Wilfreda’s pulse hammered in her chest as she stared at the pendant glowing faintly within the wooden box. The air in the basement felt heavier now, as though the very walls leaned closer, listening.

Her mother’s words echoed in her head: “One of three.”

Her mouth was dry. “So you’ve been keeping this… thing hidden all these years? Why? To protect me—or to control me?”

Helsin’s lips pressed into a thin line, her usually cold eyes betraying a flicker of something deeper. “You think this was about control? Wilfreda, I’ve lied to you, yes, but not for the reasons you imagine. If people knew what you carried in your veins—what this pendant could awaken—you wouldn’t have survived to stand here.”

"Mom..." Wilfreda called out in frustration. "I still don't understand any of what you're saying yet."

Helsin drew in a long, shaky breath, as the weight of all that she had kept for so long pressed heavily on her chest, and for a moment, she wondered if she would even find the strength to continue

The music played softly in the background, a cheerful mix of pop beats and mellow acoustics, perfectly chosen for the intimate birthday party Wilfreda had imagined. Streamers of gold and lavender swayed with the air-conditioning draft, and the smell of fresh vanilla cake floated from the dining table where a large, beautifully decorated three-tier cake waited to be cut.Wilfreda darted between the kitchen and the living room, her excitement bubbling in her chest as she arranged trays of finger foods with Chloe’s help. For once, she wanted this day to be less about the heavy burdens her friends always seemed to be carrying, and more about laughter, lightness, and the reminder that they were still young, still capable of celebrating something as simple as a birthday.Chloe had arrived first, dressed neatly in a simple black dress that brought out the sharp seriousness in her eyes. Though she had smiled, there was a weight on her shoulders that she hadn’t been able to shrug off since s

Julia sat in silence after Adams’s words, her hands folded in her lap though her fingers wouldn’t stop trembling. For years, she had told herself the same thing. That Chance wasn’t ready. That she could keep him out of it. That the fire which had consumed Steven O’Connor didn’t have to consume her son. It was easier to believe in excuses than to confront the inevitability. But Adams’s return had ripped the veil away. Her sigh deepened as memories rushed back. The four of them in their youth—Steven, Adams, Helsin, and herself dreaming of rewriting history. Steven, always brash and unshakably confident, with the Aurelian ring gleaming on his hand. His promise that the ring would open doors to a future that none of them could yet imagine. And then… his sudden death.“He’s too young,” she whispered at last, almost as if saying it aloud might make it true. “He’s too reckless."Adams’s eyes softened. He had always been the calm one among their group, the one who tempered Steven’s fire with

Julia turned, her heart still pounding from the adrenaline of the day, only to freeze in place when she saw the figure standing a few steps away. For a moment, the chaos of the swearing-in, the assassination attempt, the police sirens outside—it all dimmed.“Adams?” she whispered, almost disbelieving.Adams Smith. He hadn’t changed much—still tall, broad-shouldered, with the same sharp jawline that had once made half the campus swoon. There were streaks of silver at his temples now, subtle but unmistakable, lending him an air of gravitas that only deepened the commanding presence he’d always carried. His dark suit was immaculately tailored, but it wasn’t his appearance that made Julia’s heart melt.It was the memories.Adams had been part of their inseparable quartet back then—Steven O’Connor, Julia, Helsin, and Adams himself. The four of them had been young, ambitious, reckless, convinced they were destined to change the world. Then Steven had died, Helsin had pursued a career in aca

The alley dead-ended into a narrow brick wall, and Chance knew he had him. The assassin skidded to a halt, his boots scraping against the gravel, shoulders heaving from the chase. Slowly, deliberately, he turned. The hood came down. The harsh afternoon light caught his face—sharp features, eyes like chips of flint, cold and merciless.“You must be braver than you look,” the assassin sneered, his lips curling in a humorless smile. “Not many would follow me this far. Foolish, but brave.”Chance didn’t flinch. His breath was still ragged, but his stance was firm, shoulders squared, fists curled at his sides. “Who the hell are you? Who sent you?” His voice carried an edge, demanding, though beneath it was the fire of raw anger. The assassin tilted his head, chuckling darkly. “And why would I tell you that? You think you’ve won because you cornered me? No, boy. The mistake was yours. Because now…” He raised the pistol, the black steel glinting ominously in the sunlight, “…you’ve seen my fa

Isaiah and the golden haired boy held each other's gaze for far longer than anyone should be able to deem comfortable. Nathan's eyes burroweed into Isaiah's soul, as well, as Isaiah's eyes proved to be a window to a mysterious soul—a person that should not be messed with.Isaiah, as well as his father, Anthony who had his eyes towards somewhere else on purpose just to avoid the sharp glare of his foster son, wondered when the staring will end. Isaiah longed for it to end, but it seemed the person he was staring at was adamant to make him uncomfortable. But soon enough, Nathan smiled, dropping his gaze and squeezing his hand around the railings he held. "Is that your friend, father?" Anthony flinched at being called father by Nathan. Isaiah noticed it, and he thought the boy up ahead of him would notice it too. That his so called father just did not like it so much to be called his father.Anthony turned around to him. "Yes," he said, a voice with a certain shiver. Isaiah could hear

"You mean you did not hear anything?" Lawrence asked, with the same gentle tone as usual. "And again, I am asking you what?" Jenny asked, trying her best to feign ignorance. Her lips were pursed tight, sealing off every word that might leak out of it to betray her real thoughts and feelings.""Hmm..." Lawrence put his hand on his chin. "That's weird, I thought it was pretty loud.""Hey, I don't really have the time to be standing here having chit chat with you. I have friends to go be with." Jenny hoped feigning impatience with the man would set her free from the questions."Ah, okay" he said. "If that is how it is, then go."Jenny pulled out her air pods. "Maybe the reason I did not really hear anything was because I had my air pods on.""It's okay. It's silly of me to think that you heard anything. The particular rest room you were in is far from the door.""Okay." Jenny began walking away, feigning confusion. "But what exactly did I not hear that you heard?" "Oh it's nothing. It
