Evan stood frozen.
The words felt heavy, hanging in the space between them. You were the one who killed me.
"What?" he managed to whisper.
Adam stepped back from the doorway, gesturing inward. "Come in. We should talk."
Evan didn't budge. "I'm not going in there."
"Fine." Adam leaned against the doorframe, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp. "We can talk out here."
A heavy silence fell. Above the motel office, a flickering light hummed and buzzed. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked into the night.
"I don't even know what you're talking about," Evan said, his voice trembling slightly.
"Yes, you do." Adam tilted his head, studying him. "You remember the old timeline. I can see it in your eyes that look people get when they've seen way too much."
Evan’s hand drifted toward the knife tucked in his pocket. "Who are you?"
"Adam Cole. I was a survivor. Just like you." He paused, his expression darkening. "But I died differently. You killed me."
Evan just stared, speechless. "I don't kill people."
"You killed me." Adam’s voice was flat, devoid of anger. He was simply stating a fact. "Six years into the apocalypse. I was already losing it back then. I was doing things... terrible things. You stopped me."
Evan felt the world begin to spin. "I don't remember any of that."
"You don't remember a lot of things. That's the problem." Adam stepped out of the doorway, closing the gap between them. "The Administrator messes with your head. They make you forget the truth and replace it with things that never even happened."
Evan instinctively took a step back. "Stay where you are."
Adam stopped immediately, raising his hands in a gesture of peace. "I'm not here to hurt you. I'm here because I need your help."
"With what?"
"Finding the person who's been following you."
Evan froze. "What?"
"Someone has been watching your every move. I felt the ripple before I even reached the city. It was strong. Different." Adam looked him dead in the eye. "It isn't me, and it isn't you. It's someone else."
Evan’s mind raced through possibilities. Sarah. He has to be talking about Sarah.
"Who?" he asked, though his gut already knew the answer.
"I don't have a name yet. But I've been tracking them. They've moved through three different cities in the last week, always staying just one step ahead of me." Adam’s jaw tightened. "And they've been getting very close to you."
Evan remained silent, unable to find his voice.
"You know who it is, don't you?" Adam pressed.
"No."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
Adam studied his face for a long moment, then gave a slow, defeated nod. "Okay. Keep your secrets. But I'm telling you the truth: whoever this person is, they aren't a friend. They're a vessel."
A chill ran down Evan's spine. Sarah is a vessel?
"That's impossible," Evan countered. "She has a System. Vessels don't have Systems."
"Vessels don't need them. The System is just a tool a shortcut." Adam’s eyes narrowed. "The real connection is to the soul. And she’s been connected for a long time."
Evan wanted to dismiss him as a madman, but a nagging realization began to click into place. She lied about Marcus. She knows too much. She always seems to show up exactly when she’s needed.
"She said she was reborn," Evan said, his voice hollow.
"She's lying."
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because I've seen it happen before. In the old timeline. Vessels can mimic everything memories, emotions, personalities. They can make you trust them." Adam paused, his voice dropping. "They can even make you love them."
Not love, Evan thought bitterly. Trust. She just wanted me to trust her.
"Why tell me this now?" Evan asked.
"Because if she gets what she wants, everyone dies. Including your sister."
Evan’s heart seemed to stop beating. Lily.
"She doesn't know about Lily," Evan insisted.
"She's been watching you for two days. She knows everything."
Suddenly, Evan's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out. It was a message from Sarah.
Where are you? I need to see you. It's urgent.
He stared at the glowing screen, paralyzed.
"What does she want?" Adam asked.
"I don't know."
"Don't answer it. Don't meet her. Not until we know more."
Evan looked up at him, blinking. "We?"
"Like it or not, you need help. And I'm the only one who knows what's coming." Adam reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper, handing it to Evan. "This is everything I have. Names, locations, the third reborn, the third vessel... the one following you."
Evan unfolded the paper. It was a list of five names. When he reached the fourth one, his blood turned to ice.
Sarah Vance. No known address. Flame System. D-rank. Vessel candidate.
He looked up at Adam, breathless.
"She was already on my list," Adam said quietly. "I just didn't have a name to attach to her until now."
The phone buzzed again.
Evan. Please. I need to talk to you. Something's happening.
Evan shoved the phone away. "What do I do?"
"Keep her close. But don't let her realize you know." Adam stepped back into the shadows. "And watch your sister."
Evan's throat felt tight. "Lily..."
"If the vessel gets what she's after, Lily becomes the next host." Adam turned to walk away, then stopped. "One more thing."
"What?"
"Don't trust the woman in the car. The Director. She isn't who she claims to be."
Evan stared at him, stunned. "How do you know about the Director?"
Adam offered a small smile, though it never reached his eyes. "Because in my timeline, she was the one who handed me over to the Administrator."
Without another word, he walked into the motel. The door clicked shut behind him.
Evan stood alone in the dark, his mind a storm of conflicting truths. He had the list in one hand, the phone in his pocket, and a crushing weight of realization in his chest.
Sarah is a vessel. Lily is in danger. The Director is a lie.
And Adam is the only one telling the truth.
He looked down at the paper one last time. Sarah Vance. Vessel candidate.
She's been playing me from the very beginning.
He started walking, intent on finding answers, but then he stopped. He spun around.
The doorway was empty. Adam was gone.

I'd be disappointed if you actually climbed in."She killed the engine, stepped out, and leaned back against the car door."Walk with me," she suggested. "You can keep your distance if it makes you more comfortable."As she started down the sidewalk, Evan followed, keeping a steady ten feet between them."Who are you?" he asked."I work for an organization that's been tracking unusual activity for the last six months." She shot him a quick glance. "People waking up with abilities before the official Awakening. Dreams of things that haven't happened yet. Ripples in the System."Evan kept his expression completely flat. "I don't know what you're talking about.""Of course you don't." She stopped in her tracks and turned to face him. "April 2nd. Chicago. She looked up as he entered the room."Morning," she said."Morning."He took his seat, and she slid a plate toward him."Thanks."They ate in silence. It wasn't a heavy or awkward silence, nor was it fueled by anger. It was just... quiet."You okay?" he eventually asked."Yeah." She took a bite. "I’ve been thinking about what you said.""And?""I don't get it. None of it," she admitted, meeting his eyes. "But you're my brother. "I found my name."He crossed the room and sat heavily on the edge of the mattress. "You shouldn't have read that.""It was just sitting there. Open. On your desk." Her voice began to crack.
