The morning was bright, but the mood inside the Harrison mansion was far from cheerful.

Clara’s mother paced the living room, talking loudly on the phone. “Yes, yes, the police confirmed it! The Black Vipers are gone. But I still don’t know who helped us. Some people say it was a rival gang, others say the army stepped in secretly.”

She ended the call with a sigh. “At least we’re safe now. Thank God.”

Ryan came down the stairs quietly, dressed in his simple black shirt again. “Good morning.”

Her eyes rolled the moment she saw him. “Morning, Mr. Delivery Man. I hope you find something useful to do today.”

Ryan smiled slightly. “I always do.”

She shook her head. “If only Clara had married someone like her cousin’s husband. A man with money. Instead, she brought home a man who can’t even buy himself decent shoes.”

Clara came down after him, her hair tied neatly. “Mom, please. Not this morning.”

Her mother crossed her arms. “If I don’t say it, who will? You’re young and beautiful, and you’re wasting your life.”

Ryan picked up his old backpack and slipped on his worn shoes. “I’ll be back later,” he said simply, and left the house.

---

At the delivery company, Ryan moved boxes quietly while the other workers joked and laughed.

“Ryan,” his boss shouted, “take this parcel to the downtown area. Be quick.”

“Got it,” Ryan said.

As he pushed his motorbike through the busy street, he passed a small food stall where an old man was being harassed by two young men in black.

“Old man,” one of them said, “you think you can sell here without paying us? This is our street!”

The old man shook his head. “Please, I barely make enough to feed myself.”

Ryan stopped his bike. “Leave him alone.”

The taller one turned and glared. “And who are you? Delivery boy? Mind your business.”

Ryan looked calm. “He’s old. You’re not.”

The man stepped closer. “You want to play hero?”

Before he could move, Ryan grabbed his wrist and twisted it lightly. The man screamed and fell to his knees. The second one tried to punch him, but Ryan dodged easily, hitting him once in the stomach. The two men ran off without another word.

The old man trembled. “Thank you, son. You’re strong. What’s your name?”

Ryan smiled faintly. “Just a delivery guy.”

He handed the man some cash and left.

---

That evening, when he returned home, the Harrisons were gathered around the television, watching the news.

“The mysterious group of gangsters known as the Black Vipers have officially disbanded,” the reporter said. “Police are calling it a miracle.”

Clara’s mother laughed. “A miracle indeed! Some rich man must have done it. People like Ryan can’t even fix a light bulb.”

Clara didn’t laugh this time. She stared at the screen for a few seconds, then turned to her mother. “Whoever did it, I just hope he stays around. At least someone out there can protect this family.”

Her mother nodded. “Yes, a real man, not a useless one.”

Ryan walked in quietly, setting his bag down. “I’m home.”

Her mother smirked. “We noticed.”

He smiled softly. “Smells good in here.”

Clara crossed her arms. “Don’t bother acting like everything’s fine. You come home tired every day, but for what? You’re not contributing to the family, Ryan. After all, what do you even have?”

Her words cut deep, but Ryan didn’t reply. He just looked at her for a moment, nodded, and said, “You’re right.”

He turned away and walked out to the balcony. The night air was cool, and the city lights shone below.

Inside, Clara’s mother whispered, “See? He has no answer. Nothing good ever comes from him.”

Clara didn’t reply, but something about Ryan’s silence made her chest feel heavy.

---

Later that night, Ryan’s secret phone buzzed on the table.

He picked it up, and a deep voice said, “Commander, we found a clue about the man who betrayed your unit five years ago.”

Ryan’s eyes hardened. “Send me everything.”

He ended the call, stepped outside, and whispered to himself,

“Looks like peace doesn’t last forever.”

Only the sound of plates clinking came from the kitchen.Ryan walked toward the sitting room and saw Ava arranging the chairs neatly. She looked up at him and gave a small nod—not a smile, not friendliness, just a normal greeting. But even that was new. Ava had never greeted him without her mother watching.“Good morning,” Ryan said calmly.“Morning,” Ava replied, then continued arranging the chairs. The silence between them wasn’t uncomfortable. It simply felt strange… almost peaceful.A few minutes later, Ava’s mother came out of the kit

It was Clara’s mother.“That girl is getting too comfortable,” the older woman said quietly.Ava looked up. “Who?”“Clara,” her mother replied. “She came home last night angry for no reason. And she was saying nonsense about that cousin of hers, Eric.”Ava paused. “What nonsense?”Her mother leaned closer. “She said Eric will soon bring ‘good news.’ But I don’t trust that boy. She sighed as she counted the money she made from the previous night’s extra shift. It still wasn’t enough. It never seemed enough.Ryan stepped out of the bedroom, his hair a little messy, wearing the same simple shirt he always wore at home. He paused when he saw Ava’s tired face.“Another bill?” he asked quietly.Ava didn’t look up. “Yes. They increased the electricity payment again.
