“Mother, you forgot one of us.”
The voice rose from the darkness beneath the collapsing floor, and Elara Veyron's trembling fingers released the silver device she had been holding. Before the device could strike the ground, the stranger wearing Kael's face lunged toward her, his expression twisting with a fury that seemed to have been imprisoned for years.
“You knew!” he roared. “You knew there was another one, and you still left me down there!”
He seized Elara by the throat and slammed her against the doorway. Her boots scraped helplessly across the broken tiles as black symbols crawled up his arm, spreading toward his shoulder like living shadows.
“Let her go!” Kael shouted.
He charged toward them, determined to tear the stranger away from his mother, but an invisible wave of pressure struck his chest and hurled him across the room. His shoulder collided violently with a stone pillar, sending a sharp burst of pain down his arm. When he tried to stand, the black mark on his palm flared, and the room tilted so violently that he had to grab the wall to keep himself upright.
A warning appeared before his eyes.
WORLD ERROR: MULTIPLE EXISTENCE CLAIMS DETECTED.
REALITY COLLAPSE IN PROGRESS.
ESTIMATED TIME TO STRUCTURAL FAILURE: 04:32.
Kael stared at the countdown, struggling to understand what would happen when the final second disappeared. Would the academy collapse completely, or was the system warning him that something far more terrifying was about to happen?
He received his answer when the academy's outer wall tore apart.
Through the shattered windows, Kael watched the surrounding towers bend inward as though an invisible hand was crushing them. Students ran desperately across the courtyard, but the ground beneath their feet kept changing without warning. Stone transformed into rushing water, the water hardened into transparent glass, and the glass swallowed everything that touched its surface.
The academy was not simply falling apart. Reality itself was rejecting something, and whatever it rejected might take everyone inside the building with it.
“Kael!” Seraphina screamed.
She was kneeling beside Professor Thorne, whose body had been pinned beneath a fallen section of the ceiling. Blood covered his temple, and the magical barriers that had protected him throughout the disaster had completely disappeared.
“Help me lift this!” she pleaded.
Kael forced himself to his feet, ignoring the pain radiating through his shoulder. He hurried toward them, grabbed the broken slab with both hands, and pulled with all his strength, but the heavy stone refused to move.
His palm began burning again.
This time, however, the pain brought something different into focus. Thin lines appeared across the surface of the slab, revealing the hidden connections holding the stone together. One line glowed faintly where the slab joined the floor, and Kael instinctively understood that the connection represented a flaw in the structure.
He did not know how he recognized it, but his body seemed to understand what his mind could not explain.
“Break,” he whispered.
The glowing connection snapped.
The slab separated into three pieces and crashed harmlessly away from Professor Thorne, leaving the injured professor free to move.
Kael staggered as a sharp pain tore through his skull, and warm blood trickled from his nose.
LOCAL STRUCTURAL RULE ALTERED.
COST EXTRACTED: ONE MEMORY.
He froze as the meaning of the message settled over him.
Something had disappeared from his mind.
He knew he had once celebrated a birthday with his mother because he could still picture the cake, the candles, and the warmth of her hand resting on his shoulder. Yet when he tried to remember what she had said to him that night, he found nothing but a space where her words should have been.
The memory remained, but its most important part had been taken away.
Kael wiped the blood from his nose, horrified by the price of his ability. If every alteration demanded a piece of his past, then using World Error might eventually leave him powerful enough to change reality but too empty to remember why he had wanted to change it.
“Kael, what happened?” Seraphina asked, helping Professor Thorne sit upright.
“I don't know,” he answered, staring at his marked palm.
After a moment, he looked up at her with growing dread.
“Actually, I think I do. Every time I change something, the ability takes something from me.”
Before Seraphina could respond, a furious scream erupted near the doorway.
Elara had driven her elbow into the stranger's ribs and twisted free from his grip. She stumbled toward Kael, clutching her throat as she struggled to breathe, while the stranger watched her with an expression of wounded disbelief.
“You still protect him,” he said bitterly. “Even now.”
