chapter 2

The moon hung low over Silver Bridge, but Jason barely noticed the cold wind biting through his thin jacket. He stood by the roadside, waiting for someone he hadn't seen in four years.

The heavy glass doors of the Snakehole Lounge swung open. Rose walked out, her arm looped tightly through John’s.

When her eyes landed on Jason standing under the dim streetlamp, her expression immediately soured into disgust. She clearly assumed he was waiting for her.

"Are you seriously still here?" Rose sneered. "Do you have any dignity left?"

John let out a condescending chuckle, adjusting his expensive collar as he looked down his nose at the young man. "Don't waste your breath, babe. People this broke don’t actually have dignity. They just have stubbornness."

To emphasize his point, John pulled a sleek key fob from his pocket and pressed the button. Nearby, the headlights of a pristine, matte-black Lamborghini flashed to life, slicing through the darkness of the alley. He smirked, making sure the luxury logo on the key caught the neon glare, soaking up his own status.

Rose’s smile widened. She pressed herself closer to his side, practically clinging to him as if to shield her prize from the shadows.

Despite the mocking, a faint, knowing smile touched Jason's lips. John frowned, confused by the reaction, but he didn't have time to dwell on it.

The roar of a heavy engine shattered the quiet. A black, armored SUV surged out of nowhere, speeding straight at the parked Lamborghini. Before John could even shout, the SUV slammed into the sports car with a sickening crunch of metal and shattering glass, completely caving in the driver's side door.

The SUV ground into reverse. Its heavy steel brush guard was deeply scraped and dented from the impact, but the beast of a vehicle was still perfectly functional. The driver's side door opened, and a young woman stepped out.

"What the hell did you just do? Who are you?" John raged, his face turning an ugly shade of red. "You're going to pay for—"

His voice hitched in his throat.

The woman standing by the crushed SUV carried an aura that demanded absolute attention. She was stunning, tall and sharply dressed, but it was the cold, mischievous smile playing on her lips that silenced the alleyway.

A few wealthy patrons leaving the lounge paused, recognizing her instantly. Murmurs of "Gina Pike" rippled through the small crowd, followed by hushed warnings to step back. She wasn't someone to cross.

John’s fury faltered. He was caught between rage over his ruined car and a sleazy, desperate instinct to charm his way out of the confrontation. He took a hesitant step forward, his anger giving way to a forced, oily smile. Rose, sensing the shift, tried to pull him back, but he yanked his arm free.

Gina completely ignored John, walking past him as if he were nothing but dirt on the pavement. She walked straight to Jason. The fierce, untouchable air surrounding her melted the second she looked at him.

She threw her arms around him, pulling him into a tight embrace.

"I missed you so much," her voice was soft, naked emotion written across her face.

Standing a few feet away, John and Rose froze, entirely stunned by the sight.

When Gina stepped back, her eyes caught the dried blood on Jason's forehead. The warmth in her expression vanished, replaced instantly by an icy glare.

"Don't fall for his tricks, he's just a broke loser," Rose hissed, stepping forward and pointing a manicured finger at Gina. "And who do you think you are, driving like a—"

A sharp, ringing slap cut her off.

Gina had moved faster than Rose could track. The impact was hard enough to stagger the other woman, sending her stumbling backward until she fell hard onto the concrete, clutching her stinging cheek in shock.

"No one asked for your opinion," Gina said coldly. She turned her piercing gaze back to John. "Now, you tell me. Is this your handiwork?" she asked, gesturing to Jason's bruised head.

"Take them down!" John roared, his face purple with humiliation and panic. "Break them both!"

At his command, a dozen heavy-set bodyguards rushed out from the shadows of the lounge's exterior, lunging straight at Gina and Jason to box them in.

But before a single hand could touch Jason, a dark figure detached itself from the shadows behind the armored SUV.

A blur of motion cut through the air. A brutal kick landed squarely against the chest of the leading bodyguard, launching the massive man backward until he crashed violently into a nearby dumpster.

The new arrival stepped into the light, his posture perfectly rigid. It was Seth Sting, Jason’s personal bodyguard from the days before his four-year trial had even begun.

John screamed frantically at his men to swarm them, but Seth moved with lethal precision. In less than a minute, he tore through the crowd. He dodged wild, heavy swings and dropped almost every single bodyguard to the asphalt with brutal, efficient strikes.

Finally, only one man remained standing.

It was John’s strongest enforcer—the exact same scar-faced bodyguard who had struck Jason earlier and thrown him into the alley. The large man lunged forward, trying to tackle Seth one-on-one. But despite his massive size, he was completely outmatched. Seth parried a heavy punch, broke the man's guard, and drove him to his knees with a punishing strike to the solar plexus.

Seth looked back at Jason, his voice flat and professional. "Young Master, was it this man who caused your injury?"

Jason didn't have to say a word. His silence was answer enough.

Without a shred of mercy, Seth gripped the scar-faced man's arm, locking the joint. A sharp, sickening crack echoed down the alleyway as he dislocated and broke the bodyguard's limb on the spot, leaving the man groaning in the dirt.

Gina turned back to her brother, a dangerous, satisfied smile returning to her lips. She glanced at Rose, who was cowering on the ground, and then locked eyes with John, who was now visibly shivering.

