It was Harvey’s first wedding anniversary today with his wife, Garcia Anderson. The Andersons had planned on celebrating it in a big way.
The hall was decorated with beautiful designs, attractive flowers with alluring colors were hanging in every corner of the area, and the glass round tables were properly set up with beautiful roses around followed by gifts.
The beautiful glitters of different colors of lights made the hall more stunning and adorable. The stage where the couples were going to be giving their speech was also designed beautifully and everywhere smelled heavenly with the expensive perfumes of the guests.
The Anderson family had invited only the wealthy and influential business associates and family friends for the celebration and they made sure the whole atmosphere smelt of wealth.
Everywhere looked magnificent. The Anderson family made sure everything was set and in order, as they awaited the arrival of their guests.
It had been a hectic and stressful day for Harvey. He had been busy since morning making arrangements and preparing all that would be needed for
the occasion. His in-laws had strictly given him some orders and what to do concerning the event.
He did everything perfectly to avoid their insults, he didn't want them abusing and insulting him, especially in front of the guests. He didn't want such embarrassment, especially not on his day.
He went to the kitchen to do some finishing touches, after arranging and tidying up the refreshments, he checked around to make sure everything was in order before he left for his room. He needed to go prepare for the occasion.
But then he began to wonder, he hadn't set eyes on his wife for the past few hours. “Should I wait for her to come or should I just start dressing up?”
Harvey thought in confusion. He didn't want to make wrong choices that would cause him insults.
Gracia had told him that she was going to get her outfits and other necessary things for the occasion, but that couldn't have taken much time.
As he passed the hallway he heard his mother-in-law ordering her designer and make-up artist to hurry since the event was going to start soon. He rushed to his room avoiding a waste of time.
He finished showering quickly and hurriedly went to dress up. He searched his entire cabinet searching for something presentable to put on since he couldn't purchase any good clothing for himself for the occasion. He had always wanted to get himself something good but Garcia had always taken all his poor salary. And he didn't argue with her just to make her happy.
Finally, after searching everywhere, Harvey was able to find something manageable to wear. It was an oversized grey suit that his boss had given to him on his birthday.
After dressing and arranging his hair, he put on his footwear and examined himself in the mirror, it wasn't so bad. So, he smiled at himself and stepped out of his room.
As he reached the hallway, he saw his mother-in-law coming out of her room and immediately she saw him, she stopped and glanced at him disdainfully already feeling disgusted by the clothes he was wearing. It was obviously below their standard.
She couldn't just let him pass without belittling him.
"Why did you choose today to wear rags? You look like a madman. Couldn't you at least look presentable today? She scolded with a smirk on her face.
“I won't let you embarrass our family. Useless fool.”
He wanted to explain himself but she cut him off with a wave of her hand.
"I know the position that suits you. You can't function as my daughter's husband today. No! You aren't fit to be her husband.” she stated.
Feeling bad, he began to explain,
“Mother-in-law, this is the best of what I have.”
“Shut your dirty mouth. Now, listen, you will be taking care of the refreshments and serving. We won't be needing you for any special purposes." She said and walked away without giving him room to explain.
Harvey couldn't believe what he just heard. This made him so angry and pained. Ever since he married his wife they have always treated him like a piece, and for that, he has gotten used to it. But asking him to serve on this important day was too painful to bear.
He was still in his thoughts when the sound of loud music jolted him out of his thoughts. He walked closer, peeked through the hall window, noticed that the ceremony was about to start, and saw the ushers directing guests to their seats. everywhere was already crowded with wealthy and graceful people and the environment was a sight to behold.
Harvey readied himself and made his way to the hall. Then he caught sight of a figure, he leaned forward and he saw his wife, Gracia, beautifully dressed in her gorgeous gown, which was adorned with white pearls.
An unintentional smile formed on his face as he saw her. Although his wife’s family treated him poorly, the love he had for his wife was unconditional.
Suddenly, his eyes met the gaze of another man and he opened his mouth in shock. Gracia was walking towards the stage holding in her arms the hands of another man.
No! Maybe he was wrong, maybe all the stresses of the day were clouding his brain and most especially his eyes. He pushed further and looked again and saw that he was not only holding the man but attaching unto him. He couldn't take it anymore so he made a way to approach them.
He took two more steps when someone blocked his way. He looked up and it was his mother-in-law. He didn't notice that she had been watching him from where she stood.
"What do you think you are doing? You fool. Hold on, were you going to show your stupid self to my honorable guest? So you're bent on embarrassing my family today, huh? Who do you think you are? You better go to the kitchen now and clean up some things, make yourself useful for once." She barked at him.
Harvey was still standing there looking at how his wife continued to stick to the man's body. It was a pesky sight to behold. It saddened him more seeing her looking so delighted in another man’s arms.
'Smack!'
Harvey was slapped so hard in the face that all he could feel was a wave of pain racing through his face.
It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to his mother-in-law’s angry expression, glaring at him.
He had hoped that the party would go off without a snag. It was their day and he should have been there, standing by his wife’s side, but she didn't want him as she always referred to him as useless and disgraceful.
His face contorted in pain, and he instinctively reached for it, tenderly grasping it to relieve the searing pain. He could feel the ring on his mother-in-law’s finger, leaving a mark on his face. It was going to swell, he thought.
“Now, take your worthless self back to the kitchen now!” His mother-in-law barked at him, bringing him back to reality as he turned back and left for the kitchen, his mind spinning with emotions he couldn't understand.
