Outside Mara's  home, Dane walked back and forth. His Assistant stood on the wood porch. He hit the door hard and yelled Mara's name loudly. The house stayed quiet. No one answered. They waited for a long time. The quietness made Dane feel very worried. Finally, the wood door slowly opened. A mean old woman stepped out. She rubbed her eyes like she just woke up from a deep sleep. She looked at Dane. She seemed very angry and crossed her arms tightly.

"What is all this yelling about?" the old woman said. "Is our young lady's name something you can yell in the street? You missed her. She went to Mr. Croft's mansion hours ago to sign a deal. That paper will lead to her marrying Vaughn Croft today. From now on, she will be a very important person. She won't be someone just anyone can call out to."

Hearing the name Vaughn Croft with the word marriage, Dane stopped still. He knew who Vaughn Croft was. Vaughn was an evil man who hurt people. Cold fear grabbed Dane's chest. That fear quickly turned into hot anger.

"Get back in the car!" he yelled at his assistant. "Drive to Vaughn Croft's home! Drive as fast as you can!"

The car moved very fast. The tires made a loud sound on the road. Dane sat in the back seat. His hands were shaking because he was so mad. He prayed he was not too late.

Inside the high walls of Vaughn Croft's huge mansion Mara was thrown hard onto the cold stone floor in the main room. She cried out in pain. Vaughn Croft rubbed his big hands together. A sick, evil smile grew on his face. He jumped right at Mara. His heavy hands tried to tear her clothes off.

They were right out in the open. But all the workers and guards in the house had run away. They were scared for their lives. They knew their boss did terrible things. Nobody would dare to bother him now.

Mara fought back hard. She kicked her legs. She screamed for help until her throat hurt. But the giant house hid her cries.

Vaughn lifted his heavy hand. He slapped her hard across the face. "Be quiet, girl!" he yelled. "Stop fighting me, or I swear I will kill you right here today! Just be good, and you might even like it!"

Mara's eyes could not see straight. Her mean stepmother had secretly given her sleeping medicine before bringing her here. The  medicine was taking over her brain. She felt totally weak. When her arms finally lost their strength and fell to the floor, Vaughn laughed. He used his heavy body to hold her down. He was getting ready to do whatever he wanted.

CRASH!

A loud sound of breaking wood filled the room. The heavy wood front doors of the house were kicked open. They were kicked with so much power that the metal parts broke off.

Dane ran into the room. His hands were closed into hard fists. His eyes burned with pure anger. He looked right at the him holding Mara on the floor.

"Let her go!" Dane yelled. His loud voice shook the room. "Who gave you the nerve to touch my woman?!"

"Yes, that is him," a businessman replied, his tone dripping with absolute disgust. "He is the disgrace. Do you not remember the massive scandal? They say he was the one who drugged Berry.""I heard the rumors," another woman gasped quietly, her eyes wide with scandalous delight. "They say he slipped something into her drink at a private estate party. He ruined her reputation completely. His family threw him into the streets to rot because of it. What is a monster like him doing back in high society?"The dark, ugly rumors echoed loudly enough for everyone in the circle to hear. The crowd stared at Dane with overwhelming revulsion, treating him like a convicted criminal who had just crawled out of a sewer.Bary smiled smugly, feeling entirely vindicated by the crowd's reaction. He stepped closer to Dane. "Do you hear that? Everyone knows what you are. You are a disgusting criminal. Security will be here in a minute to drag you out by your hair."Dane did not look at Bary. Berry stopped three feet in front of him. Her chest was heaving, her perfectly applied makeup unable to hide the bright, flushed red of her cheeks. She looked at his calm, entirely unbothered face, and it only made her angrier."I called your name," Berry demanded, her voice shaking with a mix of fury and something deeply vulnerable. "I know you heard me. Why are you running away? Why do you constantly avoid me like a plague every single time we are in the same city?""Hello, Berry," Dane replied, his voice painfully polite and entirely devoid of emotion. "I am not avoiding you. I am simply very busy tonight. Excuse me, I have urgent matters to attend to elsewhere."He gave her a brief, dismissive nod and stepped to the side, attempting to walk past her. Before Dane could take two steps, a man violently threw his arm out, physically blocking Dane’s path.It was one of Berry’s most desperate sycophants—a young, arrogant heir named Bary, dressed in a bespoke navy-blue tuxedo.
