Gavin parked his bike in the shadows of a quiet alley. The sound of the engine faded, leaving him alone with his thoughts.

The adrenaline from his escape earlier still coursed through his veins. He ran a hand through his hair, looking around for a place to settle for the night. The nearest hotel was still pretty far.

Gavin was about to get on his bike when he heard the familiar, mechanical voice in his head.

Gavin frowned, his brows furrowing in confusion.

"What does that even mean?" he muttered under his breath. His eyes scanned the alley, expecting something—or someone—to appear. But the space was as empty as before.

"Is this about going back home?" he asked aloud. "Am I supposed to fight Mr. Smith, Austin, and the guards?"

The system didn’t respond, leaving Gavin with silence and his own uncertainty.

It was then that he noticed movement further down the alley. A man in a suit stood surrounded by a group of men, their faces hidden by hoods and shadows.

One of the thugs held a knife to the man’s throat while another wrenched a briefcase from his hands.

“Hand it over, old man,” one of them growled.

The suited man stammered, his voice trembling. “P-please, just take the money and leave me alone.”

Gavin's fists clenched. His earlier confusion was replaced by a clarity. He left his bike and stepped forward.

“Hey!” he called out, his voice echoing through the alley.

The group turned, their eyes locking on him. The thug holding the knife smirked.

“What do we have here? A wannabe hero?”

“Leave him alone,” Gavin demanded, stepping closer.

The men exchanged glances before bursting into laughter. “And what are you gonna do, kid?” one of them sneered.

Gavin’s heart pounded, but he squared his shoulders. "You don’t want to find out."

The leader of the group took a step forward, cracking his knuckles. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”

Before Gavin could respond, the system's voice rang in his ears.

[Revenge System: Initiating fight mode.]

His vision shifted, the world around him slowing down. He could see their movements before they made them, the system guiding him like an unseen mentor.

The first thug lunged, his fist aiming for Gavin’s face. Gavin sidestepped effortlessly, delivering a sharp elbow to the man’s ribs. The thug groaned, collapsing to the ground.

Another one came at him with a metal pipe. “You’re dead, kid!”

The system's voice instructed, *“Duck now.”

Gavin dropped low, the pipe swinging harmlessly above him. He countered with a swift uppercut, sending the thug sprawling backward.

The fight continued, with Gavin taking on each opponent with his skill. Every punch, kick, and dodge felt like second nature, as though his body had been trained for this moment.

Finally, the last thug fell, clutching his stomach and groaning in pain. The suited man stared at Gavin, his eyes wide with shock.

Gavin felt a wave of satisfaction as the system announced his victory. He turned to the man, extending a hand to help him up.

“Are you okay?” Gavin asked.

The man nodded, brushing off his suit. “Thanks to you, yes. You saved my life.” He adjusted his tie and extended his hand. “I’m Mr. Tyler. And you are?”

“Gavin,” he replied, shaking the man’s hand.

Mr. Tyler’s eyes gleamed as he spoke. “How can I ever repay you, Gavin?”

Gavin bent down, picking up the man’s briefcase and handing it back. As he did, a business card fell from the man’s pocket. Gavin glanced at it—a sleek card that read: Tyler Realty, Top Realtor in Town.

Gavin hesitated for a moment before speaking. “Actually, I might have a favor to ask.”

“Name it,” Mr. Tyler said without hesitation.

“I need a place to stay. Somewhere decent. I’ll pay, no matter the cost,” Gavin explained. “I got kicked out of my home.”

Mr. Tyler’s expression softened. “Kicked out? A young man like you? That’s outrageous.” He thought for a moment before nodding. “Come with me. I might have just the thing.”

Gavin followed him on his bike as Mr. Tyler drove through the city. They finally stopped in front of a sleek, modern condo building.

The place looked luxurious, far beyond anything Gavin thought he could afford.

Mr. Tyler led him inside and up to a spacious unit with polished floors, high ceilings, and large windows that overlooked the city skyline.

“This unit was scheduled to go on the market tomorrow,” Mr. Tyler explained, handing Gavin the keys. “But for you, I’ll offer it at half the price. Consider it my way of saying thank you for saving my life.”

Gavin’s eyes widened as he took in the space. “Are you serious? This place is incredible.”

Mr. Tyler smiled. “I’m the one who should be thanking you. Without you, I wouldn’t be here right now.”

Gavin shook his hand again. “Thank you. Really.”

After finalizing some basic details, Mr. Tyler left, promising to return the next day to wrap up the paperwork. Gavin closed the door behind him and leaned against it, a smile spreading across his face.

