Found the Hidden Secret
The northern road is being watched. Two patrols are searching the coast, and another has been sent towards the village.” “Because of us?” I ask. “Because of you,” Kael says. “They want you alive.” I remember the commander staring at my glowing mark, calling me the Witch of the First Flame. “Right. You’re explaining everything now.” “I’ll tell you what I know.” Torren taps the map. “An old chapel inland may still have sanctuary wards the Crown can’t cross.” “And if they aren’t?” “Then we’ll have a very unpleasant evening.” “Your confidence is inspiring.” “Thank you.” “That wasn’t a compliment.” “I know.” “We leave when I can travel,” Kael says. Torren eyes his injured arm. “How long?” “A few hours.” “You can barely lift that arm.” “I can still fly.” “Can you carry two people?” Kael says nothing. “I can walk,” I cut in. “Then we’ll take the inland path,” Torren says. I look through the broken window and think of my shop, books, and grandmother’s belongings. My gra
The Secret My Mother Left Behind
I reach for the cloth covering the bolt, intending to examine its markings more closely. A faint blue glow catches my eye. I freeze. Along the shaft, a symbol has appeared: a circle divided by three narrow lines. I look at the blade. Its runes remain dark. “Kael?” His eyes open. “This bolt is glowing.” His expression changes so quickly that I almost miss it. “Don’t touch it.” I withdraw my hand. “I’m not touching it. I’m looking at it. There’s a difference.” He doesn’t smile. “It’s a tracking seal.” My stomach drops. “Tracking us how?” “The Crown can follow the weapon’s magical imprint. If they activated the seal before firing, they may already be looking for us.” I stare at the bolt. We escaped the soldiers. We crossed the coastline. We found shelter. And somehow, they may still be able to find us. I move towards the doorway and peer through the rain. The cliffs are dark, and the wind carries the smell of wet stone and saltwater. I can’t see anyone, but that does
The Price to Pay
Neither wound looks remotely harmless. “Can you move your fingers?” I ask. “Yes.” “Any numbness?” “No.” “Dizziness?” He gives me a sideways look. “Are you treating me or interrogating me?” “I’m multitasking. Try to keep up.” I examine the wounds without disturbing either weapon. The skin around the blade is unnaturally cold. His upper arm is still bleeding, though not as heavily as before. “Which one hurts more?” “The blade.” “Can you breathe normally?” “Not entirely.” That answer takes the humour right out of me. I look at the handle protruding from his side. The Crown’s hawk emblem has been stamped into the silver, and tiny runes circle its base. The bolt carries similar markings. “Those aren’t ordinary weapons, are they?” “No.” “Enchanted?” “Yes.” I glance at him. “You could try giving me a complete answer the first time.” “The blade keeps the wound open. The bolt interferes with my dragon core.” I look from one weapon to the other. “And if I remove them?” “T
The Price of HearthFire
The soldiers freeze. One drops his spear. The commander takes a step backward. “Impossible.” I can’t speak. Dragons are extinct. I’ve known that my entire life. Every story, every history lesson, every dusty book I’ve ever read says the same thing. Yet one stands before me, wounded and furious, with the same golden eyes that looked at me outside my shop. The dragon turns his head toward me. For one terrifying moment, I expect him to attack. Instead, he lowers his body and places one enormous claw beside me without touching me. Behind us, the commander shouts for his men to regroup. I look at the broken walls, the weapons scattered across the floor, and the creature offering me a way out. I have no idea who Kael Draven really is. I don’t know why the Crown wants my blood. And I have absolutely no idea what the First Flame is. But I know what will happen if I stay. I climb onto his back, gripping the scales beneath my hands. “I don’t trust you,” I whisper. His golden
Beneath
That doesn’t mean I trust him. It just means I’m beginning to suspect he’s as lost in this mess as I am. I take out my knife and examine the runes carved into the handle of the silver blade. They’re intricate, each line curving toward a small symbol at the centre. I’ve seen old protective markings in my grandmother’s books, but nothing quite like this. “Can you remove it?” Kael asks. “Not without understanding what the runes do.” “Then don’t touch them.” I turn to him slowly. “Do you have another suggestion?” “No.” “Excellent. We’re making progress.” I wrap the handle in a strip of cloth and carefully scrape away the dark residue covering one of the outer markings. The metal vibrates beneath my fingers. Kael grips the edge of the stone ledge. “Stop.” I pull back immediately. “What happened?” “The binding tightened.” My stomach drops. I look at the blade, then at him. I’d nearly made his injury worse because I was too impatient to find an answer. I hate how helpless
The King Beneath The Skin
I should be relieved. Instead, I sit on the floor, staring at him and wondering what I’ve done. I’ve heard stories about healing magic. I’ve read enough old books to know that powerful witches sometimes develop abilities they don’t understand. But I’ve never heard of anyone saving a stranger with a single drop of blood. And that voice seems _ I press a hand against my chest. The crescent mark has stopped burning, but I can still feel a faint warmth beneath it. Whatever happened, it wasn’t normal. And I have a horrible feeling it wasn’t an accident. The stranger groans. I scramble to my feet, grab a clean cloth, and press it carefully against the wound around the blade. His eyes open. Gold. Not hazel. Not amber. Gold. The same unnatural colour I’d seen when he stood at my door. For a moment, neither of us speaks. He looks at the cloth pressed against his side, then slowly raises his gaze to mine. “What did you do?” I blink. “Saved your life, appa
