But it was dark, and all she could see was the outline of Lut's face and body. However, at that moment, the police megaphone sounded, announcing their presence. It all happened so fast and within a matter of minutes. The door opened, revealing Lut's men, from the color of their camouflage to the white and black colour of the popular consortium security uniform. The lights came on, and at that moment, Aurora had a full glimpse of Lutenant for the first time. Lutenant, however, had other plans. As soon as the lights came on, he fired his gun, bringing the man whose hand was holding her neck firmly to his knees, the gun flying out of his hand in seconds.Where had he learnt how to shoot so well? The man fell to the floor with a groan, clutching his hand.Everything happened so fast, in a matter of seconds. The legacy of the supreme ruler A father’s gratitude
When Lutenant James woke up the next morning, his head was pounding, his throat felt dry, and his arms felt as though he had been lifting weights the previous night. He rolled out of bed, ignoring the pain that shot up his hands temporarily. He glanced at the alarm clock perched on top of his bedside table, acknowledging that he had to be at work in a few minutes, and also go down to the police station to give a statement after shooting the two men who had come to kill Aurora. He could barely believe it.How stupid were the Rick brothers? Deciding to attack Aurora and destroy evidence?Their plan, unfortunately, had backfired. And at the moment, if Dylan had previously had a chance to walk free, it was literally impossible at the moment. He was going to go to jail because Lut was certain that those men were going to speak. They had been caught with unlicensed weapons and had almost destroyed evidence and killed two women. If they were going to jail, they were going to be away for a ve

“You are really going all in for this woman, Lutenant. I hope you know that you can fool others but not me.”Lut chuckled. To him, he wasn't even doing it to impress Aurora. She was in danger, and because he had the power to help, he did so.“Come on, dad. The company agreed to support them financially. I'm part of the company, and I did the same thing you would've done.”He watched his father smile.“Yes. But not in the manner you're doing it. You're letting her know that you're always going to be there for her no matter what. God knows if I would've let a call wake me up in the middle of the night. I'm a pretty busy man.”As he got ready to enter his Porsche, his father stretched his hand to shake him.“I'll be in the consortium as soon as I can. While you're there, remember to use the help of our legal team. They'll know what to do, how to handle this, okay?”“Yes dad. I know the Rick brothers did this, but it's going to shock me if the older brother decided to get his hands dirty

The station was buzzing with officers and different individuals who had various problems to settle. Entering the station, Aurora felt the strong urge to go back to her house, and also continue her life the way she had always loved it, without drama and a lot of fussing. But before she did that, she knew she had a bridge to cross. And that bridge was the men in front of her. Having to identify them. Not to add the case of the Rick brothers and going to court to make sure that justice was properly served.Lutenant was beside her in an instant, looking over her in a manner that suggested that he wasn't completely convinced that she was okay.“Are you okay? You know, if you're not comfortable, you can go back to the hotel and I'll have them send the pictures of the men to you. You don't have to do this if you don't want to.”Aurora shook her head. She wanted to do it. She wanted to cross this bridge, go back to her quiet and peaceful life, and leave all the chaos behind. She wished he cou

“That's too much, Lut. They're already paying for my stay in the hotel. They don't need to do this either.”He smiled at her.“You are the consortium’s responsibility now, aurora. Allow them to do whatever they want. All they want is to support you and see you win this case.”.Aurora nodded tiredly.“Okay, I'll stay in the hotel till the construction company is done. I can't wait to move in, Lutenant. I miss my old life back…”Just when she was about to speak again, the door opened, revealing Mr James, the CEO. At once, Aurora felt conscious of herself and everything around her.“Lut, I've had a private investigator following the elder Rick brother since Dylan's arrest. The private investigator just called me.”“What did he want?” Lut asked in return, but his father was already opening the door and gesturing for both of them to go to the garage, where his car was parked. “I think he's the one who sent the hired killers to attack you, Aurora. In fact I don't think so, I am sure of i