Elara raised her head, fighting through her pain.
“I am trying to protect all of you.”
“No. You are trying to make the same mistake disappear.”
The stranger's body flickered, and his face briefly dissolved into a blur of overlapping features before returning to Kael's familiar appearance. At the same time, the darkness beneath the fractured floor widened, releasing a cold wind that swept through the room.
Something was climbing out of the opening.
At first, Kael could see only a hand gripping the broken edge of the floor. A second hand emerged beside it, followed by a head covered in tangled black hair. The figure dragged itself upward with slow, deliberate movements, its fingers digging into the stone as though it had forgotten how to walk.
Strips of white material hung from its body, resembling the remains of an old hospital gown. Dark veins covered its neck and arms, while a heavy metal collar encircled its throat.
When the newcomer finally pulled itself onto the floor, Kael forgot how to breathe.
The figure looked like him.
Unlike the stranger, whose face carried the unmistakable signs of anger and bitter exhaustion, this newcomer possessed an unsettling calmness. His eyes were pale silver, and a vertical scar divided his lower lip. Despite his ragged appearance, he studied the room with the quiet familiarity of someone returning to a place he remembered from childhood.
Then his gaze settled on Elara.
“You look older, Mother.”
Elara covered her mouth as a broken sob escaped her throat.
“Elias.”
The name struck Kael with unexpected force.
Elias.
He had never heard that name before, yet the moment his mother spoke it, something stirred inside his chest. The sensation resembled a memory struggling to rise from beneath deep water, too distant to recognize but too familiar to dismiss.
Elias smiled faintly when he saw her reaction.
“You remember me.”
“Of course I remember you,” Elara whispered, tears running down her cheeks.
“Then why did you leave me alone?”
Elara took a trembling step toward him, stretching out one hand as though she were afraid he might disappear if she moved too quickly.
“I thought you were dead.”
Elias glanced down at the metal collar surrounding his throat. His expression remained calm, but something cold passed through his silver eyes.
“You thought the seal would finish what you started.”
The stranger wearing Kael's face released a humorless laugh.
“Tell him the truth, Mother. Tell him what you did to all three of us.”
Kael turned toward Elara, his heart pounding against his ribs.
“All three?”
His mother looked from one figure to the other, and her expression crumbled beneath the weight of a secret she could no longer keep buried.
“Kael, please. You have to listen to me.”
“Then explain!” he shouted. “Why do two people have my face? Why does that thing call you Mother? And who is Elias?”
Before she could answer, the academy shook violently. Part of the ceiling collapsed behind them, sending a cloud of dust across the room and forcing everyone to shield their faces.
Professor Thorne struggled to his feet, supporting himself against the wall.
“We don't have time for the entire truth,” he said urgently. “We need to close Chamber Zero before the distortion reaches the central mana network.”
Elias slowly turned toward him.
“You still believe the academy is the important part?”
He lifted one hand.
Every remaining magical symbol in the room vanished.
The golden runes disappeared from the walls, the protective markings around Thorne's fingers faded, and the magical lights flickered out. The professor stared at his empty hands with an expression of pure terror.
Elias returned his attention to Kael.
“Do you know why your ability is called World Error?”
Kael shook his head, unable to look away from the newcomer.
“Because the world has been lying about what happened here,” Elias explained. “Your power is the mechanism that corrects those lies.”
He reached toward the metal collar around his throat, resting his fingers against its cold surface.
“And I am the reason it was created.”
The collar split apart with a sharp metallic crack.
A shock wave erupted from Elias's body, sweeping through the room with enough force to throw Seraphina against the wall and drive Professor Thorne to his knees. Kael reached instinctively for his mother, but the floor between them separated into jagged sections, leaving a widening gap that threatened to swallow anyone who stepped across it.
“Kael!” Elara screamed.
He stretched out his hand, desperately searching for a way to restore the broken floor. Thin glowing lines appeared before his eyes, revealing the connection between the fractured sections and the space beneath them.
