And that is how I found myself being tossed from one side to another on a direct train, along with my Alpha, at the main station of Prince George. We were standing in the only car packed with people, which we had managed to board at the last minute.

It seems that, so as not to traumatize his mate, Chase decided to lie about where he came from, also because saying that he came from a werewolf pack located less than 5 kilometers from her, in the middle of the forest, would not have made a good impression...

"You'll see, Kaelen, you'll like her too; she is simply fantastic," Chase repeated to me for the fifteenth time.

"For the fifteenth time, I answer that: one, it seems unlikely given my condition that I'll be able to see her; and two, seeing how you are describing her to me, I think I basically know her already," I reply, summoning all my patience.

"Yeah, well, it's just that I care a lot about her," he replies, almost... embarrassed.

"It wasn't obvious at all, look. But satisfy a curiosity: are you by any chance embarrassed right now?" I ask, surprised. I have known Chase for a long time, and I have never heard him be embarrassed about anything.

"NO," he replied immediately.

Oh. Goddess. Luna.

Chase embarrassed was something I hadn't seen, and this adds to the list of oddities that this Brianna is causing him. I'll have to compliment her.

"But is it possible that even though you are blind, nothing escapes you?" my friend asks, piqued.

"You don't need eyes to understand that you are as cooked for her as a turkey on Thanksgiving Day. Anyway, how long until we arrive?" I ask, anxious to get off this train, which is too crowded for my taste.

"We'll arrive in minutes, don't worry. Actually, Brianna told me that she will be waiting for us at the station. So, behave yourself," he admonishes me, as if I were the problem.

"See that you behave yourself and don't jump on her as soon as your gaze meets hers. I want to say that it's not me with my hormones off the charts, Alpha," I reply, admonishing my friend’s wolf: he is capable of marking her on the spot if he loses control.

"That’s why I brought you with me, Beta. You will be the one who stops me from doing stupid things with my mate," he retorts, and I imagine his sly look like when, as children, we had to pull some prank.

"This story will not end well, I can feel it," I whisper to myself.

"We have arrived, get ready to get off," my Alpha informs me, patting me on the shoulder.

As soon as the voice on the microphone announces the stop, all those present stand up simultaneously, sweeping me along. Occupied with keeping myself standing, I let myself be carried by the mass of people until my feet are firmly back on the platform.

I immediately focus, looking for my friend's scent, and once I identify it, I approach him, but as soon as I enter the range necessary to hear his heart, I stop. It is exponentially accelerated, and that means only one thing: he has seen his mate. I hide behind a column and sharpen my hearing enough to hear what they are saying.

"You are... beautiful, Brianna," my friend says, stumbling over his words. I said it; he is completely gone.

"Thank you... Um, how was the trip?" The one pronouncing these words was a delicate and gentle voice, just as described to me by Chase, which I immediately associate with Brianna.

"Ah, the trip was a bit hectic... but it was well rewarded by the sight of you," Chase answers. I grimace.

Oh Goddess, this was the one who, a year ago, was in battle with me, tearing victims apart with his teeth, and now it seems he has eaten a book of poetry. I hope that after the recognition and the marking, he returns to normal. I hope so. Let it be put on record that I will not behave in such a sappy way with my mate. Always assuming I find her, of course.

"Exaggerated, anyway, thank you," replies poor Brianna, probably in awe now. Imagine someone you have known for a little less than two days telling you these things. You would all find yourselves at least a little embarrassed.

A long silence follows this, so much so that I have to click my tongue to understand if they are still there. At this sound, Chase seems to wake up and exclaims: "Sorry Brianna, I forgot to introduce you to my best friend. Aiden, come here, let me introduce you to Brianna."

I immediately approach and give a nod to Chase. I immediately offer her my hand to introduce myself to avoid the classic embarrassing scene where I grope around trying to find a hand in the air. "A pleasure, I am Kaelen, the best friend of this character," I introduce myself, trying to dampen that overly serious air a bit.

She grabs my hand, reciprocating the greeting and giving a light laugh. In return, I receive an elbow to the ribs from Chase, without knowing that I just saved his day with her. Her hand is small compared to mine and seems very delicate. The grip is not particularly strong but simply cordial, and this makes me understand that she does not have a particularly strong personality. She will be the calm and reasonable part that will go to compensate for that of a stubborn and impetuous Alpha. In practice, this time too, the Moon Goddess got it right. "Pleasure, my name is Brianna Gosselin, welcome to Prince George."

I limit myself to answering with a smile while I focus on her scent to be able to recognize her in the future: flowers. Lotus flowers, to be precise.

But it is precisely while Brianna and Chase begin to talk about this and that, that the Moon Goddess decides my destiny.

In fact, focusing on the scents that surround me, suddenly I hear another one. An intense, particular, unique perfume. A perfume that must absolutely be MINE.

And that, in the same instant that I perceive it, I understand that it is the only scent I want to smell for the rest of my life.