“Hello?”The phone was pressed to Lut’s ear, and he had his other hand against the car for support. Aurora was beside him, and his father, who was ready to leave for his Wisconsin meeting, was already in the back seat of his car.“Lut. Thank goodness you replied. Can you come and pick me up? Network reception here is terrible, and I can't call an Uber.”He rolled his eyes. It was Mia.At that moment, he remembered that she had gone for a party at her friend's place, and he wondered which part of the country didn't have network reception. “Mia? Where are you?”“More or less near the Bears bar.”Lutenant's eyes widened in shock. The Bears bar was a few miles away from the city, almost on the outskirts. What was she doing there?“I thought you said you were at a friend's place? A friend's place is now Bears bar? You've got to be kidding me, Mia.”Before she replied, there was a pause that said she was probably thinking of the perfect reply for his accusatory tone.“Oh, you know how the
The legacy of the supreme ruler A master at work
By weekend, Richard had finally managed to get himself ready to act as a salesman and personal assistant to his girlfriend's father.Dressed in a tuxedo and black, leather shoes, he looked like a different man, but that didn't hide who he actually was. Douglas, who had visited him the previous night before the weekend, smiled as soon as he put the finishing touch to his dressing.“I don't know what this man sees in you, to be honest. You don't love his daughter, you're out to get his company, and the worst part is that he doesn't even know it. I've never seen someone so clueless in my life.”Richard bent to put a shoelace in place, and by the time he stood up, there was a big grin on his face.“You can't do it. And that's what separates me from other men out there. I can be whatever he wants me to be as long as I please him. As long as I make him happy. You don't know that, do you?”Douglas laughed.“You better get some money today, we've not had a customer in weeks.”Richard nodded,

Fractured bliss
“Well, Darren usually handles all this kind of stuff, you know. But come with me, if he sent you my way, then it's for a reason.”“Oh, I'd surely love to work with you, miss Aurora. I need your guidance and that helping hand.”Despite the fact that she was pleased to hear herself being described in that manner, she decided not to show it. She smiled shyly, and at that moment, the elevator stopped.“Here we are. I'm sure you know that I am Mr Lutenant's personal assistant, and that I handle most of his work for him, especially when he's busy. So for the moment, you're going to just watch me, and take notes.”She opened the door to the first office before Lutenant's own, which served as her office. It actually looked like a hallway or a passage before Lutenant's office, but she didn't mind. To Aurora, the size of an office or the extra space would never determine her output. She loved her job, and wanted nothing more than to prove that she could always be counted upon when needed.“Well,

“Oh, it's fine. I wouldn't have done most of it without Aurora, by the way. You're her boss, right? I saw you guys dancing earlier on. She's a keeper, you know? Quite harsh and strict, but she knows what she wants. Ain't that right, boys?”Lut smiled, even though he was slightly tirritated. He knew it was a men's thing to talk about women, but wasn't he about to get married? Some things were best left unsaid. The two men, who were taller versions of Carl to him, grinned, and shook his hand.Just then, Natalie and Aurora approached the circle, smiling.“Our best guests are about to leave, babe.”“Oh, yes,” Carl said with a huge smile. “Lutenant here was just telling me.”“I owe you a gift, Natalie.” Lut said as the group made their way to the door to see him and Aurora off.“Oh, thank you. I'll be expecting it. Don't miss too much, Rora. I know you won't see food like mine in a long while, which means you can start coming down here to eat if you miss my cooking so much.”The group bur

“Thank you everyone for coming once again. You've made something as common as a housewarming party a memorable one for me. I won't forget this, ever.”Aurora watched the entire mini speech with a special kind of warmth in her heart. She had never seen Natalie so happy.“One, two, three!”The crowd counted with the couple as the knife came down. There was scattered clapping, and then it was then readjusted into a beautiful round of applause.Grabbing a flute from an attendant who was walking by, Carl raised the flute.“Everyone, grab a glass please.”“Aurora? Can you help us make a toast?”Aurora had not seen that coming. Naturally shy, she raised an eyebrow and felt her skin burn under the gaze of the entirety of everyone who was in the room. However, she made her way to the front of the crowd, then raised her flute.“To a life of happiness, endless celebrations and every good thing in the world. To Natalie and Carl!”“To Natalie and Carl!”There were clinks as flute brushed flute. Sh

