CHAPTER 56: THE HERALD
We made it to the capital in under three days. The roads were a blur, faces and villages passing in flashes. I barely slept. When we finally reached the gates, Arden was waiting for us, standing ramrod straight but with shadows under his eyes. The regency hadn’t been kind to him. He led us off the main hall, down a narrow corridor, and into a cramped meeting room that felt more like a storage closet than a council chamber. He closed the door tight. “The king’s in the eastern tower,” Arden said. “Since we brought him back, he’s barely spoken to anyone. Won’t see anyone but you.”I stared. “Why just me?”“He says you’re the only one who’ll understand.” Arden’s jaw worked. “He keeps saying the seal is wrong. That we did it wrong.”I shook my head. “The seal’s working. I can feel it.”“For now.” His voice dropped. “But the king’s adamant. He says there’s a seventh bloodline, one we missed. Says the seal won’t hold. Not for decades months. Maybe less.”Thess looked like she’d seen a ghost.
CHAPTER 55: B RANK
He was quicker than anyone I’d ever fought.Right away, I caught on. He didn’t waste a single move. No big tells. Just smooth, practiced footwork like he’d spent years drilling every little detail. His blade darted low, then shot high, then snapped back down, all to mess with my defenses.I retreated, kept my guard tight. Just watched.Everyone in the crowd expected me to win. They’d seen me pull it off before, so the arena felt almost still. But this fight wasn’t the same. This guy had watched every bout I’d had. He knew my tells. He knew I liked to work from my left, that I liked to wait things out and spot patterns. So he gave me nothing. He changed pace with every move. Swapped hands mid-fight. Feinted, struck, feinted again. No rhythm. Just confusion. I searched for a pattern, but there wasn’t one.He caught my shoulder. Then my ribs. I staggered but didn’t drop.“Come on,” he said. “Show me what the anchor can do.”I kept quiet. The council had forbidden the seal. I had to fight
CHAPTER 54: THE BINDING
The Hollow King let out a scream. Suddenly, everything went white. No sight, no sound, just feeling. I felt six bloodlines surging through that document, flooding the vault, coursing straight through me. The Hollow King clawed at the seal, desperate to break free, but the six of us held tight. No! it screamed. You promised. You promised.“We’re keeping the promise,” I said. This isn’t what I was promised. This is a cage.“It’s not a cage. It’s a contract. Six bloodlines, all connected. You’re not alone anymore.”The Hollow King shoved against the binding, trying everything to fight through. But we didn’t let go. The sigils blazed on the document, on the walls everywhere. The whole stronghold lit up.Then, the struggle eased. The Hollow King’s resistance faded.Six, it whispered. All six. No one’s done that in three thousand years.“Are you going to accept it?”I’m tired. I’ve been on my own for so long. I don’t want to fight anymore.“Then don’t.”I’ll stop. But you have to promise me
CHAPTER 53: THE WATCHER
Five bloodlines leftDraven: me: the anchor. Draveth: Thess: the keeper. Varga: Lira: the last of her kind Warden: Garran Voss: the one who ran away.Weaver: Tomas Rell: the record keeper. One was missing. The Watchers. Corvin’s family. We rode out to the Ashgrave estate the next morning.Corvin hadn’t been back since spring. He’d written to his father, but never visited. The place hadn’t changed: same old trees, same iron gates, the house still brooding under centuries of rain and wind. Yet it felt emptier, like the air itself was waiting for something.Lord Ashgrave met us in his study. He looked older than I remembered. More worn around the edges. He’d stepped down as head of house, but he still lingered here. He was halfway through a book when we walked in; he set it aside and looked up.“Corvin,” he said. “You brought guests.”Corvin sat down, not bothering with small talk. “We need to talk. About the Watchers.”Lord Ashgrave’s face didn’t change, but his hands gripped the cha
CHAPTER 52: THE WEAVERS
We spent three days in the stronghold.Lira buried herself in the archives. Voss wandered the halls, running his fingers over the stone, almost like he could reach back in time. Thess sat cross-legged in the corner, eyes closed, focusing on her mark and the seal, whispering to herself, searching for answers. Corvin and I sparred beneath the vaulted ceiling, the sound of our swords ringing out again and again. On the third day, Lira looked up from a battered journal with something new in her voice."It's the Weavers," she said. The journal was open on the table. "People always thought they were the scribes' guild, but that's wrong. The guild came later. The Weavers were older a family, connected by blood, just like the others.""Which family?" I asked."It doesn't say. Just that the Weavers were the keepers of the word. They wrote the binding text. They tracked the six bloodlines. They made sure everyone remembered the promises." She hesitated. "After the war, the Weavers disappeared.
CHAPTER 51: THE ROAD NORTH
We left Harrow’s Point just as the sun pulled itself over the horizon.Voss joined us for the journey. He packed what little he owned into a single bag. No goodbyes nobody to say them to, really. The road north dragged on at least three weeks, maybe longer if the weather turned. First came Ashford Pass, then the northern hills, then the mountains. Those same mountains where I’d patched up the Draven anchor. Where Kade Orsini dug up the second fragment.I kept the stone key in my pocket. It felt almost alive, pulsing every few minutes. Like it had its own heartbeat.“It’s taking us north,” Voss said one morning. “My grandmother always said Wardens could find their way home. She said the key would show me how.”“Did she tell you anything else?” I asked.“She said the Wardens were the first line of defense before the Draven anchor, before keepers or seals. They built the northern stronghold. Carved it right from the mountain. Turned it into a real fortress.” He hesitated. “She also said