Immediately, I turn around, focusing as much as I can to capture that splendid fragrance: "Excuse me," I whisper to take my leave in a hurry, and immediately, at a brisk pace, I follow the trail.

I avoid suitcases, I dodge people, but the same crowd that helped me get off the train now seems to block me. In fact, as soon as the loudspeaker announces the arrival of a new train, heading I don't know where, people start to crowd together.

They block me, they shove me, they try to confuse me. But the scent of my mate, like north on a compass, keeps me heading toward my goal. I start shoving people aside in a hurry, not caring about the suitcases I knock over or the people I push, but as soon as I arrive at the point where she was, the doors of the departing train close. I touch the door, and as soon as the train starts to move, I pull back.

And the scent that had guided me there disappears behind the doors of a train.

After nearly two hours of travel, the train hissed to a final stop at Vanderhoof. As I stepped onto the platform, the sheer scale of the challenge hit me like a physical blow. The town was larger than McBride, housing over four thousand souls, and divided into two distinct districts. The density of human life here felt like a labyrinth designed to keep me from her."It won't be simple to find her in the middle of all these people," I muttered, my voice tight with frustration as we exited the station.Chase shifted his weight, his tone hardening from brotherly comfort to Alpha-level intensity. "Come on, friend. Don’t fall apart now. We need to find this blessed mate of yours and put an end to this torment. Like McBride, we start with the gathering spots—bars, restaurants, shops, schools. And the libraries. We check every single public library first.""Why the libraries?" Chase asked, his brow furrowed."Her scent... it reminds me of a new book," I replied, though the uncertainty gnawed

The morning was a relentless blur of physical exertion, a necessary distraction from the suffocating weight of my own thoughts. I spent the hours deep within the forests bordering the town, pushing my body until my muscles screamed and my lungs burned, trying to outrun the phantom scent of chestnuts and bay leaves that haunted every breath I drew. Chase had a date with his mate, a prospect that clearly occupied every corner of his mind. He was radiant, glowing with a happiness that felt both enviable and alien. As for me, I had a mission that weighed heavier than stone. Tonight, we were scheduled to reach the next town. If she wasn't there—if this second attempt failed—I wasn't sure I could survive the crushing disappointment. To drown out the incessant chatter of my own mind, I shifted. The transformation was a familiar, jarring process, a rush of cold air meeting skin that felt too sensitive. In my lupine form, the world was not a place of sight, but a tapestry of vibrations, heat s

The waking world didn’t greet me with the gentle morning sun; it crashed into me like a freezing bucket of icy water—a classic, brutal tactic employed by none other than Chase. I gasped, my lungs seizing as the cold liquid soaked into my clothes, pulling me violently from the dark, drug-induced abyss I had been trapped in."Wake up, you lazy bastard," Chase’s voice boomed, devoid of sympathy. "We have a train to catch in an hour. I’m sacrificing a perfectly good day with Brianna to drag you across the province to find your mate. Move."His command was absolute, leaving no room for argument or the lingering haze of the sedative. I groaned, my body feeling heavy and uncoordinated, and dragged myself up by clutching the armrest of the sofa. My head pounded, a rhythmic, pulsing throb that mirrored the instability of my heart."What do I look like?" I muttered, running a shaky hand over my face. The skin felt rough, sensitive, and somehow foreign.Chase paced the length of the apartment, t

Chase returned around eight, the sounds of his heavy boots against the hardwood floor echoing through the silence I had cultivated in his absence. He didn't notice my stillness immediately; he was too consumed by his own narrative, his voice light and airy as he recounted the trivial, sun-drenched details of his day with Brianna. He spoke of the way she laughed, the way she looked at the city lights, and his absolute, unwavering certainty that she would make a magnificent Luna for our pack. I listened with a forced, brittle smile, playing the part of the brother-in-arms, while inside, I was drowning in an ocean of my own misery. He was standing on the threshold of a new life, a future bright with the promise of his mate, while I was anchored in the wreckage of a past that refused to stay buried. The envy that gnawed at my insides wasn't for his power or his status—it was for the simple, agonizing normalcy of being able to see the woman he loved."You haven't said a word, Aiden," Chase

To say that my world collapsed at that moment is an understatement of the raw, visceral agony that consumed me. I had finally found my mate—the missing piece of my soul—only to lose her in a heartbeat, swallowed by the indifferent tide of a train station crowd. I knew nothing of her, not her face, not the sound of her voice, only the intoxicating ghost of her scent lingering in my senses like a bittersweet memory. It was a perfume that defied definition; a delicate symphony of roasted chestnuts, the sharp, refreshing bite of bay leaves, and the ancient, comforting smell of old books. It was a scent that spoke of secrets, of stories waiting to be told, and of a belonging I had never known. A scent that would haunt my existence forever.I had tasted the heavens, felt the rhythm of the universe pulsating in my own veins, only to be cast back into the darkest abyss of solitude. "Why, Moon Goddess?" I screamed silently into the void. "What is the meaning of this cruelty? Why show me my hea
