Two months had passed since Matt collapsed at the Guild’s gates by the highway, exhausted after a hellish five-year journey that had begun when he was sixteen, in the blood-chilling cold of Anadyr.
Now, at twenty-one, Matt was no longer the frightened boy who had watched Svetlana die. His features were hardened, marked by frostbite scars and the weight of a trauma that refused to fade. During those two months, even though he had never accepted a salary or worn the Federation’s uniform, his daily life alongside Boris had created a strange closeness between them. Bitter, but real. “I’ve told you ten times over these past two months, Matt.” Boris’s heavy voice came from the entrance of the tent as the older man adjusted the fasteners on his tactical coat. “If you’re going to act like a free mercenary, at least don’t throw yourself into a slaughterhouse. Valentin isn’t alone. As an Expert, he has several Illuminated under his command, along with an entire defensive garrison.” Matt swallowed the last piece of his combat ration and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. He looked up, meeting the older man’s tired eyes. “I’m going to get my revenge… or die trying, Boris.” Matt spoke with a calmness that sent a chill through the blood. “There is no middle ground for me. If I come back, it’ll be with Valentin’s head. If I don’t, at least I’ll stop walking.” Boris clenched his jaw, but said nothing more. He knew there were no words capable of moving the stubbornness of someone whose Will had been forged in the necrosis of loss. Without waiting for an answer, Matt turned around, calmly removed his boots, and lay down on the field cot. He pulled the thick blanket over himself and closed his eyes, allowing the silence of the camp at night to swallow him. As he listened to the steady drumming of rain against the canvas, Matt’s mind returned to the figure of the man who had just walked out. Boris. One of the seven remaining Transcendents of the human race. To the rest of the world, those seven men and women were not ordinary soldiers. They were weapons of mass deterrence, living catastrophes capable of wiping out entire districts. They were the only reason the Empire had not completely eradicated the survivors. Five of those Transcendents led the five Guilds of the Federation, the bastions of resistance scattered across the globe: Number One — Demon House (Italy): Its leaders were the brothers and Transcendents Lucas Rossi (32) and Oliver Bianchi (35). It was the only faction with two Transcendents at its head. Number Two — God’s Eye (France): Led by the Transcendent Silvia Laurent (28). Without a doubt, it was the largest Guild on Earth, with a network of more than ten thousand subordinates and informants spread across every continent. Number Three — El Odiseo (Russia / Central Europe): Its leader was Boris Volkova (42). Matt still found it surreal that his friend’s old uncle was the commander of such a military power. Number Four — Sanctuary of the Fallen (China): Led by Liu Sheng (41). Rumors claimed that, based on the quality of its fighters, it was the most powerful Guild. However, its members categorically refused to abandon their guardianship of the Asian continent. Number Five — Zulu (Africa): Led by Amara Osei (26), the backbone of the African continent, under whose command fearsome Awakened warriors had risen. Yet the Federation was not governed by the Guilds alone. Above their individual interests stood another institution: the Government. It was responsible for maintaining order among the five Guilds, keeping their power in check and preventing the Federation’s own factions from tearing each other apart. At its head stood the seventh Transcendent. Arthur James. Known as The First Master. He was the absolute leader of the Government and the supreme mediator of the Federation. At thirty-seven years old, Arthur was the only survivor of the American continent after the Great Flash of 2015. He had been the first human being to break through the shell of Will when Bastian appeared in the skies. Only three months after the Great Flash, Arthur had already reached the rank of Master. The world had watched the United States being slaughtered. Arthur had survived it alone. For many, that suffering was what forged him into the man he became. He was considered by many to be humanity’s Absolute Hero. Legends claimed he was the most powerful warrior in the world and the only person standing on the threshold of the sixth rank, with the potential to break through into something beyond it. Unlike the leaders of the five Guilds, Arthur did not represent a single faction. He represented the Federation itself. That alliance of five Guilds, held together under the authority of the Government, formed humanity’s ultimate shield against the Empire. Matt clenched his fist beneath the blanket, feeling the handle of the chipped knife resting against his side. All those people fought for noble causes, for the freedom of the human race, or for political control of the planet. They were titans playing on a board built for kings and strategists. Matt didn’t care about the five Guilds. He didn’t care about the First Master, nor about the threat of the Demon King Bastian. His world was much smaller. Bitter. And sharp. The world isn’t black and white… it’s gray, he thought to himself as sleep finally overcame him.Latest Chapter
Valentin
