2025-03-07 05:00:47The moment Ethan heard George mention that a monster was among them a stifling sensation filled his heart.
An ominous feeling of dread arose in him and subconsciously he gripped the metal rebar in his hands tighter while coming towards the front of old Jack and the two kids.
“What?! A monster among us?”
" How can a monster be among us!”
" Mum am afraid!”
Seeing the panicked expression on the faces of the survivors,George smirked while thinking to himself.
“What if I add some incentives to it? They'll probably talk faster!"
" Whoever can point out any individual who you noticed behaving strangely will be given special treatment."
The moment he said so,everywhere went quiet for a while before they all started conversing excited,hushed tones.
What he was doing was very simple,it was just pure psychology. He had observed that Ethan was isolated from the rest of the survivors. If his guess wasn't wrong,he probably didn't have a good relationship with the other tenants save that old man and the two kids with him.
Since he wasn't that acclimatized with the other tenants there would be a sure bet that someone would turn him in.
Ethan on the other hand became increasingly unsettled,he wasn't sure why he felt this much dread,he wasn't a monster nor had he shown any signs of becom…ing one…
Wait a minute,he had kinda nearly became one.
Like a bolt from the blue,he remembered that one time in the corridor when he experienced those strange hallucinations. And the other time when he was inside old Edward's bathroom.However since then he hadn't experienced anything remotely close to that.
Thankfully he wasn't seen by anyone,right?
He regretted thinking in that direction cause in the next moment….
“I know something!"
I've seen someone suspicious!”
…two voices which he immediately recognized broke through the cacophony of voices.
“Damn it!”
Cursing he didn't even need to look in the direction the voices came from to know who they were.

Smirking,George knew that his bet was on the money,what remained now was for the two—no one of them to point Ethan out for his scheme to work.
“Oh?! You mean that you have some clues on who the monster is?”
" I ha-"
" I know who it is."
The two of them glared at each other as spoke at the same time,they were both hell bent on being the one that received the promised “special’ advantages unfortunately for old Rodger he had already lost out to both youthfulness and gender.
“Okay you.”
Pointing at Jessica,George turned to face old Rodger.
"I hope this uncle will understand that she spoke first,furthermore you're an elder while she is like a daughter to you,don't you agree?"
If a drop of water was placed on old Rodgers head, it would probably evaporate from how angry he was.
The fuck was she first!
But he knew better than to say anything otherwise and he simply nodded.
“Good thank you.."
Then turning to Jessica he asked her.
“Who is the person you suspect is a monster. Say the truth because you're saving the lives of everyone here. And don't worry about your protection,I'm here with you.”
The moment he said that it was as if the chains binding Jessica's mouth had been undone as she instantly pointed at Ethan.
“Him! He's the monster you've been looking for!"
Immediately,a vacuum formed around Ethan as everyone except for the kids and old Edward who were still staying behind him.
Glaring at George,Ethan was about to flare up only for old Edward to be a step ahead of him.
“What do you mean by this?!”
Chuckling lightly,George raised a eyebrow. .
“Am trying to catch a monster that has probably hed countless lives,what else? If there's nothing move out of my way and let me save these people from a possible danger."
Unwilling to back down,old Edward shot back.
"You'd better stay back,you just can't start pointing fingers at people claiming that they are monsters can you? And again there's no evidence showing that he is or was a monster! Basing it on what that selfish slut said is very unbecoming of you!”
Hearing old Edward stand up for him,Ethan felt a part of his heart become soft and indebted.
“ Yeah leave our elder brother alone!"
“Uncle Ethan is a good guy,he can never be a monster!"
Seeing the two kids also come out, Ethan actually felt like he had found what family really meant. These were the only people willing to stay by his side even when he was being called a monster.
Although,he didn't know the motive George had to be against him nor why he was feeling dread. He swore to ensure that old Edward and the kids never suffered I'm even if they weren't able to be part of George's rescue party.
“Oh! Are you sure about that?"
George asked with a derisive chuckle that made one feel an urgent urge to punch his face.
“Yeah do your worst!" Young man I'll have you know that I was once”...

Four people four pillars!
Without bothering for old Edward to complete his sentence,George lightly flicked his fingers shooting four pillars of flames at Ethan's group.
Naturally,Ethan was able to dodge after receiving a small burn on his shoulder. The same could not be said for old Edward and the two kids though.
“Argh!”
“Uncle Ethan, help!”
“It hurts!!"
Pained screams came from the three of them as they rolled around on the floor trying to put out the flames on them.
" Nooooo!”
Without fearing if the flame would spread or how hot it was ,Ethan rushed towards them while trying to out the fire. Sadly it was all for naughty as he could only watch as the three of them were burnt to a crisp.
While everything seemed like it took long,it was actually fast as the flames George used were super super hot!
“Hmmm! Useless!"
Looking at Ethan's figure kneeling on the floor, George spat before leaving towards the main survivors.
Holding unto the now burnt figures,a deep heart wrenching pain tore through Ethan's heart as he held the still hot bodies close to him while tears fell from his eyes.
They were innocent!
He didn’t know how long he had continued crying for when he suddenly heard a voice in his head.
“Do you see now? You lost everything after you gave up on this power. You could have saved them you know?"
" Shut up!”
Still holding unto the corpses,Ethan yelled back in his head. He recognized this voice,it was from the monsterized version of himself which he saw in a mirror long ago.
“Tsk,tsk,tsk, is this how you're going to let them die in vain! You killed them Ethan,it's all your fault."
I said stop!”..
However,the voice wasn't ready to stop as it continued.
" A weakling like you wants me to shut up—cracked. In your dreams. But am giving you one last chance. Once more join us,become one of us and I'll grant you power to take revenge instantly!”
Tears streaming down his face,Ethan considered for a moment. Involuntarily,memories of how he had been bullied and hated by everyone even his own family,how caring and kind old Edward was or how jovial,those two kids were. Yes he couldn't leave them like this!
Even if it meant becoming a monster to achieve his goals.
With a determined look he muttered
“I accept."

Afternoon. The time of the day when the sun was at its peak. Due to the special geography of Barnes city and it's environs it received a lot of sun daily. On the highway leading out of Barnes city,a truck could be seen rushing past the buildings . There was a black motorcycle in the back while four people consisting of three men and a lady sat surrounding it. Inside the truck there were two men,one driving while the other was well not really doing anything bringing the total to six.
