Fired. It felt like the floor had dropped out from under him. $500. Gone. His thoughts spiraled. He’d promised her—he’d promised.

The wig, he thought, the birthday gift I promised her. She’s been so patient with me, always supporting me when no one else would. How can I face her now? How can I keep disappointing her?

He thought about his girlfriend, Mia. Few years together, and not once had she ever made him feel like he wasn’t enough. Despite all the snide remarks, the people who looked down on him, and the humiliating jobs he’d taken just to get by, she never once turned her back on him. She really loves me. I know it. Even when he had nothing—when he was scraping the bottom, she was there, cheering him on, reminding him that one day things would get better..

What am I going to say to her?

He pictured her face—the way she always smiled at him, even when he had nothing to offer. ā€œI’ll make it right,ā€ he’d promised. But how could he?

He stopped in front of her door. He stood there for a moment, practicing his words.

ā€œMia, I’m sorry. I got fired. I couldn’t get the gift. But I swear, I’ll make it up to you.ā€

No, that sounds weak. She’ll never buy that.

He cleared his throat, trying again.

ā€œMia, I’ve failed. But I’m not giving up. I’ll get it back. I’ll get us back to where we were. I won’t let you down again.ā€

His breath caught in his throat. He stood there for what felt like an eternity. Then, just as he was about to raise his hand to knock, the door swung open, revealing Mia.

She stood there in nothing but a bedroom robe, her hair still damp from the shower. But it wasn’t the robe that caught Dante off guard—it was the look in her eyes.

Her gaze flickered across him, and her lips pressed into a thin line, almost as if she was... waiting. Expecting someone.

ā€œDante.ā€ Her voice was cold, sharp. Not the warm, gentle tone he was used to.

He felt a lump rise in his throat. ā€œMia… Iā€”ā€

Dante’s chest tightened as Mia crossed her arms, the coldness in her voice slicing through him. ā€œYou don’t even know what time it is, Dante. What are you doing here?ā€ Her gaze flicked nervously to the door again, like she was waiting for someone else to show up.

What’s going on? Dante’s mind raced. The Mia he knew would never be like this. Never so distant, so cold.

ā€œI… I need to tell you something,ā€ Dante said, his voice shaking with uncertainty.

Mia exhaled sharply, her eyes narrowing as she stood in the doorway. ā€œYou want to tell me something? Fine. But I have something to tell you too. You go first.ā€

He swallowed hard, his hands trembling. This is it. I’ll explain it all. She’ll understand.

ā€œI’m sorry, Mia,ā€ he began, his voice barely above a whisper. ā€œI couldn’t get you the gift. The wig. I promised you I would, butā€”ā€

Mia’s lips twisted into something that wasn’t quite a smile. ā€œOh, you couldn’t get it?ā€ she interrupted, her tone dripping with disbelief. ā€œAre you serious, Dante? How could I expect anything different from you? Always promising, but never delivering. You’re pathetic.ā€

Dante’s heart cracked at her words. Pathetic?

ā€œNo, Mia, please, it’s not like that.ā€ His breath hitched as he tried to explain. ā€œI got fired today. The money I was saving for the gift—it’s gone. But I’m going to make things right, I swear.ā€

Her eyes flickered with something that felt like indifference. ā€œFired, huh?ā€ she said, her voice flat. ā€œWhat a surprise. Always running around, failing at everything.ā€

ā€œI’m trying! I’m doing everything I can toā€”ā€

But Mia raised her hand, cutting him off. ā€œI don’t want to hear it anymore. I don’t have to sit here listening to you make excuses for every damn thing you can’t do. I’ve heard it all before.ā€

Dante froze. The words hit him like a slap to the face. He felt like the floor was dropping out beneath him.

ā€œMia, what… what are you saying?ā€ He stepped forward, his hands reaching out instinctively, wanting to touch her, wanting her to see he was still the same person, still the person who loved her.

But Mia turned her back on him, her voice sharp as she spoke again, ā€œI’m not interested in this anymore, Dante.ā€

His mind stopped. ā€œWhat? What do you mean?ā€

Her voice grew colder, if that was even possible. ā€œI’m done. It’s over.ā€

Dante couldn’t process what she was saying. It’s over? His mind whirled. How could it be?

ā€œWhy?ā€ he whispered, his voice hoarse. ā€œWhy, Mia? After everything, after two years?ā€

She didn’t look at him, her face turned away, as if she couldn’t stand the sight of him anymore. ā€œBecause I don’t need this. I need more. I need someone who’s actually going to make it, Dante. Someone who doesn’t just talk about change, but actually does it.ā€

His heart was shattering, the weight of her words crushing him. More? What does that even mean?

Before he could speak again, the door behind her creaked open. Dante’s breath caught in his throat as a man stepped into the room, his presence so confident it felt almost suffocating.

The man’s hand rested casually on Mia’s shoulder, then slid down to her waist. Dante blinked, disbelief flashing across his face.

ā€œHey, babe,ā€ the man said, his voice low and smooth, as he wrapped his arms around Mia from behind, pulling her close. Dante’s eyes widened as the man’s hands slid down her body, his fingers brushing over her chest, cupping her breasts.

