“Gavin,” Mrs. Moore—the principal called out. “Angela has accused you of stealing the fundraiser money. Do you have anything to say in your defense?”

Gavin clenched his fists. “I didn’t do it,” he said firmly, his voice trembling as he spoke. “I would never steal.”

Angela straightened in her chair, her face a mask of innocence. “I’m not lying, Mrs. Moore. I saw him take the money. If you don’t believe me, you can call Austin in. He saw it too.”

Mrs. Moore raised an eyebrow and pressed the intercom. “Austin Smith, please come to the principal’s office immediately.”

Moments later, Austin walked in, his face lighting up when he saw Angela. He flashed her a smirk before turning to Mrs. Moore. “You needed me, Principal Moore?”

“Yes, Austin,” Mrs. Moore said. “Angela claims you witnessed Gavin stealing the fundraiser money. Is that true?”

Austin glanced at Gavin, his smirk widening. “Oh, absolutely. I saw him take it with my own eyes. He thought no one was watching, but I caught him red-handed. I even told him to put it back, but you know Gavin—he never listens.”

“That’s a lie!” Gavin shouted, his voice breaking. He turned to Mrs. Moore. “I saw Austin steal the money. I didn’t say anything because I hoped he’d come clean on his own. I even confronted him about it and told him to do the right thing!”

Mrs. Moore’s eyes narrowed. “You’re accusing Austin now? Convenient timing, don’t you think? Why didn’t you report this earlier, Gavin?”

“I thought...” Gavin hesitated, before speaking.

“I thought he would confess.” Gavin finally said recalling the event. It was a week ago, and he had come to drop a file in the teacher’s lounge when he saw Austin sneaking out and holding an envelope.

Now, Austin was putting the blame on him. He wasn’t surprised it was typical Austin always trying to ruin his life.

Mrs. Moore sighed and her action made Gavin stare at her.

“This is a serious accusation, Gavin. But Angela and Austin’s testimonies leave me with no choice but to believe them.”

She leaned forward, her voice cold. “You have 24 hours to pay back the stolen money. If you don’t, you’ll be expelled, and your record will reflect this incident. Other schools in the district will be informed, making it nearly impossible for you to transfer or get into any schools.”

Gavin’s heart sank. “Please, Mrs. Moore,” he begged. “I didn’t take the money. You can’t do this to me. I swear I’m telling the truth.”

“Get out of my office,” Mrs. Moore snapped.

Gavin’s shoulders sagged as he turned to leave. Tears burned in his eyes, but he refused to let them fall. When he stepped out into the hallway, he froze.

Angela and Austin were standing a few feet away, laughing and whispering to each other. Angela’s smile was radiant, her demeanor far removed from the somber act she’d put on in the office.

Before Gavin could process the scene, Austin pulled Angela close and kissed her, his hand resting possessively on her waist.

Gavin’s stomach twisted, during that moment he approached them.

“How could you do this to me, Angela?” He said the minute he got closer.

Angela turned to him, her smile fading into a look of disgust.

“What are you talking about, Gavin?” she asked coolly.

“You know I didn’t steal that money,” Gavin said. “You know I’m not that kind of person.”

Angela crossed her arms. “Well, maybe I don’t know you as well as I thought. All I know is you’re a thief.”

“That’s not true, and you know it!” Gavin said, his voice rising. “Why are you lying? Why are you doing this?”

Angela rolled her eyes. “I don’t care, Gavin. I don’t care about you that’s why I did this. I also don’t want anything to do with you anymore. I’d rather be with Austin—the real son of the Smiths. Not some... adopted nonsense.”

Gavin staggered back as if struck. “Is this you dumping me?” he asked, in a low voice.

Austin stepped forward, grinning smugly. “Are you deaf? Of course, she’s dumping your sorry ass. She’s too good for you, and she knows it.”

Gavin shook his head, unable to believe what he just heard. This couldn’t be the Angels he knew.

“Angela, is he blackmailing you? Is that what this is about? Because I know you wouldn’t act like this—this isn’t you.” He voiced out.

He stepped closer, trying to reach for her, but Austin shoved him hard. Gavin fell backward, hitting the ground with a thud. His head spun, and a sharp tingling sensation shot through his body.

“Stay down where you belong,” Austin sneered, standing over him.

Gavin tried to push himself up, but the tingling feeling intensified, spreading through his limbs. His vision blurred, and his strength drained away.

During that moment he heard a sound.

