Mr. Smith grabbed Gavin by the collar when got closer.

“Don’t ever talk to me in that manner!” he bellowed, his voice echoing through the living room.

Gavin stared back at him, his jaw tight but his lips sealed. He knew there was no reasoning with Mr. Smith when he was like this.

Mr. Smith tightened his grip, shaking Gavin slightly. “I’ll ask you one last time. Where have you been?”

Before Gavin could respond, Austin entered the room with his trademark smirk.

“Dad, I’m sure Gavin was out there stealing again,” he said, his tone smug. “Did you know he took money from the school fundraiser and then returned twice as much after Principal Moore threatened to kick him out?”

“What?” Mrs. Smith appeared in the doorway. “What’s going on?”

Austin gestured toward the driveway. “Mom, have you seen the bike parked outside? That’s Gavin’s. And if you ask him I’m sure he won’t say where he got the money to buy it.”

Mrs. Smith’s eyes narrowed as she turned to Gavin. “Is that true? Is that bike yours?”

Gavin nodded, still not saying a word.

“Where did you get the money to buy something like that, and where have you fucking been?” Mrs. Smith demanded.

Before Gavin could explain, Austin chimed in again. “See? He won’t answer because he’s guilty. I’m telling you, we have a thief under our roof.”

Mrs. Smith frowned. “Do you remember the money missing from the safe last week? What if Gavin is behind that too?”

“That’s enough!” Gavin finally said, his voice rising in frustration. “I didn’t—”

“Shut up!” Mr. Smith barked, his face contorted in rage. “You think you can talk back to me? After stealing from us? I’m going to make you regret ever stepping foot in this house.”

Before Gavin could defend himself further, Mr. Smith’s fist connected with his face, sending him stumbling backward.

“Dad, stop!” Gavin yelled, holding up his arms to shield himself. “I didn’t do anything!”

But Mr. Smith wasn’t listening. He landed blow after blow, his anger blinding him. Gavin tried to back away, but Mr. Smith strikes were relentless.

When Mr. Smith finally stepped back, his chest heaving, he pointed at Gavin with trembling fingers.

“You’re a disgrace,” he spat. “You’ll never steal from me or this family again. Lock him in his room.”

Mr. Smith called out to one of the house security guards. Two burly men appeared and grabbed Gavin by the arms.

“Lock him in there for a week,” Mr. Smith commanded. “No food, no water. Let him starve to death for all I care.”

Gavin struggled against the guards as they began dragging him away. His heart pounded in his chest, panic setting in.

Suddenly, a voice echoed in his mind.

Gavin blinked, his vision shifting. It was as if everything around him slowed down.

He could see the guards’ movements before they happened, and a voice in his head directed him.

“Move to the left,” the system instructed, and Gavin did so instinctively, slipping out of the first guard’s grip.

“Strike now,” the voice urged, and Gavin spun, landing a sharp elbow to the second guard’s jaw. The man stumbled back, groaning in pain.

Mr. Smith stared in disbelief as Gavin fought off the guards with a strength he’d never shown before.

“What the hell are you doing?!” Mr. Smith roared.

Gavin didn’t answer. He moved swiftly, taking down the guards one by one until they were sprawled on the floor, groaning and clutching their injuries.

Austin, seeing the chaos, rushed toward Gavin.

“You’re not going anywhere!” he shouted, lunging at him.

But Gavin was ready. He sidestepped Austin’s attack and delivered a punch to his stomach, doubling him over.

“That’s for lying about me to everyone,” Gavin said coldly.

He grabbed Austin by the collar and landed another punch squarely on his jaw. “That’s for stealing my girlfriend.”

Austin stumbled back, clutching his face, but Gavin wasn’t done.

He stepped forward and delivered one final blow that sent Austin crashing to the ground.

“And that’s for humiliating me,” Gavin said.

The room was silent except for the groans of the guards and Austin. Gavin turned to see the shocked faces of Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

“I’m only sparing the both of you because you’re old.” He said glaring at them.

Without another word, he stormed out of the house and jumped onto his bike. The engine roared to life, and Gavin sped off into the night, leaving the house—and the chaos—behind him.

As the wind whipped past him, Gavin felt a strange sense of freedom. For the first time in years, he wasn’t the victim. He had fought back, and it felt incredible.

