Darkness gave way to a blinding white light that pricked at Nathan’s senses, dragging him from the void. His mind swam with fragments of memories—the gunshot, the overwhelming pain, and the voice in the void asking if he wanted to live. He blinked, his eyelids heavy, his body weighed down as if submerged in quicksand.

The first thing he noticed was the sterile smell of antiseptic. His throat was parched, his head throbbed, but he was alive.

Nathan slowly turned his head to the side, his vision adjusting to the dim glow of a hospital room. Machines beeped rhythmically, monitoring his vitals. He tried to lift his arm, wincing at the sharp pain radiating through his shoulder. A dull ache throbbed in his skull, but he could move, think, and feel.

How am I still alive?

The last thing he remembered was his wife’s cold smile and the bullet tearing through his head.

As he shifted slightly in bed, a faint hum resonated in his mind, like the static of a radio struggling to find a signal. He froze, his breath hitching.

“System initializing… Welcome, Nathan.”

Nathan’s heart skipped a beat. The voice wasn’t from the room; it echoed directly in his mind, clear and mechanical but oddly calm.

“What the hell?” he muttered hoarsely, his voice scratchy from disuse.

“System online. Analyzing host vitals… critical but stable. Neural pathways intact. Damage to cranium minimal. Recovery time: approximately six weeks.”

Nathan’s eyes widened. He looked around, half expecting to see someone standing nearby, but the room was empty.

“Who… who’s there?” he asked, his voice trembling.

“I am your integrated survival enhancement system. You may refer to me as Voss.’ I have been embedded within your neural framework to assist, guide, and optimize your capabilities.”

Nathan swallowed hard. He wasn’t sure if he was hallucinating or if something far stranger was happening. “Embedded? What are you talking about?”

“You were near death. Your decision to live activated latent protocols linked to your father’s creation. This system is a byproduct of his engineering legacy, designed for preservation and advancement of his bloodline. It is exclusive to you.”

Nathan’s head spun. “You’re saying my father… built you?”

“Affirmative. Your father’s work extended beyond the company’s operational systems. This system was created as a contingency for situations like this.”

Nathan stared at the ceiling, trying to process the information. My father’s invention... His bloodline... The revelations from the psychiatrist’s house flooded back to him.

“Fine,” he said finally, his voice steadier. “If you’re real, prove it.”

“Accessing interface.”

Nathan’s vision blurred for a moment, and then something extraordinary happened. A translucent overlay appeared before his eyes, displaying data in neat, glowing text:

HOST: NATHAN BROOKS

STATUS: Stable

HEALTH: 68%

ENERGY: Low

ABILITIES: Unlocked (0%)

OBJECTIVES:

Recover physical strength.

Investigate headquarters portal.

Secure father’s legacy.

Nathan blinked rapidly, but the display remained fixed in his vision. It was like a heads  up display from a video game, except he wasn’t wearing anything.

“This… this is insane,” he whispered.

“System synchronization is at 20%. As synchronization progresses, additional features will become available. Would you like to explore your current capabilities?”

Nathan hesitated. His logical mind screamed for caution, but curiosity won. “What can you do?”

“In the current state, the system offers basic diagnostics and limited predictive analysis. Example: Monitoring your surroundings for potential threats, optimizing recovery efforts, and relaying essential information about tasks.”

“Threats?” Nathan asked, his pulse quickening.

“Affirmative. For instance, someone has been monitoring your hospital room for the past three hours. Would you like details?”

Nathan sat up abruptly, wincing at the pain in his arm. “What? Who?”

A small section of the overlay expanded, displaying a live feed from what appeared to be a security camera. Outside his room, a man in a dark suit sat on a bench, his face partially obscured by a magazine.

“Subject identified as a private contractor hired by the Brooks family,” the system reported. “He has been stationed here since your admission.”

Nathan clenched his fists. Of course, they wouldn’t let him wake up without keeping tabs on him.

“What do I do about him?” he asked.

“Your current physical condition limits direct confrontation. It is recommended to evade detection upon discharge. Alternative routes can be mapped if required.”

Nathan exhaled sharply. “Great. Guess I’m not even safe in a hospital.”

“You are never truly safe, Nathan.”

The bluntness of the system’s response sent a chill down his spine.

“Fine,” he muttered. “What else can you do? Any more surprises?”

“Would you like to test cognitive enhancements?”

“Cognitive what?”

“Your neural pathways can be temporarily optimized for increased problem  solving, memory recall, and situational awareness. Activation will cause minor discomfort.”

Nathan scoffed. “Define ‘minor.’”

“Equivalent to a moderate headache.”

He rolled his eyes. “Let’s do it.”

A sudden surge of pressure built in his temples, sharp and relentless. Nathan groaned, gripping the sides of his head, but within moments, the pain subsided. The world around him seemed sharper—colors more vivid, sounds clearer.

“Enhancement active,” the system announced.

Nathan glanced at the clock on the wall. The ticking of the second hand seemed slower, almost deliberate. He turned his gaze to the overlay, now displaying minute details about the room—the dimensions, the temperature, even the airflow patterns.

“Whoa,” he murmured.

“This enhancement will last for ten minutes. Prolonged usage may result in cognitive fatigue.”

“Good to know,” Nathan muttered. He leaned back against the pillows, his mind racing.

“What’s my next step?” he asked.

“Objective priority is the portal at Brooks Corporation headquarters. Your bloodline grants access to its contents. However, your injury requires immediate attention. Rest is recommended before proceeding.”

Nathan frowned. “Rest? You think I have time for that? They tried to kill me. They’ll try again.”