He understood that he could restore the connection, but the warning that appeared before him made him hesitate.
PROPOSED ALTERATION: RESTORE SPATIAL CONTINUITY.
POTENTIAL COST: PERMANENT LOSS OF PERSONAL HISTORY.
Kael stared at the message, torn between his fear for his mother and his growing terror of the ability destroying his memories.
He could save her, but the cost might be everything that made her his mother in his mind. If World Error took away the memories connecting them, he might stand beside her afterward and feel nothing at all.
Kael clenched his teeth and pulled his hand back.
He could not keep using his ability blindly without understanding its rules. If he sacrificed another memory every time he faced danger, he might eventually become someone who no longer remembered what he was fighting for.
Instead, he grabbed a length of broken metal from the floor and threw it across the gap.
“Mother! Grab it!”
Elara caught the metal rod just before it slipped over the edge. Kael and Seraphina seized the opposite end, braced their feet against the broken tiles, and pulled together until Elara managed to cross the unstable floor.
When she finally reached them, she collapsed into Kael's arms.
For one brief moment, she held him as tightly as she had when he was a child, pressing her face against his shoulder as though she could protect him from the truth by refusing to let him go.
“I am sorry,” she whispered.
Kael wanted to push her away and demand every answer she had withheld. He wanted to know whether the childhood he remembered had been real, whether his name belonged to him, and why two strangers carried his face.
Yet her trembling hands reminded him that, whatever she had done, she was still terrified of losing him.
Before he could speak, Elias broke the fragile moment.
“Ask her about the first Kael.”
Elara went rigid in his arms.
Kael slowly released her and stared at Elias.
“What did you mean?”
His mother could not meet his eyes.
Elias approached, stepping carefully over the fractured tiles. The stranger followed him, and for the first time, the two identical figures stood beside each other without fighting. Their matching faces looked like reflections separated by a broken mirror, each one carrying a different expression of the same unbearable history.
“The first Kael was the original subject,” Elias explained. “He was the one who existed before the experiment, the one whose body was supposed to contain the power capable of rewriting reality.”
He pointed toward the stranger.
“This one carries the memories and instincts extracted from that original subject.”
Then Elias pointed toward Kael.
“And you carry the identity they built from what remained.”
Kael felt the room spin around him.
“No.”
Elara reached for his hand, but he pulled away before she could touch him.
“Kael, please—”
“Tell me he's lying!”
His mother opened her mouth, but no words came.
Her inability to answer destroyed the last piece of certainty Kael had been clinging to. All his life, he had believed that whatever else was wrong with him, at least his name, his childhood, and his identity belonged to him.
Now even those foundations were beginning to crumble.
The stranger stepped forward, his dark eyes fixed on Kael.
“You were not born to replace me. You were created because Mother couldn't bear what she had done to the original.”
Elias shook his head slowly.
“Both of you are wrong.”
The two figures turned toward him.
For the first time, the calmness disappeared from Elias's face. His silver eyes darkened as he touched the broken collar hanging loosely around his neck.
“The original subject was never the child in the chamber.”
He pressed his palm against the metal.
“It was me.”
Kael stared at him, unable to reconcile the calm young man standing before him with the revelation he had just made. Even the distant sounds of the collapsing academy seemed to fade as everyone struggled to understand what Elias was claiming.
“You're saying we're copies of you?” Kael asked.
“Not exactly. Mother divided my existence into three parts because my original power was destroying the laws of magic. One part held the memories, one held the identity, and the last held the power itself.”
Elias looked down at his hands, studying them as though he were examining the remains of a life he barely recognized.
“Those parts became you, him, and me.”
Seraphina slowly rose from the floor, holding one arm against her side as she tried to recover from the shock wave.
“Then why does Kael have the power to rewrite reality?” she asked.
“Because his portion was never supposed to awaken.”
Elias lifted his eyes toward Kael, and the expression on his face grew increasingly troubled.
“And now that it has awakened, the system must reunite us.”
A new warning appeared before Kael's vision.
