“Gavin!”

The sound of his name made him stop in his tracks. He turned to see Angela standing a few feet away.

“What do you want?” Gavin asked, his tone was cold and distant.

Angela approached him, her heels clicking against the tiled floor.

“Austin told me you just paid back the fundraiser money,” she said, crossing her arms. “Is it true?”

“Yes, it’s true,” Gavin replied curtly, already turning to leave. “Now stop bothering me. I have somewhere to be.”

Angela grabbed his arm, forcing him to face her. “Where did you get that kind of money?”

Gavin yanked his arm free and glared at her. “I don’t owe you any answers, especially after you dumped me in front of everyone. Why don’t you go ask Austin? Isn’t he your new favorite person?”

Her face twisted in anger. “I was just trying to have a conversation—”

“A conversation?” Gavin snapped, his voice rising. “You humiliated me, lied about me, and called me a thief. You don’t get to act like we’re on good terms. Get out of my way useless bitch.”

People nearby turned to watch the escalating argument, their whispers filling the hallway. Angela noticed the attention and her cheeks turned red with embarrassment.

“You’re going to regret this, Gavin,” she hissed before spinning on her heel and storming away.

Gavin ignored the stares and whispers, focusing instead on the ticking timer. Angela’s threats were empty compared to the satisfaction of completing his mission.

Once school ended, Gavin hopped on a bus and headed downtown.

He had one destination in mind—a luxury motorbike store. Ever since he’d first seen the Ultra Speed Bike 2000, he’d dreamed of owning it. It was sleek, fast, and way out of his price range—until now.

When Gavin arrived at the store, he felt a rush of excitement.

The shiny bikes on display gleamed under the showroom lights, and the Ultra Speed Bike 2000 stood at the center like a masterpiece.

He approached the counter, where a middle-aged salesman stood, chatting with two younger staff members.

“I want to buy the Ultra Speed Bike 2000,” Gavin said confidently.

The salesman turned to him and gave him a once-over, his lips curling into a sneer. “You want to buy that bike?” he asked adding a little weird laugh.

“Yes,” Gavin said firmly.

The salesman continued chuckling , shaking his head.

“Look, kid, I’ve seen your type before. You come in here pretending you’re going to buy something, wasting my time, and then try to take something when I’m not looking. If you don’t leave now, I’m calling security.”

“I’m not here to do any of that,” Gavin said, trying to keep his voice calm. “I have the money to buy it. Just let me make the payment.”

“Sure you do,” the man said mockingly. “Why don’t you go play pretend somewhere else?”

“Please,” Gavin pleaded. “I’m serious. Just let me pay the money.”

The salesman laughed again and motioned to his staff. “Boys, keep an eye on this one. He’s trouble.”

Gavin’s patience wore thin.

“Fine,” he snapped. “If I can’t pay the money, you can call security and throw me out—or hand me over to the police. Deal?”

The salesman frowned, clearly surprised by Gavin’s confidence.

“Alright, kid,” he said reluctantly. “Let’s see this so-called money.”

Gavin pulled out his card, and swiped it across the device the salesman handed to him.

Moments later, the device buzzed, and his eyes widened as he read the amount.

“$1 million...” he whispered, his face pale.

“Believe me now?” Gavin asked with a smirk.

The man straightened up.

“My deepest apologies, sir,” he stammered. “I didn’t mean to insult you. Boys, get the Ultra Speed Bike 2000 ready for this gentleman!”

As the staff scrambled to prepare the bike, Gavin heard the familiar voice of the system.

[Revenge system: Quest completed.]

[Reward acquired: $2 million has been added to user account for free spending.]

Gavin smiled as he heard the voice of the system.

[Revenge system: Fighting skill acquired.]

The words sent a thrill through him. He clenched his fists, feeling a newfound strength coursing through his body.

“This system is insane,” he muttered under his breath, but he couldn’t deny how much he was enjoying it.

Minutes later, the Ultra Speed Bike 2000 was ready.

Gavin climbed onto it, revving the engine and yelling as he heard the powerful roar.

He waved off the salesman’s apologies, riding out of the store with a wide grin on his face.

He spent the next hour cruising around town, the wind whipping through his hair as he tested the bike’s speed.

***

When Gavin finally returned home, his good mood vanished the moment he stepped into the living room. Mr. Smith was sitting on the couch, his arms crossed and his face cold and stern.

“Where have you been?” Mr. Smith demanded.

Gavin froze, gripping the keys to his new bike tightly. He could feel the weight of Mr. Smith’s anger bearing down on him.

“Out,” he said cautiously.

“Out?” Mr. Smith repeated, standing up slowly. “What do you mean, ‘out’? You think you can just come and go as you please?”

“I didn’t realize I needed your permission,” Gavin muttered under his breath.

