Chapter 1

The Ditch and the Voice

Pain was no longer a sharp, stinging sensation. It had settled deep into Ethan's bones, a heavy, rhythmic thrumming that matched the erratic pounding of his heart against his bruised ribs.

Rain drummed a relentless, unforgiving rhythm against the asphalt, turning the narrow alleyway into a slick, garbage-strewn drainage ditch. Cold water pooled beneath him, soaking through his ruined shirt, chilling his skin until he could no longer feel the difference between the freezing puddles and his own blood.

He spat out a mouthful of copper, the metallic taste of his own teeth sickeningly familiar. His vision blurred, the harsh, yellow glow of the distant streetlamp fracturing through the sheets of rain into blinding halos.

"Check his pockets," a raspy, bored voice echoed from somewhere above him. "Marcus wants to make sure he doesn't have a single cent left to his name before we toss him into the river."

A heavy leather boot slammed down mercilessly onto Ethan’s hand, grinding his knuckles into the jagged gravel. Ethan didn't even have the breath left to scream. He let out a pathetic, wet gasp, his fingers twitching uselessly in the mud.

"Pathetic," a second voice spat, accompanied by a contemptuous laugh. "Can't believe a piece of trash like this actually thought he could marry into high society. Clara was laughing the whole time she signed the breakup papers."

Clara.

The name cut sharper than any knife, sinking past the physical agony straight into the core of his shattered pride.

Footsteps squelched away, leaving him alone in the freezing dark. Ethan stared up at the empty sky, the weight of utter, crushing humiliation suffocating him faster than the blood pooling in his lungs. He had given her everything. Five years of working double shifts, five years of swallowing every insult from her wealthy friends, five years of bleeding himself dry just to pay for her lavish tastes. And how did she repay him? By watching with cold, amused indifference while her new fiancé’s thugs reduced him to a broken doll in a gutter.

I am a loser, Ethan thought, his consciousness fraying at the edges, the darkness creeping inward to swallow him whole. I gave up everything for nothing. I deserve to die here.

As his final breath rattled in his throat, a sound cut cleanly through the roar of the rain.

Ding.

It wasn't a raindrop hitting metal. It was a crisp, chillingly pristine digital chime, echoing not in the alley, but directly inside the empty chambers of his mind.

[Critical condition detected.]

[Host vital signs dropping below critical threshold: 3%.]

[Will to live evaluated: 0%.]

[Despair and humiliation levels reaching maximum capacity: 99.8%.]

Ethan blinked sluggishly, wondering if the blood loss was finally causing him to hallucinate.

[Condition met. The Supreme System is initializing...]

A pale, translucent blue screen flickered into existence against the dark backdrop of his eyelids, casting a ghostly luminescence over his battered face. The interface was sleek, impossible, and terrifyingly real.

[Binding successful.]

[Host: Ethan Vance.]

[Current Status: Broken, Despised, Abandoned.]

[Primary Directive Activated: Conversion of Malice.]

A second chime followed immediately, sharper and more demanding than the first.

[The Supreme System binds to your broken body.]

[Unique Ability Unlocked: Malice Conversion Engine.]

[Explanation: Every ounce of contempt, insult, mockery, physical violence, and hatred directed toward the Host by others will be captured, processed, and converted into tangible physical currency, attribute points, and evolutionary energy.]

[Pain is no longer your defeat, Host. Pain is your capital.]

Ethan stared at the floating characters, his shattered mind struggling to comprehend the impossible stream of data. The rain continued to pour, washing over his motionless form, but the freezing numbness in his limbs suddenly began to tingle with a strange, unnatural warmth.

[Incoming conversion calculation based on recent events:]

[Verbal abuse by Marcus's enforcers: 4 instances.]

[Physical assault and humiliation: Severe.]

[Betrayal by fiancé (Clara Vance): Maximum emotional trauma.]

[Initial Capital Generated: 500 System Credits / 50 Stat Points.]

[Warning: Host body requires immediate structural repair to process initial energy influx.]

[Initiating emergency cellular reconstruction...]

A jolt like high-voltage electricity surged through Ethan’s veins. It wasn't the dull, throbbing pain of his injuries anymore; it felt as though liquid fire was being pumped directly into his heart, burning away the weakness, knitting the torn muscle fibers back together with terrifying speed, and reinforcing his fragile bones with a dense, unyielding weight.

Ethan let out a sharp, choked gasp, his back arching off the cold, wet pavement as his eyes snapped wide open, burning with a cold, terrifying clarity.

The humiliation didn't vanish—it fermented, turning from a bitter poison into dark, raw power.

[Body reconstruction: 100%.]

[System ready.]

[Welcome to the apex, Host. Let the world choke on what they made you.]
