The colossal mutant charged. Each footfall cracked the asphalt beneath its immense weight, sending loose concrete skittering across the ruined avenue.

Ordinary zombies scattered from its path as though instinct alone warned them not to stand before it. Even from the distant walls of Fortress Aegis, soldiers could feel the vibration rolling through the streets.

"There it is," one guard breathed, lowering his binoculars. "That's the end."

Captain Elena kept her rifle trained on the giant creature, though she knew the distance was far beyond an accurate shot."No," she murmured. We're about to witness something we've never seen before."

Below, Ștefan stood alone. Every instinct screamed at him to run. The creature towered over him, nearly four meters tall. Jagged plates of bone protruded from its shoulders and forearms, while faded military fatigues clung to patches of grey flesh.

One eye had been destroyed long ago, leaving only a scarred socket, but the remaining crimson eye burned with unsettling awareness. The System's warning still hovered before him.

Tier Mutant Detected.Threat Level: Extreme. The giant raised its enormous claw. Several civilians watching from the walls cried out.

"It's going to kill him!"

The mutant took one final step. Then...It stopped. The crimson eye fixed upon Ștefan. For several agonising heartbeats, neither moved. The wind drifted between them, carrying dust through the abandoned street.

Then the impossible happened. The giant slowly lowered its massive body until one knee struck the pavement with enough force to crack the road. Its head bowed. Every ordinary zombie immediately followed.

An ocean of undead knelt before one man. Gasps spread across the battlements. Adrian Varga's expression hardened.

"No..."His voice barely escaped his lips. That's impossible."

The System chimed again. Royal  Authority Accepted. Elite Subject Identified.Ștefan stared at the kneeling giant. The creature looked terrifying. Yet beneath that terrifying exterior, there was no hostility. Only recognition. Cautiously, he stepped closer.

The giant remained perfectly still. Its breathing sounded like grinding stone. As Ștefan reached out, his hand hesitated only inches from the creature's scarred forehead.

"What are you?" he whispered. The mutant's lips moved awkwardly. Its jaw seemed unfamiliar with speech. Finally, one broken word emerged....King..."

Ștefan froze. He looked into the creature's eye. For the briefest moment, something flickered there. Not hunger. Not rage.Recognition.

"You remember how to speak?"The mutant struggled again....Little..."The voice faded into an inhuman growl....Little..."

Whatever memory had surfaced disappeared before it could become whole. A pang settled in Ștefan's chest. This monster had once been human. Perhaps a soldier.Perhaps a father.Perhaps someone who had stood on these same streets before the world ended.

The virus had stolen almost everything.Almost.The System responded before he could dwell on the thought. Evolution increases intelligence. Higher evolution restores fragments of memory and cognition. He frowned.

"So they aren't empty."

Negative. Memory degradation varies by evolutionary stage. The implication struck him harder than he expected. For decades, humanity had treated every zombie as nothing more than a beast. If the System spoke the truth...

Some of them still carried broken pieces of the people they had once been. His father had taught him that every life possessed value. Could that lesson extend even here? He looked at the giant once more.

"You deserve a name."The mutant slowly raised its head. You can't remain just another monster."

He studied the weathered military tags hanging around its neck, but corrosion had erased every letter. Only one symbol remained.

An engraved "M."After a moment's thought, Ștefan nodded.Magnus."The creature repeated the unfamiliar sound....Magnus..."

The name seemed to anchor something inside it. The System immediately displayed another notification. Elite Unit Named. Compatibility Confirmed. Evolution Path Available. Golden symbols surrounded Magnus.

Energy flowed through his massive frame as cracks spread across the bone armour covering his shoulders. His posture straightened. The cloudiness in his remaining eye lessened. When he looked back at Ștefan, there was unmistakable awareness behind the crimson glow. He bowed again.

"My..."His voice remained rough....King."

The transformation ended as quickly as it had begun.Ștefan stared in astonishment. The creature had changed. Not merely in strength. In mind. On the fortress wall, Elena lowered her binoculars.

"He's evolving."The officer beside her blinked. That's impossible."So was everything we've seen today."Far below, Magnus rose to his full height and moved to stand slightly behind Ștefan rather than before him.

Not as a captor. As a guardian. The distinction mattered.Ștefan drew a slow breath. If the System could truly awaken intelligence in the undead, then his power was far more dangerous than commanding mindless monsters.

He could build an army. He could create leaders. He could reshape the balance between the living and the dead. The thought should have thrilled him. Instead, it frightened him. Power this great demanded restraint.

Otherwise, he would become exactly the tyrant Adrian believed him to be. Before he could gather his thoughts, every zombie in sight lifted its head in the same direction. Magnus stiffened.

The newly evolved general took one cautious step in front of Ștefan. His growl carried unmistakable urgency....Danger..."From every street beyond the ruined district came the sound of shuffling feet. One street.

Then another. Then dozens more. The noise swelled until it resembled the distant roar of an approaching ocean. Buildings trembled. Dust drifted from shattered windows.

The System flashed a crimson warning. Regional  Undead Movement Detected.Estimated Number: Unknown.Ștefan climbed onto the wreckage of an overturned truck and looked toward the horizon.

Every road leading into the city was filling with figures. Not hundreds. Not thousands. An endless tide of zombies was marching toward him.

And at their head, barely visible through the haze, walked a lone silhouette that moved with deliberate purpose as though it already knew exactly where its king stood waiting.

The sealed orders rested on the table between her and Colonel Adrian Varga.Around them, the strategy room buzzed with officers preparing patrol routes and supply convoys, yet Elena barely heard them. Her attention remained fixed on the single sheet of paper bearing the fortress seal.Target: Ștefan Drăghici.Priority: Eliminate or Capture. She had read those words three times. They never became easier to accept. Adrian folded his hands behind his back."You've hunted every major mutant within two hundred kilometres."I have."You know the wasteland better than anyone.""I do."Then you'll find him."Elena looked up. And if I discover the reports are wrong?"Adrian's expression remained unreadable. Until they surrounded a group of raiders."He drew a shaky breath. The zombies ignored the civilians.""They attacked only the bandits."Uneasy whispers spread through the assembled officers. Captain Elena stood near the rear of the chamber, saying nothing. She had witnessed enough from the battlements to know the scout wasn't exaggerating. If anything, he had understated the truth.Ad

Through the strange connection linking king and general, Ștefan felt Magnus's awareness spread across the surrounding streets like ripples over still water."Humans," Magnus conveyed. Many?" Ștefan asked silently. The giant paused. Six... living."A second pulse reached him through the mental link. Others... wrong."Bandits.Ștefan had seen enough of humanity to understand what that meant.
