?”She sighed. “Let’s just say I’m not the best at medicine.”Canrid stretched his arms, cracking his knuckles. “Well, I am. You guys better watch and learn.”Lyra shot him a teasing look. “Well, your affinity for medicine is probably very high. I don't think I'm
CHAPTER 11: The Test
The morning sun spilled through the tall glass windows of the joint lecture hall, filling it with golden light. The first years were buzzing with chatter. Eren sat with Lyra and Carid near the middle row.“So,” Carid said, adjusting his glasses, “I heard they’re bringing a new assessment today. Something big.”Eren groaned. “Can’t we have one normal class without surprises?”Lyra smirked. “Says the guy who almost got killed in a Shadowfold and lived to tell the tale.”Eren shot her a playful glare. “Don’t remind me.”Carid chuckled. “If it’s a test, I hope it’s not martial arts. I still haven’t recovered from that last spar.”Before Eren could reply, a soft voice called out, “Um… Eren Varrow, right?”They turned. A pretty girl with bright brown eyes and long curls stood there holding a book. She smiled shyly.“My name's Anna. I was wondering if you could… maybe help me with Magic Theory later? You’re really good with it, and I could use a study partner.”Eren scratched the back of his
CHAPTER 10: The Strange Man
Silence filled the hall. Eren’s heart beat faster, but before he could say anything, Lebel stepped forward.“How do you know that name?” Lebel didn't respond. He just sat down and stared. After a long silence, Eren sighed. “Alright… I’m listening,” he said quietly.Lebel turned toward him. “Good. I was sent here to find you,” he said.“Find me? What are you talking about?” Eren asked, frowning.Lebel took a slow step closer. “I know about your parents, Eren. I know what really happened that night.”Eren’s eyes widened slightly . “You know my parents? How?”“I can tell you everything,” Lebel replied. “But before that, you need to learn how to control your power. If you want answers to the questions you have, you’ll have to learn control. And I’m the best person to teach you that.”“Just answer this one question,” Eren said, looking into the man's silver eyes. “My parents... are they still alive?”Lebel nodded. “They are, but at the level you are now, you won't be able to find them unl
CHAPTER 9: Shadows On The Train
“Next stop—Hazelcross Station.”The voice from the train speaker crackled, pulling Eren from his half-asleep daze. He blinked at the window, watching the blurred lights of the city streak past. It was already late, and only a few passengers remained. A woman slept near the front, her head against the glass, and an old man read a newspaper two seats away. Everything felt quiet. Peaceful.Eren exhaled and rubbed his eyes. “Just one more stop,” he muttered. “Then home.”The lights shook once. Twice. Then, with a low hum, went out completely. The train screeched to a halt. Silence filled the air. Darkness covered everything. The passengers looked around, confused.Eren frowned and stood up. “What’s going on?”A sound came from the end of the carriage. A soft scraping, like claws dragging against metal. Then another. Eren’s eyes darted toward the noise. The darkness seemed to move, thick and alive. From beneath the seats, shadows began to crawl, shaping into long, twisted figures with glow

The air was heavy, almost suffocating. At the center was a large podium were the headmaster and teachers sat. The headmaster stepped forward, his robes swaying slightly as his deep voice echoed through the hall.“As many of you know,” he began, “a dangerous event took place in the Shadowfold five days ago. After full assessment, it was confirmed as a Grade C Shadowfold which was not meant to contain any shadow weavers. But investigations are still ongoing… because something unprecedented happened.”Whispers rippled through the hall.“The Shadowfold,” he said firmly, “has completely… disappeared.”Gasps erupted. A shadowfold vanishing was unheard of.The headmaster raised a hand for silence. “But even in such dark moments, bravery shines. Today, we honor the students who fought against the Shadow Weaver that day.”He gestured to the crowd. “Darius Kan
