Harvey went to the kitchen as instructed by his mother-in-law. He sighed deeply and took a disheartened glance at the mountain of dishes waiting for him in the sink. He recalled cleaning up the kitchen before ever he went to dress up, then how on earth were all these dishes there?
"Hey, where have you been? I wanted to call you to clean up this mess. Good thing you already know your work too well." Lewis, his younger brother-in-law and most annoying member of the family walked in and taped him on the shoulder disrespectfully. He was an average-looking young man, with tattoos all over his body and his hair barbed stylishly and tinted red.
"What's the meaning of this Lewis? I remember cleaning up the kitchen. How come you make this kind of mess within a short while?" Harvey was pissed.
"Oh shut up Harvey, you don't have the right to question me. Besides, my friends came a little bit earlier than the other guests so I needed to entertain them."
Despite him being seven years older than Lewis, Lewis has never for once talked to him with respect, Harvey had been tempted severely to teach this brat a lesson, but he dared not in order not to face the wrath of his mother-in-law.
"Now hurry up Harvey, make yourself useful, the dishes are ready and you know they are not going to serve themselves." Lewis taunted walking out of the kitchen.
Harvey clenched his fist. His messed up life started a few years ago, he was just an orphan living with his elder sister, Nadia.
She had been like a mother to him, taking care of all his needs and wants, but tragedy unfolds when Nadia has a motor accident while hawking. Ever since she had been sick and unable to walk properly, Harvey had no other choice but to take up the responsibility to himself to take care of both of their needs.
He graduated from college and became a business strategic expert. That was when he met Gracia’s grandpa, Oldboy Anderson. He became his assistant. The Anderson family business was on the verge of collapsing due to a serious bankruptcy it faced. They had lost all hope for the company to regain composure when Harvey, with his expertise, saved the dying company.
Old boy Anderson was grateful beyond words and when he realized Harvey’s interest in Garcia, he arranged for their marriage.
Although they never consummated their union, Garcia and the rest of the family accorded Harvey with respect until Oldboy Anderson kicked the bucket.
His in-laws stripped him of his job position as an assistant and reduced him to a common housekeeper. Using his sister’s medical bill to keep him in check, they pulled strings to make sure no one hired him. Regardless of their vicious actions, they still called him useless for not being able to cater for himself.
Despite Having no good job, Harvey had been treated equally to the servants in the mansion, he was not even allowed to sleep in his wife's room, not to mention touching her. They made him do all the house chores as they saw it as the only way for him to pay them back for allowing him in their mansion and feeding him.
Even when he looked for a part-time job his greedy wife took all his salary leaving him without a single penny.
"What the hell are you still doing in the kitchen you good-for-nothing roach?!" Eloise his mother in-law stormed into the kitchen.
"Do you want to spend the entire day washing these little dishes?"
"I'm so sorry mother, I'll be done quickly."
"Keep your apologies to yourself, the guests are hungry, hurry up and come serve the food." She instructed.
"B-but mother, today's a special day for me, am I still supposed to serve the guests? It will be very embarrassing." Harvey complained.
"How dare you say otherwise when I give you an institution? You're a worthless trash bag. People like you shouldn't be embarrassed, because you're already the epitome of embarrassment." Eloise wasted no time to smack him with insults.
"You are going in there to serve my guests, or else I'll stop paying for your sister's medical treatment, do I get myself clear?!"
"Understood Mother, I'll do as you say," Harvey said with his head bowed slightly.
"Rubbish!" Eloise glared at him with disgust before walking away.
Harvey could endure all their insults and tauntings as long as it remained in the mansion. But going out there in public to serve the guests on his wedding anniversary, what kind of humiliation will be more than this?
One of the things that made him remain in the mansion was because of his sister's treatment, he couldn't afford to pay for her bills, and in return for serving the Andersons, they had promised him to clear her treatment.
The party had already started, and Harvey joined the other servants to serve the food on the guests' tables.
Harvey was bending his head while serving, trying to hide his face from the public to escape humiliation, but he got exactly what he was running for.
"Hey, isn't Gracia's broke husband?" One of the three ladies seated at a table asked her friends.
"Yes, it's him. I clearly remember him, he was all over the news after he got married to Gracia. What a joke." The other lady chipped in.
"What is he doing here then? Isn't he supposed to be seated with Gracia?"
"Hell no, look how shoddy he has dressed, I believe his suit wouldn't cost more than $75 serving the guests accommodates him more." They all laughed at him, Harvey gritted his teeth, the same humiliation he'd been avoiding had found him.
He hurriedly dropped the food on the table and walked away, but was called back by the ladies.
"Waiter please come over here?" Her friends laughed mockingly.
"What'd you want?" He asked with a frown.
"Can I get champagne instead?" She gestured at the water she served.
"Sure."
"Thank you. Happy anniversary!" She mocked, but Harvey ignored him and just walked away.
A few hours after serving all the guests, it started raining and most of the guests had no option but to stay behind.
Harvey was done cleaning up with the other maids, they also arranged the guest rooms, for all the people staying behind. It had been a very stressful day and he decided to take some rest. He walked towards his room, but the door was locked, he then knocked until his mother-in-law approached him.
"Can't you see that there is someone inside?" she asked, her voice rising with irritation. "This room has been allocated to a guest tonight. You can't enter. It's not yours for tonight."
Harvey frowned, baffled. "But this is my room! What do you mean it's not mine for tonight?"
Eloise gave him a withering look. "The guest rooms are full, and this is the only space available. It's your room if I say so, and for tonight it isn't yours."
Harvey's face flushed red with frustration.
"Then where am I supposed to sleep tonight?"
"Don't ask me, you can sleep anywhere. Sleep at the stable."
"At the stable?"
"Yes. Do you have any problem with that?" She raised a brow.
"No, of course not, I'll sleep at the stable then" He agreed in order not to upset her.
Eloise scoffed before walking away.