“What did you just say?” Mr. Smith snapped, his voice rising.

Gavin looked up, meeting his adoptive father’s furious gaze. For the first time, he didn’t feel intimidated. The revenge system had given him more than just money and skills—it had given him confidence.

“I said I didn’t realize I needed your permission,” Gavin repeated, his voice louder this time.

Mr. Smith’s face turned red with anger.

“You ungrateful little brat,” he growled. “You think you can talk to me like that after everything I’ve done for you?”

Gavin clenched his fists, watching as Mr.smith charged at him. He knew he was in deep trouble.

The morning sun spilled through the schoolyard as students hurried in, backpacks bouncing, and their laughter and chatter filling the air. Gavin walked through the gates, wearing a calm expression. He had long since mastered the art of looking like nothing bothered him, even when his mind was heavy. After he had spent the night thinking of the documents. As Gavin glided into the school building he noticed Austin staring. Not the usual glance, but a sharp, strange look, like Austin was trying to read Gavin’s thoughts. Gavin stepped right up to him.“Keep staring and I will hurt you the same way you tried to hurt me.” Gavin said. “Trust me I wouldn’t miss like you did.”Austin straightened, smirking in that careless way he always did when he felt cornered. “You think you scare me?”Gavin didn’t bother replying. He just looked him in the eyes, then turned and walked away. His silence was heavier than any comeback Austin could think of. And maybe that was why Austin stayed rooted to t

Gavin paced around Harrison’s room like a lunatic. The smell of coffee Harrison had just brewed danced around his nostrils. Gavin paid no attention to it as his eyes moved towards the light from a single lamp shining over a clutter on the dressing table where folders had been fanned out like evidence at a crime scene. Harrison sat hunched at the table, sleeves rolled, eyes scanning a sheaf of papers Gavin had printed with the tight concentration of someone who hadn’t slept in months. The minute he straightened Gavin paused. “Found anything?”“Not yet,” he said. “But I’m a bit curious though,”“About what?”“I heard gunshots when you were at the smith’s residence, and with the way the ear piece had disconnected it sounded like the gun was aimed at you, like Austin had shot you.”Gavin dropped to the seat close to Harrison wearing the most casual expression even though his heart was running a mile. He had a feeling Gavin would catch up to the truth about him, sooner than he expe

Gavin stared at Austin. His eyes were sharp, narrowed like he was trying to burn a hole through his head.“You know, you’ve balls showing up in the house of the man that almost made you see the afterlife ,” Austin said, stepping closer. Gavin could see him quiver, he was afraid of course he was. He had witnessed him being shot, only to see him stand in front of him completely unharmed. That was enough to shake a person.“You had a good opening, Austin. You just had to ruin it with shitty dialogue.” Gavin said, using Austin’s fear to his advantage. “But I understand the reason you said something so shitty. You’re afraid.”“I’m not afraid of you.” He spoke through clenched teeth. Gavin’s hands hung at his sides. “I can see it in your eyes.”Austin let out a short, emotionless chuckle, trying to look tough but his shaky hands gave him away too quickly.“All you can see is defiance, a sign that you are nothing but a fly hanging around my shoulder.”Austin’s face tightened further. “My

Gavin stood in the middle of the alley, his hands clenched into fists, his heart pounding hard in his chest. He didn’t know why he hadn’t walked away already. Maybe he should have. Maybe he still could. But his feet wouldn’t move. His eyes were locked on Angela, who was still being held by the man with the gun. “Don’t do anything stupid,” the man warned, with a sharp voice. Then he raised his gun and pointed it straight at Gavin’s chest. “This is not the time to play hero. Leave. Or I’ll shoot you.” Gavin didn’t move. He couldn’t. His eyes flickered to Angela—her face was pale, and her eyes were wide with fear. Her mouth opened slightly, like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out. She looked so scared, so helpless. • Chapter 19: At Crossroads

The sun had completely disappeared from the sky, when Gavin dropped Harrison off. The streets were mostly quiet, painted in orange and blue shadows. As they pulled into the driveway, Harrison let out a dramatic sigh. “Home sweet chaos.” Gavin glanced at the empty front porch. “Your mom’s not home?” “She’s probably off with her pathetic woman’s club,” Harrison said, rolling his eyes. “Last week they met to talk about decorative spoons for a council meeting.” They both laughed and the minute their thunderous laughter died down. Harrison turned to look at his friend. “Do you mind coming in? It would be so boring staying here alone!” Gavin nudged. “I’m always open to curing boredom.” Harrison smiled as they both stepped inside. The familiar smell of lavender and old books hit Gavin’s noise and he couldn’t help but welcome it. It smelt homely. Harrison led Gavin upstairs to his room, which was a typical mix of genius and mess. There were tools, wires, comic books, and a few empty c