"Now, back to you," Gina purred, slowly walking toward him. The alley fell dead silent, save for the terrifying, rhythmic click of her heels against the concrete.

At 9:00 AM the next day, Jason woke up to the sound of Colman snoring loudly, sprawled across his mattress without a care in the world. Jason sat up and glanced toward the far corner of the dorm room. Matthew’s bed was completely empty, the sheets perfectly undisturbed. He hadn't come home last night. Jason could only imagine what kind of miserable corner Matthew was currently hiding in to lick his wounds. Not wanting to disturb Colman’s deep sleep, Jason quietly gathered his things, washed up, and headed out of the dorm alone. The economics lecture that had been abruptly canceled the previous afternoon had been rescheduled for 10:00 AM today. Despite the fact that the rescheduling was entirely impromptu and sent out late at night, when Jason walked through the heavy double doors of the lecture hall, he was surprised to find the massive, 800-seat auditorium almost completely full. Even stranger, as Jason scanned the tiered rows of seating, he quickly realized something highly unu

Jason didn't waste a single word. He picked up the leather folder, barely glancing at the astronomical number printed at the bottom of the receipt. Without blinking, he picked up his matte black credit card and handed it to the waiter. "Split it down the middle," Jason said calmly. "Put my half on this." The sommelier took the heavy metal card, his eyes widening slightly at its weight and unmistakable design. He quickly produced a wireless payment terminal and inserted the chip. *Beep. Approved.* The small machine immediately printed out a receipt. The entire transaction went through perfectly, without even the slightest pause or request for authorization. The entire private room froze. The mocking laughter that had filled the air just seconds ago died instantly, replaced by a suffocating silence. Matthew’s arrogant sneer shattered. He stared at the small slip of paper in the waiter's hand as if it were a venomous snake. They had all expected Jason to humiliate himself, to beg

Everyone turned to Jason, their faces plastered with mocking grins, fully expecting him to make a fool of himself by asking for the cheapest house blend.Instead, Jason didn't even look at the menu. He simply met the sommelier’s eyes and calmly said, "A bottle of Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1992 vintage, if you have it."The sommelier’s polite, practiced smile broke for a fraction of a second, his eyes widening in genuine surprise. He immediately bowed with deep, deferential respect. "An exquisite choice, sir. I will retrieve it from the cellar immediately."Sitting across the table, Matthew frowned. He actually knew very little about fine wine. He only knew that Jason had just confidently ordered a bottle with a name he had never even heard of.Before Matthew could say anything, Charlotte leaned forward, looking directly at him with an innocent expression."Matthew, do you mind if I order something else?" she asked softly. "I'm not quite used to the taste of the wine Jas

Jason leaned over to Colman. "I need to use the restroom," he whispered, stepping away from the group and slipped out of the private room He headed towards the corridor near the lobby. However, as he turned to a secluded corner, he heard a deep and aggressive voice that made him stop. Charlotte was pinned against the wall by a burly middle-aged man with a thick, scruffy beard. Relying on his heavy build and Gangstar vibes, he had her trapped against the wall and spoke to her in a threatening tone. “You think you can just walk away from us?” the man snarled, as he slammed his hand heavily against the wall, causing it to vibrate in response. “I don't care who you think you are. You have to follow me, or I drag you along… Either way, you're coming with me.” he declared. Jason's eyes narrowed. He instantly recognized the man. He's one of John's bodyguards, the same thugs who had surrounded him in the alley the night Rose broke up with him. Without a second thought, Jason walked c

The economics class was teeming with students, some of whom Jason didn't recognize. The 800 seater lecture hall was filled with students patiently waiting for the economics professor. It was the final class of lectures for this semester, and the lecturer had threatened not to grade anybody who didn't come to class. And it was well known that Mrs Chen always kept her words, regardless of your status or upbringing. Suddenly, everyone began to check their phones, as there was a new mail sent to every student attending that class. It was an apology from Mrs Chen. She was taking an impromptu leave due to unforeseen circumstances. Matthew Bening didn't waste a single second. Stepping to the front of the room, he clapped his hands loudly to draw the class's attention. "Since we've got the afternoon off, why wait for the weekend?" Matthew announced, flashing a highly rehearsed, arrogant smile. "Let's hold the graduation dinner today. My treat." A chorus of excited murmurs rippled through

Pendleton University, with its sprawling ivy-covered brick walls and manicured lawns, was a battlefield disguised as an institution of higher learning. For the elites of Silver Bridge City, it was a high-end networking hub where deals were made between frat houses. For the few working-class students, it was a four-year endurance test. With graduation just weeks away, the campus was buzzing with one primary obsession: the annual senior graduation dinner. It was the ultimate stage for the wealthy to flex their family's status one last time before stepping into the real world. Jason pushed open the heavy wooden door to his dorm room, stepping into the cramped, familiar space. "Jason!" Colman Domingo practically jumped off his bed the moment the door clicked open. The burly, athletic young man let out a massive sigh of relief, dropping his gaming controller. "Damn it, man, you had me worried sick," Colman said, walking over and gripping Jason’s shoulder. He looked Jason up and down,
