Rain hammered against the stone balcony, I stood frozen, the silver ring clenched tightly in his palm. The name carved inside it burned into my mind. Behind me, Adrian stood in the doorway, drenched from the storm, his golden eyes fixed on the ring.

And for the first time since I had returned, Adrian looked shaken, not confused, not defensive, but afraid. My voice was cold.

“Explain.”

Adrian’s gaze snapped to my face.

“That ring…where did you get it?”

I took a slow step forward. “Answer me.”

Aurora remained still between us, tension crackling so sharply I could almost taste it, Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I lost that ring.”

I laughed, bitter and humorless.

“Convenient.”

“It’s the truth.”

I held it up. “This was at the scene.”

Adrian’s face paled. “That’s impossible.”

My patience thinned. “Three victims are dead. Your name is in Ethan’s ledger. Your ring is here. And now someone tells me to ask you what happened the night I died.”

Aurora’s head snapped toward me, that was the first time she’d heard it. Adrian’s expression shifted, for one brief second, recognition, and I caught it.

“You know something.”

Adrian stepped back. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Liar.”

I lunged, my hand slammed Adrian against the stone wall, the impact cracked it. Rain ran down Adrian’s face as I pinned him there, ruby eyes glowing.

“What happened that night?”

Adrian stared at me, for a moment I thought he might fight. Instead, Adrian’s voice came low.

“I don’t remember.”

My grip tightened. “That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one I have.”

Aurora grabbed my wrist.

“Stop.”

I ignored her. Adrian’s gaze hardened.

“I swear to you, Kael. I don’t know.”

The sincerity in his voice was dangerous, because I wanted to believe it. That made me angrier, I shoved Adrian away.

“Then stay away from me.”

Adrian straightened, breathing hard. “You think I killed you?”

I didn’t answer, because right now, I didn’t know. Adrian looked between Aurora and I. Something hurt flickered across his face, then he turned and disappeared into the storm. Silence followed, only rain, and thunder. Aurora slowly looked at me.

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

I stared into the dark. “He’s hiding something.”

“Maybe.”

I looked at her sharply. “You don’t think he did it?”

Aurora hesitated. That hesitation annoyed me.

“I think,” she said carefully, “someone wants you to believe he did.”

I clenched the ring tighter, and that was the problem, she was probably right.

The next morning, Blackthorn was chaos, the false Lyra murder spread like wildfire, students panicked. Parents from noble houses demanded answers, professors tightened restrictions, no one was allowed outside after sunset, no one traveled alone, guards were everywhere.

Kael sat in the library with Aurora, the photograph spread between them. Six students, three dead, three left, Adrian, Aurora, and I. I tapped the ritual circle.

“This matters.”

Aurora leaned closer. “The symbols.”

I looked at her.

“You recognize them?”

She nodded, her silver hair slipped over her shoulder as she bent lower.

“They’re blood-binding runes.”

I frowned. “For what?”

Aurora’s expression darkened.

“Sacrifice.”

A cold feeling crawled down my spine, I looked at the photo again, three dead, three left, six total participants. Not victims, but components.

“They’re building something,” I said.

Aurora nodded. “A ritual.”

I leaned back, and suddenly understood, the murders weren’t random, they were preparation. The Heartstone Society wasn’t just a student club, it was tied to something much older, something bigger, and I had been part of it, or I would be, and I hated that.

Aurora’s fingers brushed mine as she reached for the photograph, it was brief, barely there, but I noticed, so did she. Her hand stilled, our eyes met, for a moment, neither moved. The tension was sharp, uncomfortable, and not unpleasant. Aurora pulled away first, I looked back at the photo, but my mind lingered on the warmth of her skin.

By evening, I decided to confront Lyra. If she was on the list, she needed to know, or maybe she already did. I found her in the greenhouse, alone. Moonlight filtered through the glass ceiling, flowers glowed pale blue under enchantments. Lyra looked up when I entered, her ice-blue eyes widened.

“Kael.”

I got straight to it. “Do you remember?”

Her breath caught, that was enough confirmation. She remembered, her gaze lowered.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened, another one, another person from the past.

“How much?”

“Everything.”

The betrayal, in the throne room, my death. Everything, I stared at her.