Matt rose to his feet as though his body had suddenly become several times heavier. He had killed his comrade. He didn't know how he could face the others, but first, he had to win this fight.Tap.His foot struck the ground as Matt straightened up.His childish mourning was over. Now he was ready. He had to be. Only then would he be able to look his team in the eyes again. For a moment, Sofia stood frozen. However, the fight was far from over. She pulled the dagger from her thigh and got back to her feet. Julius used his Will to cauterize his shoulder wound, then gripped his rapier with his remaining hand and took his stance. As if bound by an unspoken agreement, the three of them lunged at Valentin, attacking mercilessly and giving him no room to breathe.Matt grabbed his sword and slashed diagonally toward Valentin's neck. The count leaned back, letting the blade pass, then smoothly kicked away the rapier aimed at his heart. With the same momentum, he kicked the air, propelling him
Expert
Mark watched the blood drip from Gustav's neck and saw the light fade from his eyes.He was dead.Mark leaped to the left, feeling a dagger graze his chest. He barely had time to react before a descending kick came crashing toward his head. He hurriedly raised his arm and threw himself to the ground to absorb the impact. With a forward burst, he narrowly avoided a stomp aimed directly at his face.Crack.The wooden floor splintered and broke beneath the force of the stomp.Mark looked up and saw a man standing among the debris, staring at him with cold, emotionless gray eyes."Who the hell are you?" Mark demanded. The gray-eyed man didn't even flinch.Thud.A dull blow rang out behind him, and Mark's world dissolved into darkness. The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was the silhouette of that man striding toward him."Good work," Matt said to Julius, who had just knocked their enemy unconscious."Bind him and sedate him. We leave in ten minutes," David ordered from the w
Turning Point I
Laura hurried back toward the group. The others followed, their expressions complicated.Without wasting any time, the captain called an emergency meeting, and every member of the team gathered."The infiltration team has urgent information," the captain announced. At his signal, Laura spoke up."Riots are breaking out across Sector One. Most of the counts and barons are busy suppressing the unrest." She paused briefly before continuing. "There's also a meeting at Valentin's fiefdom, attended by the two barons under his command. That's why we couldn't find any of them in Teller."She looked at the captain, handing the floor back to him."We don't know exactly what they're discussing, but this is the perfect opportunity to infiltrate the estate and kidnap a Baron," the captain said, unable to hide the excitement in his voice. With Sector One plagued by small-scale uprisings, no one would be able to respond in time to intercept their operation. The timing couldn't be better.Matt calmly
Oasis
"That's the town of Teller," David said, stating the obvious since they had already gathered all the useful information. They stopped and sat down beneath a pine tree to eat while they worked out their plan."Teller has around three hundred inhabitants, and there are Imperial officers stationed there as well," Julius said, grabbing a piece of jerky."That's right. Only three of us will enter: Laura, Enzo, and Silvio," the captain ordered.Obviously, a group of eight people would attract attention. Three people, on the other hand, all still at the Master rank, wouldn't draw nearly as much notice.Matt stared at them, stunned. He hadn't even considered that."There's an oasis half a day's journey from here, to the southeast. The rest of us will wait for you there."There was no need for discussion. Everyone already knew what to do. They were explaining the plan so Matt could understand it.Matt was irritated by how readily they had agreed. He hadn't thought of any of this. He had just w
Alliance
(Matt's POV)He was confused. One moment, he had been fighting. The next, he was in a cabin with the very same people he'd been fighting against. He thought they were going to arrest him, but before he could even process the situation, she hugged him, making all the tension drain away.It was Alicia. She was hugging him and telling him to calm down. For a moment, he didn't know what to do, but then he realized his Will was hurting her, so he brought it under control, concealing it completely. Then he saw Alicia finally manage to breathe again, and he gently tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear."Is that really you, Alicia? What are you doing here?"Alicia held his gaze for a few moments before taking two steps back. Then she turned to look at her teammates, who were now on guard, gripping their weapons tightly…Matt watched them. It was obvious they didn't trust him.The feeling was mutual.Matt ignored them and spoke to Alicia instead."So you're with them…" Matt said reflexive
Darkness
(Present)He was in darkness. An immeasurable, infinite blackness. He felt nothing. He didn't even have any memories. He simply existed, floating in the vastness of the darkness.Time passed…As time went by, memories began to return, one by one, like pieces of a puzzle joining together on a blank canvas, gradually tracing the outline of a memory.Matt was detached from the emotions that slowly came back to him. He had vague memories of needing to do something, no matter what. However, the darkness was pleasant. It made him reluctant to leave its embrace.Time passed, and he finally remembered that he had been heading to Alaska to kill Valentin. With that came understanding. If he had failed, then he still had to fulfill his revenge. And yet, he hadn't even managed to meet Valentin before losing to a bunch of strangers.Strangers who, despite being his enemies, had fought quite well.Matt had to fulfill his revenge, but that didn't mean he would ignore everything else. They had played