“Survival is not a sprint, Nathan. It is a marathon. Choose your battles wisely.”

Nathan gritted his teeth. The system’s logic was infuriatingly sound, but it didn’t make the situation any easier.

“Fine,” he said. “But as soon as I’m discharged, we’re finishing this.”

“Affirmative. Synchronization will continue in the interim.”

Nathan lay back against the hospital bed, staring at the ceiling. He was alive, but for the first time in years, he felt like more than just a survivor. He had a purpose now, something worth fighting for.

And with the system’s help, he wasn’t going to let anyone take it from him.

Soon, Victor and the other man who was with him reached the building he had been staring at. The structure looks old, made of wood with cheap designs, and at the top, a thin chimney stood out against the very tall sky, and from it, smoke could be seen rising into the air. The man stepped forward toward the entrance of the door, pulled out a card from his suit pocket, and pressed it against a scanning glass platelet on the door. And in that moment, the glass scanner on the door beeped twice with a green light flashing across the screen, then the door creaked open. The man shifted his gaze to Victor, then gently moved to the side of the door, giving a clear path for Victor to step in. After this, he gestured for Henry to enter.“Sir, please go in. Grandmaster Zarek is waiting for you.”Victor was still wondering whether to step in or not. Everything wasn't making sense, from the entire journey to this specific moment. His heart pounding on his chest, and panic gradually began to rise

  • Chapter 301: Drop it

The moment Victor stepped into the car, the door shut close behind him with a thud. The driver in the front seat started the engine, and the vehicle sped off.Victor watched as the car raced forward, stunned as to where they were going. Zarek didn't specify the specific location they were heading to, and worst of all, Victor is unsure if these men were sent by Zarek. Even though he knew the city roads well and every lane they led to, it felt as if the men were driving him through a place he had never seen before. The roads look narrow, with bushes all on the sides.A towering mountain could be seen from a distance. The streets and everything looked different, strange, unfamiliar. It was as if they had teleported to another country, because Victor was sure that a few minutes ago, he had been keeping track of the road before everything became unfamiliar. Soon, the car came to a halt, and the door opened automatically. Victor stepped out in that instant, his eyes darting around, confu

  • Chapter 300: speaking of the devil

“Exactly, Mum. You understand my point fully well; that’s the aim, and we’re going to achieve it to the fullest. So you should just forget about Sophia and focus on our plan,” Victor chuckled, then relaxed back onto the sofa.Deep down, Jessica felt puzzled about the entire thing, the organisation's name, and a whole lot that sounds weird and very suspicious and most of all dangerous. But no matter what, she had to play along. Maybe through this, she might discover where her daughter was, and once she made contact with her, she would look for a way to escape the city—somewhere far away where even Victor couldn’t track them. She wished she could convince him to stop, but she knew if she tried, he wouldn’t hesitate to hurt her. He was as heartless as his father.Moments later, while Victor and Jessica were conversing, Victor’s phone began to ring. He shifted his gaze, picked it up from the side of the table, and answered the call.“Hello, who am I speaking with?” Victor asked first, his

  • Chapter 299: Hate of envy

“Yes, of course, you have to be surprised, because that stupid daughter of yours has never brought anything good to this family except pain and disappointment; she deserves nothing but a brutal death, since that's the path she has chosen,” Victor added, his fist clenched and his stare locking with Jessica.“Shut up your mouth, you foolish boy, are you speaking this because you hate Sophia or what? How do you know she snitched on us? Neither had a hand in Father’s death?” Jessica pressed, searching for something tangible to believe in what Victor had said.Jessica knew that Victor had always despised Sophia and would do anything to keep her away from anything that involved him. Victor sighed deeply, pushing his hands below a Conner, and brought out the device he had retrieved from Sophia, capable of taking incoming calls and recording them.He raised it to Jessica's sight, shook it before speaking. “This is the reason I knew all that I was telling you, so don't think I was blabbing or

  • Chapter 298: Claiming What Is Mine.

“Sir, that's all the bad news I have. I'm sorry, but that's…”Before Derick could finish what he was saying, Nathan raised his hands into the air and signaled for him to be quiet, which meant he was tired of what he wanted to say, and it was advisable not to say more. "It's okay," Nathan finally spoke after the long silence from Derick. He then gently dropped his hands to the ground. "The most important part is that she'll be fine, right? I don't care if she doesn't remember who I am or remember anything that has happened. All that matters now is that I will see her talk and smile again." Nathan smiled, then walked close to Sophia and sagged onto the bed she was lying on. He took her hand and squeezed it gently, staring into her pretty face. Sophia breathed warm and shallow; Nathan swore she smiled, as if caught in a dream. But it's all hallucination, his brain tricking him to believe his desires.Nathan smiled back, even though he knew the smile from her wasn't real, then leaned fo

  • Chapter 297: Sophia's condition

Earlier, Jordan had explained the situation to Nathan about the chemical Valtor stole from the police headquarters, containing valuable information, with high-class scientific research involving the Red Monac and the secret creation, about the core, and a lot more that could create weapons beyond Imagination that could take Nathan down. Because of how deadly this information was, and when it was found, the police had been forced to conceal it in a high-security basement where countless security systems were placed, making it impossible for any intruder to break through, but Valtor somehow made his way through and got it.Jordan further explained that the cells in that chemical could literally kill anything, and this process works slowly. With this, Nathan knew for certain that Sophia would die, and he couldn't do anything to stop it. Grief piled inside him, the pain evident on his face, the pain of losing someone he loved. Even though she was his enemy before, he couldn't shove the