The roar was deafening. Two pops followed, and in a minute, she was drenched with alcohol. Aurora smiled in satisfaction, enjoying the shock and surprise on her best friend's face.Carl slipped out of the crowd in a moment, holding a card that said boldly, “Welcome to our home, Natalie. I will always love you.”Natalie burst into tears on seeing the card, and immediately fell into his arms. The crowd burst into a series of cooing, and Aurora stole a flute of champagne from an attendant’s tray, chugging it down and satisfying her thirst.“When…when did you do all of this, Carl? How did you plan this?” She looked at the crowd and the decorations, her hand scratching the back of her neck in confusion.“I wouldn't have done it without the help of your best friend here, Aurora. She helped me. We did it together. You have a wonderful friend, babe. She's a keeper.”“You knew?” Natalie asked her, as she struggled to wipe the tears from her eyes.“Of course I did. Can you imagine Carl doing al
The ultimate welcome
“Whatever. I'm dirty and sweaty already. How about I just sit in the dining room and you serve me, alright? I'll take my bath later.” Natalie grinned, leaving her in the sitting room. “You know, sometimes I wonder what you would've done without me. Just look at you, tired as hell, coming home to a beautiful meal you would've paid for at a restaurant. You owe me big time.” Aurora groaned audibly. “Can you just cut the boasting part and forward to the part where I eat and say thanks? You can boast after that, okay?” Natalie's laughter was loud. Aurora dropped her hand bag in the sitting room, snatching her phone. In the dining room, she texted Carl immediately, urging him to call Natalie in a few minutes. She nearly let the phone fall from her hands when she saw her best friend enter with a tray of the food. It was one of her favourites. Lamb chops, biscuits and an apple pie next to it. There was a salad w
The squad
Boss and personal assistant left the office building, walking stride by stride. Aurora, her phone in her hand, was trying to reach Carl. He was the one who had done the arrangements, and she would've helped out if she didn't have to go down to the Fredrickson's company and help Lutenant get the contract he was gushing over so much. She waited next to her old model Benz, waiting for Carl to pick up. When he didn't answer after the first ring, she turned to Lut, who was waiting for her and shrugged. “He hasn't picked?” “Yes. Makes me wonder what is wrong with him. Who makes plans and doesn't keep to his own part of the deal? If he knows how tired I am, he'll pick up.” Lut smiled. “Call him again.” His voice was calm, the exact opposite of what hers was. Nodding, she did just as he had requested. And to her shock, Carl picked up on the first ring. “Aurora!” He called her name as if he was out of breath.
Sealing the deal
The executive meeting hadn't gone well, or maybe someone had brought an offer larger than the amount he had proposed. He didn't know which one it was yet. “The executive meeting didn't end too well. The highest bidder plays a huge role, Lut. I'm afraid we chose someone else.” Lutenant smiled. He looked out of the window, forgetting what he had planned to say for an instant if things didn't go his way. “Lut? Are you still there?” “Yes sir. It's alright, Mr Fredrickson. I understand you perfectly. There are other companies in the industry. We'll have to look into it.” He glanced at his father, who raised an eyebrow, still smiling despite the fact that he had heard his son's answer and knew that the deal was lost. “Come on, Lut, I'm kidding! Did you even believe that I'll sell to someone else? You've been the highest bidder so far. The rest have all come in under hundred. And even if you weren't, I would've still sold to you.
Family friction
When Richard ended the call, his hands were trembling slightly and he felt lightheaded. When had Mr Johnson entered the room? Had he been listening to the entirety of his conversation with Hal? He wanted the earth to open up and swallow him. “Having problems at work?” He nodded, not knowing what else to say. “Yes, something like that.” Mr Johnson stood up, going to the window. He looked out of it, smiling at nothing in particular. When he turned to look at Richard, Richard noticed how furrowed his eyebrows were, and how he didn't even smile one bit, even though he had been smiling earlier. The smile had seemed to disappear into thin air. Something was wrong. “What kind of problems are you having at work, son? Are you aware that you're marrying my daughter, the only child I've ever had? Do you know that, Richard?” Richard swallowed hard. He wasn't scared of Mr Johnson, no, that was far from it.
Guilt by association
“Hundred million, Mr Fredrickson. I can't go higher.” Mr Fredrickson looked at members of his executive team. They all exchanged knowing glances which Lut knew he didn't understand. But he kept calm, watching the entire proceedings with his hand holding his flute. “Why don't we both sleep over it, Lut? My team and I will take your offer into consideration. Before anything, I want you to know that I've thought about leaving this company in good hands. And there are no other guaranteed good hands in this city apart from yours.” Lutenant nodded with a smile. “I understand you perfectly, Mr Fredrickson. I do.” “Now, there are still offers coming in, and we want to sell to the highest bidder, I'm afraid. At the same time, I want my legacy to live on even if this place doesn't belong to me anymore. You're the only one who can assure that.” “Oh come on, Mr Fredrickson, you flatter us way too much.” Mr Frederickson raised
