Gavin wiped the dripping milk from his eyes, his hand shaking as he stared at Ethan. The smug smirk on Ethan’s face made Gavin’s blood boil.

“Pig! Pig! Pig!” Ethan began to chant, his voice loud and mocking.

The rest of the cafeteria quickly joined in, their taunts echoing off the walls. “Pig! Pig! Pig!”

Gavin’s chest tightened. He took a step forward, and the crowd grew quieter, sensing something was about to happen.

In the heat of the moment, Gavin raised his hand and slapped Ethan across the face. The sound cut through the room like a whip, silencing everyone.

Ethan stumbled back, holding his cheek. His shock quickly morphed into fury.

“You’re gonna regret that,” he spat.

Before Ethan could react further, Gavin delivered a punch to his nose, sending him reeling backward.

The system’s voice echoed in Gavin’s mind.

Guided by the system, Gavin followed up with a third blow, catching Ethan square in the jaw.

“Stop!” one of Ethan’s friends—Chase yelled, stepping forward to intervene.

But Ethan held up a hand, wiping blood from his split lip. “No,” he growled. “This is my fight.”

Ethan lunged at Gavin, throwing a wild punch, but Gavin sidestepped it with ease, the system directing his movements.

Before Gavin could counter, a sharp voice rang out. “Enough!”

The crowd parted, and Principal Moore stormed into the cafeteria with an angry look on her face.

“Ethan Brook. Gavin Smith. To my office. Now!”

Both boys hesitated, glaring at each other before reluctantly following her.

In Principal Moore’s office, both boys sat across from her, shooting glares at each other.

As principal Moore opened her mouth to speak Gavin and Ethan yelled like little kids.

“He started it!” they both exclaimed at the same time.

Principal Moore held up a hand. “I don’t want to hear it. I saw enough to know you were both involved. Detention after school—for both of you.”

Ethan protested immediately. “But Principal Moore, I have training! Missing it will mess up my position on the team.”

“One day won’t ruin your career, Mr. Brook,” she said firmly. “Now, get out of my office.”

They left, and Ethan’s friends immediately surrounded him in the hallway.

“You good, man?” one of them asked.

Ethan glared at them, his face still bruised. “I got detention. Because of him.” He pointed at Gavin, who was already walking away. “I’m not going to rest until Gavin smith gets what he deserves.”

Detention was a new experience for Gavin. This was actually his first and he hated it.The room was silent except for the scratching of pencils and the occasional cough. He sat alone, staring out the window, wishing the clock would move faster.

A boy from another grade approached him, a wide grin on his face. “Dude, the way you took down Ethan was incredible! Where’d you learn to fight like that?”

Gavin shrugged, pretending to be nonchalant. “I train a lot,” he lied.

The boy nodded in awe before heading back to his seat.

Gavin glanced over at Ethan, who sat a few rows away, glaring at him. Every so often, Ethan muttered something under his breath, but Gavin ignored him.

Finally, Gavin leaned back and smirked. “How’s your nose, Ethan? Still bleeding in defeat?”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “You think this is over? You’re gonna regret it.”

“Oh, I’m scared,” Gavin replied mockingly.

Ethan shot to his feet, but the teacher in charge snapped, “Mr. Brook! Sit down unless you want more detention!”

Ethan sank back into his chair, his face red with frustration. Gavin chuckled to himself, enjoying the small victory.

When detention finally ended, Gavin grabbed his bag and headed toward the school’s exit. But as he passed the restroom, loud screams caught his attention.

He stopped and listened. The murmurs grew louder, more frantic.

As Gavin pushed open the door to the restroom what he saw made his blood run cold.

The morning sun spilled through the schoolyard as students hurried in, backpacks bouncing, and their laughter and chatter filling the air. Gavin walked through the gates, wearing a calm expression. He had long since mastered the art of looking like nothing bothered him, even when his mind was heavy. After he had spent the night thinking of the documents. As Gavin glided into the school building he noticed Austin staring. Not the usual glance, but a sharp, strange look, like Austin was trying to read Gavin’s thoughts. Gavin stepped right up to him.“Keep staring and I will hurt you the same way you tried to hurt me.” Gavin said. “Trust me I wouldn’t miss like you did.”Austin straightened, smirking in that careless way he always did when he felt cornered. “You think you scare me?”Gavin didn’t bother replying. He just looked him in the eyes, then turned and walked away. His silence was heavier than any comeback Austin could think of. And maybe that was why Austin stayed rooted to t

Gavin paced around Harrison’s room like a lunatic. The smell of coffee Harrison had just brewed danced around his nostrils. Gavin paid no attention to it as his eyes moved towards the light from a single lamp shining over a clutter on the dressing table where folders had been fanned out like evidence at a crime scene. Harrison sat hunched at the table, sleeves rolled, eyes scanning a sheaf of papers Gavin had printed with the tight concentration of someone who hadn’t slept in months. The minute he straightened Gavin paused. “Found anything?”“Not yet,” he said. “But I’m a bit curious though,”“About what?”“I heard gunshots when you were at the smith’s residence, and with the way the ear piece had disconnected it sounded like the gun was aimed at you, like Austin had shot you.”Gavin dropped to the seat close to Harrison wearing the most casual expression even though his heart was running a mile. He had a feeling Gavin would catch up to the truth about him, sooner than he expe

Gavin stared at Austin. His eyes were sharp, narrowed like he was trying to burn a hole through his head.“You know, you’ve balls showing up in the house of the man that almost made you see the afterlife ,” Austin said, stepping closer. Gavin could see him quiver, he was afraid of course he was. He had witnessed him being shot, only to see him stand in front of him completely unharmed. That was enough to shake a person.“You had a good opening, Austin. You just had to ruin it with shitty dialogue.” Gavin said, using Austin’s fear to his advantage. “But I understand the reason you said something so shitty. You’re afraid.”“I’m not afraid of you.” He spoke through clenched teeth. Gavin’s hands hung at his sides. “I can see it in your eyes.”Austin let out a short, emotionless chuckle, trying to look tough but his shaky hands gave him away too quickly.“All you can see is defiance, a sign that you are nothing but a fly hanging around my shoulder.”Austin’s face tightened further. “My

Gavin stood in the middle of the alley, his hands clenched into fists, his heart pounding hard in his chest. He didn’t know why he hadn’t walked away already. Maybe he should have. Maybe he still could. But his feet wouldn’t move. His eyes were locked on Angela, who was still being held by the man with the gun. “Don’t do anything stupid,” the man warned, with a sharp voice. Then he raised his gun and pointed it straight at Gavin’s chest. “This is not the time to play hero. Leave. Or I’ll shoot you.” Gavin didn’t move. He couldn’t. The sun had completely disappeared from the sky, when Gavin dropped Harrison off. The streets were mostly quiet, painted in orange and blue shadows. As they pulled into the driveway, Harrison let out a dramatic sigh. “Home sweet chaos.” Gavin glanced at the empty front porch. “Your mom’s not home?” “She’s probably off with her pathetic woman’s club,” Harrison said, rolling his eyes. “Last week they met to talk about decorative spoons for a council meeting.” They both laughed and the minute their thunderous laughter died down. Harrison turned to look at his friend. “Do you mind coming in? It would be so boring staying here alone!” Gavin nudged. “I’m always open to curing boredom.” Harrison smiled as they both stepped inside. The familiar smell of lavender and old books hit Gavin’s noise and he couldn’t help but welcome it. It smelt homely. Harrison led Gavin upstairs to his room, which was a typical mix of genius and mess. There were tools, wires, comic books, and a few empty c
