Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Today is the day he and Lana Hayes get their marriage license.
Nine-thirty in the morning. Ten o'clock. Eleven o'clock. Still nothing from her.
Dane Mercer paced the hard concrete steps outside the city hall. The morning sun was getting hot, buthis blood felt ice cold. He stared down at his phone screen.
Twenty messages sent. Zero replies. What was happening? Maybe she was touching herself up to look beautiful. He thought as he could not help but smile to himself.
He tried to send Hayes another message to add to other previous message, he had sent to her asking where she was, they were marked as read. She saw them. He noticed the last ten messages did not even go through. A bright red exclamation mark sat next to every single one.
Lana had blocked his number. What was happening?
Today was the day they were supposed to get their marriage license. In five full years of dating, Lana had never once been on time. Not for his birthday, not for their anniversaries, not for anything.
But this time was supposed to be different. Just yesterday, Lana was the one who looked him in the eyes and suggested they finally get married. Dane was so excited he could not sleep for a single second all night. He had carefully packed all his documents into his worn-out backpack. He had arrived thirty minutes early.
He waited for an hour and a half, looking like a fool.
A bitter smile crossed Dane's face. He slowly unzipped his bag and tucked the marriage documents inside. He was just about to turn around and walk to the bus stop when his phone buzzed violently in his hand.
It was a text message from a college classmate.
Dude, Take a look at this. Your girlfriend just said yes to someone else's proposal at the girls' dormitory entrance.
Dane heart stopped taking hair. Below the text was a high-resolution photo.
In the picture, Lana was wearing a beautiful white dress. She was smiling brighter than she ever smiled at him. She was holding a massive bouquet of red roses and accepting a giant diamond ring from a man in an expensive custom suit. A huge crowd of students was cheering around them.
Furious, Dane did not wait for the bus. He ran to the street, flagged down a taxi, and paid the driver extra to speed straight back to the university.
The entrance to the girls' dormitory was packed. Hundreds of students were gathered around, clapping and taking videos on their phones.
Dane shoved his way roughly through the crowd. "Move!" he barked.
He broke through to the front circle and locked eyes with Lana. The diamond ring was already sparkling on her finger. The man next to her had his arm wrapped tightly around her waist.
"Why Lana?" Dane demanded. His voice cut through the loud cheers, making the crowd go dead silent. "Why did you say yes to someone else's proposal? Weren't we supposed to meet at ten in the morning today to get our marriage license?"
People in the crowd started whispering and pointing at Dane. He was wearing faded jeans and a plain white t-shirt. Compared to the wealthy man standing next to Lana, Dane looked like a beggar.
Lana did not look guilty at all. Instead, she crossed her arms and sneered at him.
"You are just a poor student," Lana said loudly, making sure everyone could hear. "I am the heir of the Hayes Family. My family is wealthy and powerful. Why would I ever get a marriage license with a loser like you?"
She proudly leaned against the man in the suit. "Cade is the only son of the nation's richest man. He is the heir of the Mercer Family. He has absolute power and limitless money. He is the fiancé I truly desire. You are nothing compared to him."
Dane stared at her, then let out a low, dark laugh to himself.
The heir of the Mercer Family? Dane was the true heir of the Mercer Family.

The iron gates of the mafia compound were locked tight. Outside in the dark, dozens of armed guards patrolled the high stone walls with vicious guard dogs. But inside the main house, in the master office, the air was entirely dead and silent. The room smelled of old leather, stale cigar smoke, and the sharp, chemical scent of medical alcohol. The crime boss sat in his heavy motorized wheelchair behind a massive oak desk. The room was dark, lit only by a single small lamp. Both of his arms were wrapped in thick, heavy white plaster casts. His shattered legs were bolted firmly to the metal footrests. He could not move without feeling a blinding, stabbing pain in his bones.Suddenly, the absolute silence was broken by a sharp, electronic buzz.A small, cheap black burner phone on the desk lit up.The father leaned his upper body forward, groaning in deep pain. He could not use his fingers, so he awkwardly nudged the phone with the edge of his cast until the screen turned on. It was a hi

Chapter 44The grand ballroom of the Sterling estate had become a graveyard of ruined luxury. Just twenty minutes ago, it was the most beautiful, glittering room in the entire city. Now, it was completely destroyed.Overturned tables lay scattered across the floor like fallen trees. Expensive champagne dripped slowly from torn velvet tablecloths, pooling onto the cold marble like tears. Abandoned designer high heels, dropped silk purses, and a single, crushed diamond earring littered the ground. The air no longer smelled of rich, roasted food and expensive perfume; it smelled heavily of sharp, burnt gunpowder and the sour sweat of human panic. The screaming crowds were finally gone. The heavy wooden exit doors were locked tightly from the inside. The private security guards were outside in the dark, desperately securing the massive perimeter of the estate.Dane stood completely alone near the center of the silent room. He looked down at the violent crater in the marble tile. The high-c

The heavy, uncomfortable tension in the grand ballroom was thick enough to cut with a knife. The whispering slowly stopped."My dear friends and honored guests!" the Patriarch announced, his strong voice echoing across the room. He smiled warmly, trying to push the dark shadows away.