“You killed me.”

Her face went white, tears filled her eyes instantly.

“It wasn’t…”

“Don’t.”

My voice cut like steel, Lyra trembled.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

Before she could, glass shattered, I spun, a figure crashed through the greenhouse ceiling. Black cloak, masked face, knife aimed at Lyra, I moved instantly, I caught the attacker’s wrist mid-strike and slammed them into the ground. The masked figure twisted unnaturally fast, not like a werewolf, vampire or a witch. I barely dodged the blade, it cut my shoulder. Aurora’s voice echoed,

“Kael!”

She had followed me, magic exploded from her hands, chains of silver light wrapped around the attacker, for one second, then shattered. The attacker laughed, it was low and it felt like he was mocking us, and he vanished into black smoke. I stood breathing hard, blood dripping from my shoulder, Lyra was shaking. Aurora rushed to me.

“You’re hurt.”

“It’s nothing.”

She grabbed my arm anyway, her hands glowed as healing magic sealed the wound. Warmth spread through me as I stared at her. She looked furious.

“You call that nothing?”

Her fingers remained on me, too close, too warm, I couldn’t stop looking at her. Rain from outside made her silver hair glisten, her lavender eyes burned with worry, for me, that was dangerous. Aurora realized how close we were and stepped back. Lyra noticed, and her expression darkened. I ignored it of course.

“Did you recognize them?” he asked Lyra.

She shook her head. “No.”

But I saw hesitation, another lie, everyone was lying.

Later that night, I stood on the academy roof, the cold air helped me think, it didn’t help much tonight. There were too many pieces, and too many secrets. Footsteps approached, it was Aurora, she stepped beside him quietly.

“You always isolate yourself when you’re angry.”

I glanced at her. “You noticed?”

She smiled faintly. “I notice more than you think.”

Silence stretched, the academy glowed below them, small, and fragile. I looked at her.

“You loved me before.”

Aurora froze. I was straight to it, her cheeks colored. “That’s a dangerous question.”

“It wasn’t a question.”

She laughed softly, rainwater still clung to her hair, her voice dropped. “Yes.”

I studied her. “You never said anything.”

“You were engaged.”

“To Lyra.”

“Yes.”

I looked away.

“And now?”

Aurora stepped close enough to feel her warmth.

“I still haven’t said anything.”

I smirked despite himself, she was clever. Our eyes locked, the space between us shrank, tension, sharp, and heavy. I could feel her heartbeat, I could smell the lavender on her skin, for one dangerous second, I almost kissed her.

A scream ripped through the academy, both of us turned. It came from the south wing, again. My blood ran cold, it shouldn’t be another one. We ran fast, students poured into the halls. There was chaos, and fear everywhere.

I reached the corridor first, then stopped, blood covered the walls, it was fresh. At the center of it, Adrian, on his knees, hands covered in blood, with a body at his feet, it was Lyra. She was motionless, with a blade through her chest.

Adrian slowly looked up, his golden eyes wide, he looked horrified. And in his hand, he was wearing the stolen silver ring.

  • Training Begins

Morning arrived wrapped in mist. For the first time in what felt like weeks, Blackthorn Academy woke without screams echoing through its halls, no bells signaling another murder, no terrified students crowding the courtyards, and no professors rushing toward another crime scene. The silence should have been comforting, instead, it felt unnatural, like the academy itself was holding its breath. I stood on the balcony outside my dormitory, my crimson eyes fixed on the mountains beyond the academy walls. The mark on my throat had faded to a dull crimson overnight, but I could still feel it beneath my skin, pulsing slowly with every heartbeat. It hadn’t spoken to me again, I heard no voices, had no dreams, it was just silence. I wasn’t sure whether to be relieved or disappointed.“You’ve been standing there for nearly an hour.”Aurora’s gentle voice broke through my thoughts, I didn’t bother turning around.“I know.”“You also skipped breakfast.”“I know.”“And you’ve been

