Chapter Five

Night settled over the neighborhood, quiet and ordinary on the surface. But Ethan felt the difference instantly.

Pressure.

A shift in the air.

Predators pretending to be shadows.

He didn’t stop walking.

He didn’t slow down.

But he knew:

Marcus Slate had already made his first move.

THE MEN IN THE ALLEY

Three blocks from the Dawson residence, Ethan turned into a narrow alley. Not because he needed a shortcut—because he sensed the trap waiting for him.

The moment he stepped in, the exit behind him closed.

A tall man in a leather jacket stepped out.

Another dropped from a low rooftop.

A third leaned against a wall, flipping a metal baton.

They surrounded him with the confidence of men who had done this many times.

The leader smirked.

“Ethan Cole. The prodigal son returns.”

Ethan’s expression didn’t change.

“You talk too much.”

The man blinked—caught off-guard.

Then he laughed.

“You don’t even want to know who sent us?”

“Marcus Slate,” Ethan said calmly.

All three froze.

Ethan sighed.

“I said… you talk too much.”

THE FIGHT

The leader barely had time to lift his weapon before Ethan moved.

A single step.

A twist of his wrist.

Strike—precise, silent, devastating.

The man’s arm went numb instantly.

He dropped his knife.

Before the others could react, Ethan flicked the blade with his foot—sending it spinning upward. He caught it midair and slammed the hilt backwards into the jaw of the second man.

CRACK.

The man collapsed.

The third attacker panicked and lunged with the baton.

Ethan didn’t even look at him.

He sidestepped, grabbed the man’s wrist, and flipped him onto the ground with one smooth motion.

All three were down in under eight seconds.

Ethan tossed the knife aside.

“Tell Slate,” he said, stepping over the groaning bodies,

“If he wants to play… he needs stronger pieces.”

He continued walking as if nothing had happened.

Not a scratch on him.

BACK AT THE DAWSON HOUSE

Inside the living room, Lila Dawson (Ethan’s wife) sat stiffly, still processing the earlier scene.

Vivian hovered nervously nearby.

Tanya kept pacing.

Lila finally spoke.

“You’re sure… those men were bowing to Ethan? Our Ethan?”

Vivian swallowed.

“It… it happened.”

Tanya threw her hands up.

“So what now? What does he want? Is he going to punish us? Is he—”

A knock on the door cut her off.

All three women stiffened.

Vivian opened it carefully.

A uniformed officer stood there.

“Good evening. Are you the Dawsons?”

Lila’s heart dropped.

“What happened?”

The officer cleared his throat.

“A few houses down… three armed men were found unconscious in an alley. The patrol suspects it was a targeted attack.”

Tanya gasped.

“On who?!”

The officer answered calmly.

“We believe… it was meant for a man named Ethan Cole.”

Silence slammed into the room.

The officer added,

“If he’s a relative of yours, tell him to be careful. Whoever targeted him… they’re dangerous.”

He left.

Vivian shut the door with shaking hands.

Lila whispered,

“Why would someone attack Ethan…?”

But deep down, she felt something cold.

Who exactly had she married?

MEANWHILE: MARCUS SLATE’S OFFICE

The injured men knelt before Marcus Slate, breathing hard.

“Failed?” Slate whispered.

The leader trembled.

“Sir… he was too fast…”

Slate’s smile was thin and cruel.

“Good. I was worried exile may have softened him.”

He stood and walked toward a large digital map on the wall.

“Prepare Phase Two.”

The men stiffened.

“S-Sir? Isn’t that too early? The Cole family—”

Slate turned his head slowly.

“You think I fear the Coles?”

His voice dropped.

“They should fear me.”

He tapped a red marker glowing on the screen.

“Tonight… we remind Ethan Cole that the city belongs to me.”

FINAL SCENE

Ethan walked along the main road when Commander Hale’s car pulled up beside him.

Hale stepped out immediately.

“Sir, we detected additional hostile signals. Slate is pushing harder than expected.”

Ethan looked up at the night sky.

“Let him.”

Hale hesitated.

“Why aren’t you worried?”

Ethan finally answered:

“Because he doesn’t understand something…”

He slid his hands into his pockets.

“I didn’t return to hide.”

“I returned to take everything back.”

Hale lowered his head in respect.

And the city, for the first time in years, shifted again—

this time in Ethan’s favor.