The condo was fully furnished, complete with a state-of-the-art kitchen, a cozy living room, and a plush bed in the bedroom. He explored every corner, marveling at his new home.

As he finally settled into bed, exhaustion washed over him. He was about to close his eyes when his phone buzzed.

Gavin pulled out his device, and he saw it was a message from the school group. The moment he clicked on it. His eyes grew in shock.

“Angela.” He growled. “I’m going to kill that bitch.”

The morning sun spilled through the schoolyard as students hurried in, backpacks bouncing, and their laughter and chatter filling the air. Gavin walked through the gates, wearing a calm expression. He had long since mastered the art of looking like nothing bothered him, even when his mind was heavy. After he had spent the night thinking of the documents. As Gavin glided into the school building he noticed Austin staring. Not the usual glance, but a sharp, strange look, like Austin was trying to read Gavin’s thoughts. Gavin stepped right up to him.“Keep staring and I will hurt you the same way you tried to hurt me.” Gavin said. “Trust me I wouldn’t miss like you did.”Austin straightened, smirking in that careless way he always did when he felt cornered. “You think you scare me?”Gavin didn’t bother replying. He just looked him in the eyes, then turned and walked away. His silence was heavier than any comeback Austin could think of. And maybe that was why Austin stayed rooted to t

Gavin paced around Harrison’s room like a lunatic. The smell of coffee Harrison had just brewed danced around his nostrils. Gavin paid no attention to it as his eyes moved towards the light from a single lamp shining over a clutter on the dressing table where folders had been fanned out like evidence at a crime scene. Harrison sat hunched at the table, sleeves rolled, eyes scanning a sheaf of papers Gavin had printed with the tight concentration of someone who hadn’t slept in months. The minute he straightened Gavin paused. “Found anything?”“Not yet,” he said. “But I’m a bit curious though,”“About what?”“I heard gunshots when you were at the smith’s residence, and with the way the ear piece had disconnected it sounded like the gun was aimed at you, like Austin had shot you.”Gavin dropped to the seat close to Harrison wearing the most casual expression even though his heart was running a mile. He had a feeling Gavin would catch up to the truth about him, sooner than he expe

Gavin stared at Austin. His eyes were sharp, narrowed like he was trying to burn a hole through his head.“You know, you’ve balls showing up in the house of the man that almost made you see the afterlife ,” Austin said, stepping closer. Gavin could see him quiver, he was afraid of course he was. He had witnessed him being shot, only to see him stand in front of him completely unharmed. That was enough to shake a person.“You had a good opening, Austin. You just had to ruin it with shitty dialogue.” Gavin said, using Austin’s fear to his advantage. “But I understand the reason you said something so shitty. You’re afraid.”“I’m not afraid of you.” He spoke through clenched teeth. Gavin’s hands hung at his sides. “I can see it in your eyes.”Austin let out a short, emotionless chuckle, trying to look tough but his shaky hands gave him away too quickly.“All you can see is defiance, a sign that you are nothing but a fly hanging around my shoulder.”Austin’s face tightened further. “My

Gavin stood in the middle of the alley, his hands clenched into fists, his heart pounding hard in his chest. He didn’t know why he hadn’t walked away already. Maybe he should have. Maybe he still could. But his feet wouldn’t move. His eyes were locked on Angela, who was still being held by the man with the gun. “Don’t do anything stupid,” the man warned, with a sharp voice. Then he raised his gun and pointed it straight at Gavin’s chest. “This is not the time to play hero. Leave. Or I’ll shoot you.” Gavin didn’t move. He couldn’t. His eyes flickered to Angela—her face was pale, and her eyes were wide with fear. Her mouth opened slightly, like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out. She looked so scared, so helpless. • Chapter 19: At Crossroads

The sun had completely disappeared from the sky, when Gavin dropped Harrison off. The streets were mostly quiet, painted in orange and blue shadows. As they pulled into the driveway, Harrison let out a dramatic sigh. “Home sweet chaos.” Gavin glanced at the empty front porch. “Your mom’s not home?” “She’s probably off with her pathetic woman’s club,” Harrison said, rolling his eyes. “Last week they met to talk about decorative spoons for a council meeting.” They both laughed and the minute their thunderous laughter died down. Harrison turned to look at his friend. “Do you mind coming in? It would be so boring staying here alone!” Gavin nudged. “I’m always open to curing boredom.” Harrison smiled as they both stepped inside. The familiar smell of lavender and old books hit Gavin’s noise and he couldn’t help but welcome it. It smelt homely. Harrison led Gavin upstairs to his room, which was a typical mix of genius and mess. There were tools, wires, comic books, and a few empty c