REUNIFICATION SEQUENCE: 91% COMPLETE.
PRIMARY HOST CONFIRMED.
MEMORY TRANSFER BEGINNING.
Kael doubled over as unfamiliar memories flooded his mind. He saw a childhood he had never lived, a woman he had never met, and a voice whispering his name from inside a dark chamber.
He watched Elara standing over a glass enclosure while red symbols flashed across the machinery surrounding it. He heard Elias screaming from somewhere behind the glass, and he saw the stranger smiling as the first seal closed.
Then another memory surfaced, and its details frightened him more than anything he had seen before.
A battlefield stretched beneath a blood-red sky. Lucien Draven stood before a throne made of black crystal, his sword buried in the chest of a man who looked exactly like Kael.
At first, the scene seemed identical to the moment of Kael's death.
But this time, Kael noticed something he had missed before.
Lucien was not looking at the man he had stabbed.
Instead, he was staring at someone standing behind the throne.
Someone wearing Elara's face.
The memory shattered before Kael could see what happened next.
He collapsed to his knees, gasping as the pain in his head threatened to tear his thoughts apart.
Across the room, the stranger began dissolving into black particles. His body flickered as though the world were slowly erasing him, while Elias reached toward him with an expression that betrayed a fear he had been trying to conceal.
Elara screamed for them to stop, but neither figure appeared capable of controlling what was happening.
Professor Thorne crawled toward the broken silver device, dragging himself across the floor despite the blood running down his face.
“Kael!” he shouted. “You must interrupt the sequence!”
Kael struggled to lift his head.
“How?”
“Find the contradiction!”
Kael stared at the three figures, desperately trying to understand the impossible structure of their existence. Three lives, three identities, and one power that apparently could not exist in separate bodies without destroying reality itself.
His ability had been designed to correct contradictions, but a terrifying possibility began to form in his mind.
What if the contradiction was the truth itself?
He raised his trembling hand, preparing to use World Error even though he still did not understand the cost.
Before he could act, Elias seized his wrist.
“Don't,” Elias whispered.
Kael stared into his silver eyes and saw genuine fear staring back at him.
“Why?”
Elias glanced toward Elara, then toward the stranger who was rapidly disappearing into black particles.
For the first time, his voice trembled.
“Because if you reunite us, you'll discover which one of us your mother was really trying to save.”
The warning reached Kael a heartbeat too late.
The black mark on his palm ignited, flooding the room with a blinding flash of dark light.
A final message appeared before his eyes.

“Kael Veyron, we need to talk about the world you were never supposed to save.”Lucien Draven’s voice echoed through the ruined corridor as he walked toward Kael, and Kael immediately reached for a broken piece of metal lying beside his feet. The sound of that familiar voice brought back memories he had desperately tried to understand, each one more disturbing than the last.He had heard Lucien speaking while he lay dying on the battlefield. He had heard the same voice inside the memories recovered from the laboratory twenty-five years earlier, and moments ago, it had echoed through his mind just before the system identified his true identity as Lucien Draven. Now the man connected to every unanswered question was approaching through the academy’s eastern entrance as though he had every right to be there.Kael tightened his grip around the metal and raised it defensively.“Take another step, and I’ll find out whether you can bleed.”Lucien stopped beneath the broken archway, showing n

Chapter 3: The Thing That Wore My Face
“You’re lying!”Kael Veyron stumbled away from the black door as the voice on the other side repeated his name. Every protective enchantment in the room had redirected its remaining energy toward the sealed passage beneath him, but the barrier was already beginning to fail. The voice laughed again, carrying a familiar note of bitter amusement.“You always say that when you’re frightened.”Kael felt the blood drain from his face. The voice was not merely similar to his own; it carried the same uneven breathing he remembered from the final battlefield and the slight rasp that appeared whenever his throat became dry. Even its mocking tone sounded painfully familiar. He had heard himself speak thousands of times throughout his life, but hearing his own voice emerge from something imprisoned beneath the academy made him feel as though his identity were being stripped away.“