The morning sun spilled through the schoolyard as students hurried in, backpacks bouncing, and their laughter and chatter filling the air. Gavin walked through the gates, wearing a calm expression. He had long since mastered the art of looking like nothing bothered him, even when his mind was heavy. After he had spent the night thinking of the documents. As Gavin glided into the school building he noticed Austin staring. Not the usual glance, but a sharp, strange look, like Austin was trying to read Gavin’s thoughts. Gavin stepped right up to him.“Keep staring and I will hurt you the same way you tried to hurt me.” Gavin said. “Trust me I wouldn’t miss like you did.”Austin straightened, smirking in that careless way he always did when he felt cornered. “You think you scare me?”Gavin didn’t bother replying. He just looked him in the eyes, then turned and walked away. His silence was heavier than any comeback Austin could think of. And maybe that was why Austin stayed rooted to t

Gavin paced around Harrison’s room like a lunatic. The smell of coffee Harrison had just brewed danced around his nostrils. Gavin paid no attention to it as his eyes moved towards the light from a single lamp shining over a clutter on the dressing table where folders had been fanned out like evidence at a crime scene. Harrison sat hunched at the table, sleeves rolled, eyes scanning a sheaf of papers Gavin had printed with the tight concentration of someone who hadn’t slept in months. The minute he straightened Gavin paused. “Found anything?”“Not yet,” he said. “But I’m a bit curious though,”“About what?”“I heard gunshots when you were at the smith’s residence, and with the way the ear piece had disconnected it sounded like the gun was aimed at you, like Austin had shot you.”Gavin dropped to the seat close to Harrison wearing the most casual expression even though his heart was running a mile. He had a feeling Gavin would catch up to the truth about him, sooner than he expe

Gavin stared at Austin. His eyes were sharp, narrowed like he was trying to burn a hole through his head.“You know, you’ve balls showing up in the house of the man that almost made you see the afterlife ,” Austin said, stepping closer. Gavin could see him quiver, he was afraid of course he was. He had witnessed him being shot, only to see him stand in front of him completely unharmed. That was enough to shake a person.“You had a good opening, Austin. You just had to ruin it with shitty dialogue.” Gavin said, using Austin’s fear to his advantage. “But I understand the reason you said something so shitty. You’re afraid.”“I’m not afraid of you.” He spoke through clenched teeth. Gavin’s hands hung at his sides. “I can see it in your eyes.”Austin let out a short, emotionless chuckle, trying to look tough but his shaky hands gave him away too quickly.“All you can see is defiance, a sign that you are nothing but a fly hanging around my shoulder.”Austin’s face tightened further. “My

Gavin stood in the middle of the alley, his hands clenched into fists, his heart pounding hard in his chest. He didn’t know why he hadn’t walked away already. Maybe he should have. Maybe he still could. But his feet wouldn’t move. His eyes were locked on Angela, who was still being held by the man with the gun. “Don’t do anything stupid,” the man warned, with a sharp voice. Then he raised his gun and pointed it straight at Gavin’s chest. “This is not the time to play hero. Leave. Or I’ll shoot you.” Gavin didn’t move. He couldn’t. His eyes flickered to Angela—her face was pale, and her eyes were wide with fear. Her mouth opened slightly, like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out. She looked so scared, so helpless. Gavin’s heart twisted in his chest. “I said leave!” the man shouted. Still, Gavin stood there. The man turned suddenly, grabbing Angela harder and dragging her further down the alley. She screamed, her feet kicking as she tried to break free. “Let go of

  • Chapter 19: At Crossroads

The sun had completely disappeared from the sky, when Gavin dropped Harrison off. The streets were mostly quiet, painted in orange and blue shadows. As they pulled into the driveway, Harrison let out a dramatic sigh. “Home sweet chaos.” Gavin glanced at the empty front porch. “Your mom’s not home?” “She’s probably off with her pathetic woman’s club,” Harrison said, rolling his eyes. “Last week they met to talk about decorative spoons for a council meeting.” They both laughed and the minute their thunderous laughter died down. Harrison turned to look at his friend. “Do you mind coming in? It would be so boring staying here alone!” Gavin nudged. “I’m always open to curing boredom.” Harrison smiled as they both stepped inside. The familiar smell of lavender and old books hit Gavin’s noise and he couldn’t help but welcome it. It smelt homely. Harrison led Gavin upstairs to his room, which was a typical mix of genius and mess. There were tools, wires, comic books, and a few empty c