  • The Echoes Within Kael

I jolted awake, my breathing came in ragged bursts as cold sweat clung to my skin. Moonlight poured through the windows of my room, casting pale streaks across the floor. The mark on my throat burned, it was not painful, but it was just enough to remind me it was there. I pressed two fingers against it and closed my eyes. The voice still echoed inside my mind, “the seal is broken.” It was not loud, or threatening, it was simply… waiting. I climbed out of bed and walked to the balcony. The academy grounds lay silent beneath the moon, as though nothing had happened over the past several days. There were no screams, blood, and no monsters. Yet I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching me, and it was someone ancient, and patient.“…Who are you?” I whispered into the night.Only silence answered. Morning arrived with unusual calm. The temporary seal beneath Blackthorn had stabilized the academy enough for classes to resume, though the atmosphere remained ten

  • A Temporary Seal

The skeletal hand tightened around my throat, as crimson fire crawled up my neck. My body slammed against the broken altar, the impact cracking stone beneath me. The hand was impossibly cold despite the flames burning around it. I clawed at the wrist, but it didn’t move, the thing inside the altar began pulling itself free. A skull crowned in jagged black iron, with hollow eye sockets burning crimson. It was The First King, though not fully yet, but it was enough to terrify everyone in the sanctum. Aurora acted first, silver chains of witchlight shot forward, wrapping around the arm. The creature hissed, then Lyra followed, frost magic erupting from her hands, freezing the skeletal limb, it’s grip loosened. I tore myself free instantly and stumbled backward, coughing. Adrian pushed himself off the floor, blood dripping from his mouth.“What in hells is that?”The headmaster face had gone pale.“The First King.”Adrian blinked. “That’s supposed to stay buried.”I wiped blo

  • The First King?

The academy shook, as stone split apart beneath their feet, students screamed as the ground cracked open through the central courtyard, ancient red light pouring from the depths below Blackthorn. The roar came again, and it was louder this time, closer. I stood motionless, crimson energy still burning around me, my veins glowed beneath my skin. The crown-shaped mark on my throat pulsed like it was alive. I could still feel Elias’s blood, even after his death. I could feel everybody’s own. Hundreds of heartbeats, hundreds of veins pumping beneath flesh, every single drop. And It felt overwhelming. Aurora grabbed my wrist.“Kael.” Her voice cut through the noise, my burning eyes flickered toward her. But her touch steadied me, it made the rage inside me quiet, it barely made an effect but it felt enough. Headmaster Alaric stepped forward, his expression grim.“Come with me. Now.” I didn’t move, because the thing beneath the academy roared again. Students started evacu

  • The Primordial Bloodline Awakens

The blood-red circle beneath my feet ignited. Ancient symbols blazed across the cracked archive floor like veins of fire, spreading outward in violent pulses. The heat hit instantly, Aurora stumbled back.“Kael!” My body locked, pain shot through my chest. It wasn’t physical, it was something deeper, something buried. The air around me thickened, pressing down with unbearable force. My veins burned, the symbols beneath me pulsed brighter. My name glowed at the center, not “Kael Draven,” it was something older, something that was written beneath it. Aurora’s eyes widened as she saw it, a second name, one I couldn’t understand, a language that was long dead. Then, the circle shattered, I dropped to one knee, gasping, as blood spilled from my mouth onto the floor. Aurora rushed to me, then her hands grabbed my shoulders.“Kael…look at me.” My ruby eyes flickered wildly, for a moment they glowed gold, then silver, then black, every bloodline, every power, before settling ba

  • Lyra isn’t Dead

For one terrible second, the world stopped, I stood frozen in the corridor, staring at Adrian, blood covered the stone floor, blood stained Adrian’s hands. And Lyra lay motionless at his feet, a blade buried in her chest. Around us, students screamed, some backed away, others stood frozen in shock. Aurora’s grip tightened around my arm.“Kael” But I was already moving, I shoved through the crowd and dropped beside Lyra, her skin was too pale, but my sharp hearing caught it, a heartbeat, it was weak and faint, but it was there. She was alive.“Move!” I barked. A professor rushed forward, then another, I yanked the blade from Lyra’s chest, ignoring the blood spilling over his hands. Aurora immediately knelt beside me, silver light bursting from her palms, healing magic, the wound began closing, but slowly. I looked up, Adrian still hadn’t moved, he looked… broken, and confused. As though he didn’t understand how he got here. Then I grabbed him by the collar.“What did you do?”
