Chapter 46

On that fateful night, Vere slept in Olivia's room to provide comfort and keep her company. As Olivia peacefully dozed off, a contented smile played on Vere's lips as he gazed at the person who had once been the cause of him on the brink of death due to a terrible accident. But Olivia was the one who had saved him, giving him a second chance at life and helping him rebuild his life.

The room was dimly lit, and the only sounds that could be heard were the soft whirring of the ceiling fan and Olivia's steady breathing. Vere couldn't help but reflect on the incredible turn of events that had brought them together.

That moment Vere whispered to himself, “It's almost unbelievable the way fate brought us together. I owe Olivia my life, and I wish that I have the opportunity to repay her kindness.”

Vere had fallen asleep on the couch in Olivia's room. When he woke up in the morning, he found that Olivia was not in her bed. He quickly got up from the couch and entered Olivia's room. As he stepped out of the room, Vere was surprised to hear Olivia's voice saying, "Good morning, Mr. Wayne," from the living room, where she was sitting on the floor, reading the newspaper, and wearing a smile.

"Good morning, Olivia," Vere replied, peeking down from the balcony on the second floor. "Thank you for keeping me company last night."

"You're welcome, Mr. Wayne," Olivia said. "You don't need to thank me."

"Come, Mr. Wayne, let's have breakfast. I've already prepared it," Olivia suggested.

"Wow, you woke up early to prepare breakfast," Vere remarked.

At that moment, Vere descended from the second floor of the mansion and made his way to the dining room, where Olivia had set the table with breakfast.

As Vere and Olivia ate, Olivia couldn't help but ask about Mr. Perry. "Mr. Wayne, how did you know about Mr. Perry? Can you tell me more about him and what you know about this rich businessman?"

Vere began to narrate what he knew about Mr. Perry. "As far as I know, Mr. Perry was the first husband of the late Mr. Vere Mendez's wife," Vere explained.

"Really?" Olivia inquired, her curiosity piqued.

“Indeed," Vere replied. On that morning, Olivia and Vere engaged in a lengthy conversation while having breakfast. "By the way, Mr. Wayne, how did you come to know all of this? "Olivia asked.

"As I mentioned, I have admired Mr. Vere Mendez for a long time. Ever since I learned the true story of his life, he has been an inspiration to me," Vere explained. "I've always dreamt of becoming someone like him, just like Mr. Vere Mendez one day but I can’t be."

Olivia told Vere, "You know, Mr. Wayne, that's the reason I came to Zermatt. I want to be a business partner with Mr. Vere Mendez because it's hard to trust business partners in today's world."

At that moment, Vere felt a sense of happiness upon hearing Olivia's words. In her explanation, she seemed to imply her admiration for him, believing that he was a good and worthy person to be a business partner.

"So, how did Mr. Perry become a problem in Mr. Vere Mendez's life?" Olivia inquired.

"Well, he mistreated his wife in the past, and due to his gambling, the company of Mr. and Mrs. Fuentez, who is Mr. Vere Mendez's in-laws, suffered a downfall because of Mr. Perry," Vere explained. "That's the reason for their separation from Mira, Mr. Vere Mendez's wife. But when Mira Fuentez became Mr. Vere Mendez's wife, Mr. Perry suddenly reappeared and constantly threatened them," Vere added.

Olivia, at that moment, was taken aback by what she heard. She paused in her meal, seemingly in disbelief, and exclaimed, "OMG."

At that moment, Vere decided to halt his narrative, as the events of his past with Mira had taken an unfortunate turn. He remembered the times when he and his late wife, Mira, were under the watchful eye of Mr. Perry, who had made threats and kept a close eye on them. It was a painful chapter in their lives that Vere did not wish to dwell on any longer.

At that moment, Vere decided to change the topic of their conversation. "By the way, Olivia, during the time we've spent together, I have a favor to ask of you," he said.

Olivia asked, "What is it, Mr. Wayne?"

"My request is, can you please stop calling me Mr. Wayne? Just call me Wayne," Vere requested.

Olivia burst into laughter at Vere's request. "Hahaha, very funny," she said amidst their conversation, “changing the topic just because of your nickname  Mr. Wayne”, Olivia added.

At that moment, Vere and Olivia shared a hearty laugh and finished their breakfast. They started their day with Vere preparing to head to the company where Olivia had become a business partner.

As Vere arrived at the establishment where Olivia's business was located, he was taken aback when he saw Mr. Perry and James, his former right-hand man and trusted personal assistant, together.

"Mr. Perry? James?" Vere exclaimed in surprise and whispered to himself.

He also looked stunned. "What are they doing here?" he wondered aloud.

Mr. Perry wore a sly smile as he approached Vere. "Well, well, if it isn't, Mr. Wayne. It's been a long time, hasn't it? This is what I want Olivia to be a business partner?" he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

Vere's expression darkened. "What are you two doing here, Mr. Perry? And so Mr.James?"

James, who had once been Vere's loyal assistant, now had a more sinister air about him. "I’m also Mr. Perry’s assistant Mr. Wayne, and we are here one that aligns better with our interests to have a business partnership with Ms. Olivia is there anything wrong or you want to convince Ms Olivia not to," Mr. Perry replied cryptically.

That time, there is a sensing tension.

In that moment, Vere decided to calm himself down, even though his anger was burning like fire when he saw the two people he despised in his life  Mr. Perry, who had once harassed and threatened him, and James, whom he had once trusted.

After the brief and tense conversation with Mr. Perry and James, Vere knew he had to make a graceful exit. He concocted an excuse, trying to hide the whirlwind of emotions raging within him, just to avoid them.

Vere said, "I'm sorry, but I'm not feeling well. I think I should go home and rest."

James asked Vere, Are you okay, Mr. Wayne? " Maybe I can drive you home."

Vere with a forcing a weak smile "No, no need, Mr. James. I can manage on my own. Thanks for your concern."

With that, Vere turned and walked away, trying to keep up the facade of being unwell. He couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered after the encounter, but he was determined to keep his composure and not let his past haunt him at that time. As he left, he couldn’t ever believe and imagine reflect on the unexpected reunion with his old adversaries.