Dante’s breath hitched, his stomach twisting in knots. What the hell is happening?

Mia didn’t even flinch. She didn’t push him away. In fact, she leaned back against him, her eyes never leaving Dante’s as she spoke in a cool, detached tone.

ā€œYou see, Dante? This is what I’ve been waiting for. Someone who actually knows how to treat me.ā€

Dante’s mind went blank. The man’s hands were still on her, his fingers caressing her in ways Dante had never even dared to. He couldn’t breathe.

He’d never touched her like that. Not once. And now… now here she was, with someone else, someone from his past.

Lucas?

His mind screamed the word, but his body refused to move. The man standing behind Mia, holding her so casually, was none other than his cousin.

ā€œLucas…?ā€ The name barely left Dante’s lips, a strangled whisper that seemed to hang in the air, mocking him.

Mia didn’t even flinch when Dante spoke. She didn’t look at him, didn’t even seem to care. She was too focused on Lucas, resting her head back against him.

ā€œYeah,ā€ Lucas said, his voice smooth, almost too calm. He casually brushed a stray lock of hair off Mia’s shoulder, his hand lingering there longer than necessary. "Surprised to see me here, cousin?"

Victor spun around, meeting Dante’s calm gaze. He tightened his fists, his voice cold. "You better not mess this up, Dante."Dante chuckled lightly, his hands raised in mock surrender. "Relax, Vic. I didn’t, and I’m not planning to. Just here to enjoy the moment."Victor’s jaw tightened as he caught movement behind Dante. His men rushed in, encircling them quietly. A faint smile tugged at Victor's lips as he stepped closer to Dante. "You see, Dante, I could get rid of you right now. A snap of my fingers, and you'd disappear. No one would notice a thing."Dante’s smirk didn’t falter. He tilted his head slightly. "You could, but I’d advise against it. Unless, of course, you’ve accounted for everything I’ve been keeping an eye on."Victor’s eyes narrowed, his voice a deadly whisper. "What the hell are you talking about?"Before Dante could answer, Delgado’s voice boomed behind them. "Victor! What’s going on here?"Victor stiffened, quickly masking his annoyance with a forced smile. "Noth

Delgado turned, a broad smile lighting his face."Vic," Delgado greeted warmly. "I hope you're not here to talk business. Tonight's about family and celebration."Victor offered a small smile. "Of course, sir. Just wanted to let you know the containers have been moved to a more secure location. Everything's under control."Delgado’s grin widened. "That’s why I trust you, Vic. At a private airport, the rumble of a plane engine gradually faded as it came to a halt on the runway. The doors opened, and heavily armed men stepped out first, scanning the area with sharp, trained eyes. Then an old man appeared, stepping onto the tarmac with the casual confidence of someone who had seen it all. A cigar hung from his lips, its ember glowing faintly in the dusk light.Victor stood near the hangar, his posture respectful but firm. He held a bouquet of fresh flowers, an unusual but calculated gesture of deference. As the old man approached, Victor extended the bouquet toward him."Mr. Delgado," Victor said with a polite nod. "It’s an honor to see you again after all these years."The old man took the flowers, a faint smirk curling his lips as he examined them briefly before looking back at Victor. "Nice touch, Vic. You’ve grown into a proper man, haven’t you? Your father would be proud.""The pleasure’s all mine, sir," Victor replied smoothly. "Welcome back. We’ve prep

  • Chapter 11- Finding out the truth 😣

Lucas stepped into the backyard, the cool breeze doing little to calm his frayed nerves. He pulled out his phone, dialing Victor’s number with a sharp jab of his finger. Pacing the length of the garden, his tone was already laced with frustration when Victor answered."I told him, Victor," Lucas snapped, not waiting for a greeting. "I warned the damn doctor. I said there’d be consequences if he didn’t cooperate. But he ignored me, and now he’s gone. Vanished! And no one knows where the hell he is."Victor’s voice on the other end was steady but tense. "Calm down. We know who took him."Lucas stopped dead in his tracks, narrowing his eyes. "Who?"There was a brief pause before Victor said the name. "Dante."For a moment, Lucas was silent. Then he let out a bitter laugh, running a hand through his hair. "Dante? Of course, it’s him. He’s like a damn roach—always creeping back no matter how many times you think you’ve crushed him. What’s his problem now?"Victor’s tone sharpened. "He kno

He muttered under his breath, his face red with frustration. ā€œDante kills my father, and the authorities just let him walk. This is bullshit. Absolute bullshit!ā€ Mia entered the room quietly, her heels clicking against the marble floor. ā€œLucas,ā€ she said softly, trying to sound calm, ā€œyou need to take it easy. Drinking like this isn’t going to solve anything.ā€ He shot her a glare, his voice sharp. ā€œTake it easy? Take it easy? My father’s dead, and Dante—Dante!—is out there celebrating like nothing happened! And you want me to take it easy?ā€ Mia hesitated, her voice faltering. ā€œI’m not saying it’s fair, butā€¦ā€ She paused, choosing her words carefully. ā€œBecause of all this, the wedding… it’s been postponed until further notice.ā€ Lucas froze, then slowly stood, his eyes narrowing. ā€œPostponed?ā€ His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. ā€œYou’re postponing our wedding because o