The system’s voice echoed in his mind, and Gavin couldn’t help but smile. This was only the beginning.

The morning sun spilled through the schoolyard as students hurried in, backpacks bouncing, and their laughter and chatter filling the air. Gavin walked through the gates, wearing a calm expression. He had long since mastered the art of looking like nothing bothered him, even when his mind was heavy. After he had spent the night thinking of the documents. As Gavin glided into the school building he noticed Austin staring. Not the usual glance, but a sharp, strange look, like Austin was trying to read Gavin’s thoughts. Gavin stepped right up to him.“Keep staring and I will hurt you the same way you tried to hurt me.” Gavin said. “Trust me I wouldn’t miss like you did.”Austin straightened, smirking in that careless way he always did when he felt cornered. “You think you scare me?”Gavin didn’t bother replying. He just looked him in the eyes, then turned and walked away. His silence was heavier than any comeback Austin could think of. And maybe that was why Austin stayed rooted to t

Gavin paced around Harrison’s room like a lunatic. The smell of coffee Harrison had just brewed danced around his nostrils. Gavin paid no attention to it as his eyes moved towards the light from a single lamp shining over a clutter on the dressing table where folders had been fanned out like evidence at a crime scene. Harrison sat hunched at the table, sleeves rolled, eyes scanning a sheaf of papers Gavin had printed with the tight concentration of someone who hadn’t slept in months. The minute he straightened Gavin paused. “Found anything?”“Not yet,” he said. “But I’m a bit curious though,”“About what?”“I heard gunshots when you were at the smith’s residence, and with the way the ear piece had disconnected it sounded like the gun was aimed at you, like Austin had shot you.”Gavin dropped to the seat close to Harrison wearing the most casual expression even though his heart was running a mile. He had a feeling Gavin would catch up to the truth about him, sooner than he expe

Gavin stared at Austin. His eyes were sharp, narrowed like he was trying to burn a hole through his head.“You know, you’ve balls showing up in the house of the man that almost made you see the afterlife ,” Austin said, stepping closer. Gavin could see him quiver, he was afraid of course he was. He had witnessed him being shot, only to see him stand in front of him completely unharmed. That was enough to shake a person.“You had a good opening, Austin. You just had to ruin it with shitty dialogue.” Gavin said, using Austin’s fear to his advantage. “But I understand the reason you said something so shitty. You’re afraid.”“I’m not afraid of you.” He spoke through clenched teeth. Gavin’s hands hung at his sides. “I can see it in your eyes.”Austin let out a short, emotionless chuckle, trying to look tough but his shaky hands gave him away too quickly.“All you can see is defiance, a sign that you are nothing but a fly hanging around my shoulder.”Austin’s face tightened further. “My

Gavin stood in the middle of the alley, his hands clenched into fists, his heart pounding hard in his chest. He didn’t know why he hadn’t walked away already. Maybe he should have. Maybe he still could. But his feet wouldn’t move. His eyes were locked on Angela, who was still being held by the man with the gun. “Don’t do anything stupid,” the man warned, with a sharp voice. Then he raised his gun and pointed it straight at Gavin’s chest. “This is not the time to play hero. Leave. Or I’ll shoot you.” Gavin didn’t move. He couldn’t. His eyes flickered to Angela—her face was pale, and her eyes were wide with fear. Her mouth opened slightly, like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out. She looked so scared, so helpless. • Chapter 19: At Crossroads

The sun had completely disappeared from the sky, when Gavin dropped Harrison off. The streets were mostly quiet, painted in orange and blue shadows. As they pulled into the driveway, Harrison let out a dramatic sigh. “Home sweet chaos.” Gavin glanced at the empty front porch. “Your mom’s not home?” “She’s probably off with her pathetic woman’s club,” Harrison said, rolling his eyes. “Last week they met to talk about decorative spoons for a council meeting.” They both laughed and the minute their thunderous laughter died down. Harrison turned to look at his friend. “Do you mind coming in? It would be so boring staying here alone!” Gavin nudged. “I’m always open to curing boredom.” Harrison smiled as they both stepped inside. The familiar smell of lavender and old books hit Gavin’s noise and he couldn’t help but welcome it. It smelt homely. Harrison led Gavin upstairs to his room, which was a typical mix of genius and mess. There were tools, wires, comic books, and a few empty c
